4th April in the 57th year of her Majesties reign

My dear friends,

After a rather long trip to the Doldrums via the Panama Canal, I am delighted to be able to inform you, that I have recently disembarked from a Royal Mail Steamer at Harwich, and repaired here with good haste. And it appears not a moment to soon. A good acquaintance of mine has just made me aware that my beloved, Muriel Miggins, has made an all too brief appearance, and has been observed making her way, albeit a trifle unsteadily, towards the Olde Pie Shoppe.

I shall take this opportunity to investigate further, and to that end, I have called the hall porter to summon a Hansom cab. I will keep you good people appraised of forthcoming events.

Yours in Anticipation,

Sidney J. Snodgrass

RE yours of the 29th inst.

My Dear Mrs K,

Yes, sadly Uncle Oswald is no longer with us, but his many aspirations live on in the hearts of true men. And yes, Mrs M. was tickled pink to know him as well, in fact on many occasions I am led to believe.

Truly yours,

SJM

Good Morrow,

May I present Fraternal greetings to the assembled throng hereabouts on this warm summers day. I would make so bold as to agree with my esteemed Mrs. Miggins, that dipping an appendage into the briny is indeed an invigorating pasttime. In fact here is my good self and my My Uncle Oswald last year at Bognor Regis.

My Dearest Mrs. K,

I send this dispatch to you via courier from my Gentlemans Club, where at present I am engaged in a spot of Bridge with the Major, don't ya know. I am greatly pleased that you should take such a kind interest in Mrs. M's latest endeavour. I have it on good authority that the local Health Inspector will make a full recovery, and is expected to resume his duties in about 3 months.

Sincerely,

Sidney J. Snodgrass

Ah I am pleased to see that good fortune prevailed, and that your fiduciary arrangements have at last borne fruit. As I was saying to the Vicar only the other day, there has been a distinct lack of establisments where local gentlefolk might pop in for a quick one on the way home. I shall repair with good speed to the Vicarage to inform him of this good news.

My Dearest Lady,

Please allow me the privilege of sending you my sincerest felicitations upon the commencement of your new venture. It is indeed heartwarming to see one so young and charming, undertaking these onerous duties with such fortitude.

Your Faithful Admirer,

It's where I first made the acquaintance of Sydney J. Snodgrass.

As I live and breathe, Mrs Miggins! How the devil are you Madam? Yes I too also remember that first meeting. It was behind the Village Temperance Hall, if my memory serves corectly. Yes indeed, we have a lot to thank this place for, how else would I have been able to get my hands on your dumplings?

Dear Comrades,

As I was partaking of a pre-lunch G&T at the Rangoon Lancers Gentlemans Club, I was informed by the barman that my good name was being mentioned. I have therefore hastened here with all dispatch, and would proffer my earnest felicitations to your goodselves.

I am indeed sadly at a loss to explain the prolonged absence of the dear Lady in question. But the last I heard, she was busily engaged in the annual spring cleaning of her esteemed establishment, and renovating her drawers.

I beg to remain Sirs,

Your Most Obedient Servant,

I say, can't a chap have a post prandial snooze without being rudely awakened? Now whats all this chatter outside my window.

Ah, I see, my good friend Percival P. Man has returned from his latest escapade in the darkest nether regions. More tales of derring do will no doubt surface in the Calcutta Horse Social Club.

In the meantime, has any good soul had word from, ahem, a good friend of mine Mrs. Miggins? The last dispatch received intimated that she was travelling down south, but that her clothes were unfortunately headed north.

My dear Mrs Miggins,

After the events of today, I am sorely in need of a cup of your famous tea, and a friendly bosom.

I say sir, have a care, Mrs Miggins and I have an understanding, if you get my drift.

Are you saying that you and she who must be obeyed are having a secret assignation?

You're a brave man indeed.

Mr dear Madam,

You cut me to the quick. I would not presume to suggest such an ungentlemanly thing. However, I was rather of the persuasion that we were, how shall I delicately put it, in a similar situation to Mr Arkwright and Nurse Emanuel, at the other emporium on the corner.

I just happened to be passing, and gadzooks, not a moment too soon.

Gentelemen, gentlemen, there are certain subjects and matters, that those of good breeding, do not mention or discuss in the presence of Ladies. In the case of bodily functions, a typical reference would be as follows.

Men sweat
Women perspire
Ladies glow.

Some decorum in the forum if you please!

My Dear Mrs Miggins, I am indeed most pleased and gratified to learn of your recent addition to our towns retail establishments. Since the demise of the Pie Shoppe, there has been a sad lack of such facilities for those of a discerning nature, such as myself, to avail themselves of.

At present I am returning from the port of Southampton, where the message reached me by the semaphore telegraph service. Upon my return I shall immediately repair to your premises to renew our acquaintance.

Yours Ever

Sydney

Madam,

I can assure you that I was in no way disrepectful of your demeanour.

As per your revelations apertaining to your previous emporium, I have to say that I think it is absolutely outrageous. Good god woman, this is the 20th Century, this small minded thinking was eradicated many years ago (God save the King).

I, and indeed many others, of your faithfull clientele, will continue to frequent wheresoever you are able to purvey your exquisite wares and delicasies.

I think however that we should, upon studied reflection, bar certain people from access.

We all look forward in eager anticipation to your latest culinary adventures.

I beg to remain, Madam,

Your most loyal,

and Humble Servant,

Sidney J. Snodgrass

I say, has anyone seen Mrs. Miggins recently? I thought I perceived a brief swirl of petticoats a short while back, but perchance I was mistaken.

Oh dear me Mrs Miggins, I see that we will have our work cut out here. Nevertheless, onwards and upwards as you so often say.

MEN. Both the host and men wear the regulation
afternoon dress, consisting of the long
frock coat with single or double-breasted
waistcoat to match, or of some fancy cloth,
and gray trousers. White linen, a light tie,
a silk hat, gray gloves, and patent leather
shoes complete the costume.

The overcoat, hat, and cane are left in
the dressing-room, and the guest removes one
or both gloves as he pleases--remembering
that he must offer his ungloved right hand
to the hostess.

SHAKING HANDS. Guests on being presented to
the hostess should shake hands. If guest
takes leave of hostess, they should shake
hands. If the hostess is surrounded by
guests, a pleasant nod of farewell is admissible.

Gentlemen,

INTRODUCTIONS. A man should never be introduced
direct by card or letter to a young
unmarried woman. If he desires to be
introduced, the letter or card of introduction
should be addressed to her chaperone or
mother, who may then introduce him to the
young woman if she deems it advisable.

At an entertainment a chaperone may ask
a young man if he wishes to be introduced
to the one under her care.

Please forgive my recent absence, but I have been in erstwhile conversation with Mrs. Miggins, an upstanding Member of our community, who feels, like my goodself, that certain standards of decorum have been sadly lacking in recent times.

To redress that situation, we propose to offer advice and general suggestions as to acceptable behaviour and demeanour.

ADDRESSING PERSONS. Young girls should be spoken
of as Minnie Wilson, and not as Miss Minnie,
but are personally addressed as Miss Minnie.
Only the greatest intimacy warrants a man
in addressing a young girl as Minnie.

Parents should introduce their daughter
as My daughter Minnie, but should speak
of them before servants as Miss Minnie.

A married woman should be spoken of as
Mrs. Agnes Wilson, and personally addressed
as Mrs. Wilson.

AFTERNOON CALLS. These should be made between
three and half-past five, and if possible on
regular at home days.

In making an afternoon call a man should
wear the regulation afternoon dress.
