SSD or not??
(Message 1062828)
Posted 2 Jan 2011 by dcappello Post: I have 2 machines running with 64G SSDs - so far so good - both are win7 cruncher only boxes. They are fast - I can tell you that. One has and OCZ agility2 and the other has a Microcenter drive (based on the sandforce controller) Both drives were 100 usd. So far so good on my end - I just flashed the OCZ with new firmware - didn't notice a difference but I read that it helps. Lower power, low heat - every little bit helps. Will report back if I see any issues etc. After a typical install with BOINC etc. I have about 30G free - not really enough for a main machine with apps etc. but plenty for cruncher-only boxes. BTW running everything in in ACHI mode - YMMV. -David |

GTX 460
(Message 1061711)
Posted 31 Dec 2010 by dcappello Post: I just installed my first GTX 460 - so far happy with it, shorter than the 470s and 480s more than double speed of a 9800 and for the price (on sale) of around 129.00 hard to beat. I'll replace older 9800s and 8800s with this - unless deals are to be had on 470s/480s. What is the veridic on SLI - better to SLI or not? -David |

Posted 28 Dec 2010 by dcappello Post: Phud, I have box running 2 GTX260s with an air-cooled 920 - I have a modular corsair HX620 in there and the killAwatt reads 460-511, So I think you should at least spring for a 1000W unit like the Corsair HX1000 and give yourself some room - sounds like a nice cruncher! |

Odd things after the big outage
(Message 1054462)
Posted 10 Dec 2010 by dcappello Post: Just looking over things after the long outage and I notice a few things - some of my rigs seem to be pulling a lot of compute errors on CUDA WUs - others seeing the same? Also I just noticed that looking over the stats I can't even find myself in the list - my RAC should be around 29K right now. |

(Message 1054453)
Posted 10 Dec 2010 by dcappello Post: My first rig with a 480 just came online. triggerfish I can say my 480 runs REAL hot. Under load with Lunatics latest - the GPUs are running about 88C (about 190F) underload. Room is 75F. I have 1 card running in a very well ventilated case and the rest of the rig is water cooled. Fan on card is at 65% 2730RPM this card gets so warm I can't touch the connector plate on the back of the rig. Wonder if others see the same that have 480s (I should have sprung for the waterblock version of the card). |
