The fundraiser was a great idea, I donated for the first time since I joined in 1999. I will do so yearly.
I would like to know how the response has been , how much was raised ?

I have not been able to upload completed work units in over 24 hours
and they are stacking up on my computer waiting. Anyone know what's going on ? It would be nice to have a permanent " Server Status " indicator on the site so one does not have to ask or wonder. . .

Keep up the good work, we can debate this forever, Lets just hope we find something soon ( ET ), that would be fantastic !

Cheers to SETI staff and all those crunching numbers.

? And since SETI Classic had even less descriptive error messages, how was it better than BOINC?
No, I am not comparing running SETI like myspace. BUT putting up a line of text PER day IS AS EASY AS A 10 YEAR OLD UPDATING HIS MYSPACE PAGE ! IT TAKES 5 MIN. Why cant we be kept updated on server status so we don't spend hours trouble shooting our computers when thats not the problem ?

BTW: Screen savers are totally obsolete in the first place when talking about screen burn, that has not been an issue in 10 years. The old graphics WERE cool to look at for no other reason. It was FUN to watch, now I want to throw up at the swinging graphic. Why not an option to keep it steady for those like me who don't want to get sea sick ?

Also, sometimes the error message is NOT servers may be temporarily down. Sometimes it says Cannot connect to server.

OK. What is "garbage" about it? Please provide detail about specific bugs and I'll report them to ROM Walton to fix.

Okay. I have used BOINC successfully ( and hated it ) since its introduction. Another poster hit the nail on the head with one big problem. WE FREQUENTLY are unable to get or report work and looking in messages it will say something generic like " unable to connect to server ". Great. . . big help. Then I go to SETI's webpage and thats a waste of time because there are NO CURRENT UPDATES only a line or two from a problem LAST week. SOOOOO now I have to ask my self where the problem is, it is my router causing the problem ? My computer ? WHERE is the problem ?!?!?

None of that has anything to do with BOINC itself.

The SETI@Home servers were down and your BOINC Client was telling you that it couldn't connect. I've seen the messages myself, and they read:

8/12/2008 1:49:46 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site

and then:

8/12/2008 1:49:47 PM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

That tells you that it isn't your client. You then have the option of coming to the message boards and seeing that everyone else is posting messages stating that they can't connect. Through deduction, you can see that it isn't your system.

But, lets say for the sake of argument that SETI got rid of BOINC. You run a stand alone SETI client and that client tries to connect to the SETI servers, but the servers are down, so the client tells you those same messages quoted above. The end result is the same. When the old SETI Client couldn't connect to the server, it gave an error like "System connect error". And that was somehow more helpful than BOINC? People seem to have short memories as to how poorly designed SETI Classic actually was. Can you determine if "System connect error" is your router, your PC or the SETI servers? I can't. At least BOINC tells you "Project servers may be temporarily down", so why would you start checking your router or PC? It has already told you what the problem is.

The point I'm making is that you "hate" BOINC because of something that is not BOINC's fault, and wouldn't be different without BOINC. SETI@Home Classic had literally weeks of downtime without much communication on the website. So, how was that better than what we have now?

At least with BOINC, if you actually choose to join another project who's server isn't down will actually fill your computer time with other work to do until SETI's servers come back up. There's a sort of fault-tolerance there to help keep your systems busy. But if you don't want to join another project, then you need to accept that SETI's servers will have problems and you'll be unable to connect - and all this has nothing to do with BOINC itself.

A 10 year old is able to update their myspace page a dozen times a day but SETI cannot find the 5 minutes to UPDATE the webpage DAILY ?
I am very familiar with writing and running a webpage ( I have a few). It only takes a few minutes. You guys just leave everyone hanging.

So you're comparing running SETI with 3 people to a 10 year old on MySpace?

Do you have any idea how busy Eric, Matt and Jeff are in the lab?

But even so. Again, for the sake of argument, let's say I agree with you and that more communication should be put on the front page (and I actually do agree with you), I've seen them do it before and no one reads the front page. We still have dozens of people come in and complain on the boards about not being able to connect. At least some 10 year olds on MySpace can read.

But even if they did update the front page more often, what does that have to do with BOINC? BOINC is nothing more than a framework. Its a middleman. So I'm afraid that you still haven't given me anything to report to David to fix in BOINC.

NEXT That SWINGING SETI graphic screen saver NEEDS TO STOP MOVING ! If you can just jazz up the screen saver into the year 2000 era it would make many people happy.

Some people don't want it to stop moving, because a static image causes screen burn. Personally, I love the SETI screen saver and I think it looks nice. It could use a little less wobble, but as has been stated, that can be adjusted via your preferences.
No more funding for seti ? I just saw a piece on TV about a VERY LARGE donation to SETI by one of the Microsoft guys whatshisname: Allen. They even built this huge new array which is supposed to dramatically increase the data to analyze. HUMMM $$$$ Plus the NSA won't let you guys tell us what your finding in the first place. . . yes I hear you have NSA is present 24/7. But thats a topic for another thread.

If Vista is so great why are people dumping PC's and switching to MAC in droves ? I have yet to meet anyone who likes Vista, with the exception of you. . .

BOINC . . . maybe people ONLY want to run SETI ? BTW that SETI screen saver was cooler in the 90's when it didn't swing back and forth making people sea sick. I understand you cannot make people happy but people should be able to choose what they like. SETI needs to start appealing to the masses
insted they drop the ball.

I agree with everything you said, as a SETI user since 1999 I have been witness to its downward spiral since the introduction of BOINC. It is garbage. Reminds me of Microsoft and Windows VISTA. People hate it and complain they want XP back. Microsoft says: TOO BAD and stops production of XP. I buy a MAC after 15 years of owning a PC.

DUMP and RUN ? Why not ? SETI is UNRESPONSIVE to the complaints of its users ( like Microsoft ). We should have the option to run classic SETI. . . which WAS COOLER than this BOINC JUNK. I have not been able to get work for 3 days, think SETI updates their website ? NOOOOOO. I mean. . . how hard is that ? It a DAILY update too much to ask ?

If I owned a software company and my programmers produced an application like BOINC I would fire them on the spot.

My 2 cents.
