BOINC 4.19 resolved the problems I had with 4.25
(Message 90382)
Posted 24 Mar 2005 by Michael Post: I posted a BOINC 4.25 horror story where almost my whole XP computer slowed to a crawl even though the CPU was idle 99% of the time and I had overheating problems that essentially crashed my home network. I just wanted to report that I ‘tried one more time' with build 4.19 and except for the recent SETI network down time, all is well. I’ve had no overheating. My computer is happy and finally so am I. |

BOINC really screw up my XP machine - Horror story!
(Message 88013)
Posted 19 Mar 2005 by Michael Post: I’ve run over 3500 classic work units and strongly support the project. I switched to BOINC 4.25 from SETI classic. Had some problems. BOINC hogged the resources and made everything else crawl. Eventually I uninstalled it and did a system restore to get things back to normal, but being a faithful SETI believer tried again. Then I downloaded it a second or maybe a third time and either BOINC or whatever came down the pipe with it really screwed my winXP machine up. It would lock up my machine and at first contrl-alt-del would get me out of it so I tried to adjust the preferences to make it play nice. The lock up kept happening until eventually my machine just blipped off. I mean I had to switch the power off and back on to reboot the machine. Then it happened again and again. Then it got worse. The power went off by itself. I got total lock up and hardware shutdown. It happened in the GUI. It happened in safe mode. To be honest I didn’t even know XP had a safe mode because my machine has been almost completely stable for 3 years. It happened when I tried to do a system restore and it even happened when I entered the BIOS prior to booting the operating system. That really blew me away. I didn’t even know that was possible. It gets even better because my XP machine is a server for another networked computer. For 10 hours neither computer had email or internet access while I tore down the network and tried every diagnostic, deleted every file, registry key and reference to Seti or BOINC. Finally I got my XP machine stable enough to restore to several days before I originally installed BOINC. Late last night I got my network set up again and everything is back to normal. I know others have had problems too. The only possible interaction I can think of is I use 2 different Ad-ware and spy-ware programs to keep junk off my computers. One is Ad Aware SE the other is called Spy Bot S&D. I am finished with BOINC and since I am not sure what happened I am not going to even try SETI Classic again unless someone comes up with a definitive explanation. |

BOINC using 99% of cpu Internet Explorer crawls
(Message 87056)
Posted 17 Mar 2005 by Michael Post: > After modifying the preferences, did you used the "Update project" in the tab > "Projects" of Boinc. > > If a change in the preferences is made on the website these changes has to be > transfered to Boinc by using the "Update" function. > > No. I had not 'Updated'. I updated the project but that has not helped. I now find that other operating system functions like the recycle bin, the My Computer folders, My Documents etc., along with IE take forever to open even though Task Manager now shows system idle at near 99%. Any additional thoughts? Thanks |

BOINC using 99% of cpu Internet Explorer crawls
(Message 87049)
Posted 17 Mar 2005 by Michael Post: I just switched to BOINC. I have set preferences to wait 3 idle min before beginning to use the CPU but Task Manager show BOINC runs constantly. I don't want the app to run when I'm using the computer for something else. Internet Explorer 6 takes forever to open, Task Manager shows IE occasionally gets 1% of the CPU time until it actually opens. Once IE starts things get better. So far nothing else seems to have slowed down. What is the deal??? Below are my settings. Is something set incorrectly? Processor usage Do work while computer is running on batteries?
