21) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : Why does a GPU uses more FLOPS then a CPU, for the same job? (Message 984636)
Posted 28 Mar 2010 by Profile popandbob
Post:
I believe the reason behind it is the CPU can do some calculations in a single calculation which the GPU has to do in a couple.

It would be like asking the CPU to do 2x2 it would figure it out with one calculation of 2x2=4 where as the GPU would have to 2x2= 2 groups of 2 means 2+2=4 (2 calculations)
That's obviously not a true case but I'm sure you get the idea.

Eric,
You've probably forgotten about this since its been over a year but you were going to do some sort of official announcement about the Good Search account you set up. Do you think you could get around to it sometime?
Cheers,

It would also help other projects because you could tell boinc to not try and get GPU work from a project which doesn't have a GPU app.

The only emails that may be received are either those which you opted in for or they are related to the petition. You only receive other emails if you become a member.
If they do start to send other emails most email accounts have a method of blocking senders.

I would sign a petition, but I don't want to sign up for the service included with the signature, and according to the terms of service, there is no way to opt out.

What service is that? I don't think you have to sign up for anything if you sign.

For those who think its tough or they cant donate to Seti directly...

http://www.goodsearch.com/

Select the University of California - Seti@home under charity

$0.01 per search is donated directly to Seti@home.

Eric was going to do an official post about this but never got around to doing it.

The latest version of MS FSX doesn't work virtualized, but I wonder if an older version would work?

X-plane has a linux and mac version... I dont think its as good as FSX but its better than older MSFS versions.

7/31/2009 11:43:07 PM SETI@home [error] File cudart.dll has wrong size: expected 192512, got 285696

i replaced the old files with the ones from luna, nd it gives me this..

boinc 6.6.38 and vista 32 bit.

That would mean your not using an app_info
Using an app_info.xml is required for these dll's

Lets look at defense spending, for this year it was 651.2 Billion dollars. I went to a large airshow last week-end and saw the new F-22 Raptor in action. It is quite the awesome machine (bring ear-plugs) To bad Canada does'nt have any, but then, you will not need any, because Canadians know that if anything really bad happens, we will protect you, we always have. Lets not forget Europe, people from Europe fall into 2 catagories, those whose ass we saved and those whose ass we kicked. Except Great Britain of course (they can take care of themselves.

There has been no war that the Americans have protected the Canadians.
You have a very sad knowledge of Europe. There are hundreds of countries in europe... How many were defeated with the help of the USA? Three. Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. The US has NEVER defeated anyone without help.

Its funny you should mention defence spending... The USA spends lots more on its Military but how much of a deficit do they have? How much is that deficit growing each year thanks to the huge military spending?

The GTX 260 is now capable with CUDA 2.3 dll's + drivers to get over 10000 RAC
Huge speedup with 2.3 (I'd estimate 12k-14k RAC if left on 24/7 and with minimal problems and slowdowns)

Your overclock is too high and they are having errors.

Expect 11-16 min with a high OC.

Also Memory overclock doesn't help reduce times.

39) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : How to install CUDA 2.3? (Message 920885)
Posted 24 Jul 2009 by Profile popandbob
Post:
You need the Drivers (190.38+) from nVidia and the DLL's from lunatics to use Cuda 2.3.
The drivers will tell the hardware what it can do and how to do it, the DLL's tell the app this is what to tell the GPU. (or at least that's the analogy I'm using)
