Thanks for the all the info - I fired up Fedora 15 and Ubuntu - ended up on Ubuntu - most easy to setup and get running with BOINC host stats here:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6067896

(yes I didn't put it inside a url)

I think next I may try something with a GPU in it - that host only has 8 Cores.

thanks again for the guidance.

regards,

Hello all,

With so many choices for linux - what is the opinion of everybody for the "best" distro to use
to Crunch with? I am looking for easy, small, fast - be "nice" if I could use hardware if it was
available (ie graphic cards). I am moving off windows vista, server 2003 - so I'll be doing a few
machines.

regards,

Of course I have been reading up on the AMD vs NVIDIA wars - all my rigs are running NVIDIA - but perhaps I need to try something from AMD - are the optimized apps ready to go? What is everybody thinking along these lines?

I started to poke around some more on Power Supplies - Thinking I'll need a small sub-station
to power one of those 590s......

There is a very interesting article over on Tom's :

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/psu-manufacturer-oem,2729.html

Looks like Corsair and PC Power and cooling use some of the same OEMs, anyway I also
looked up the UL reference for Cosair:
http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/showpage.html?name=QQGQ2.E307858&ccnshorttitle=Power+Supplies,+Information+Technology+Equipment+Including+Electrical+Business+Equipment+-+Component&objid=1078378885&cfgid=1073741824&version=versionless&parent_id=1073787374&sequence=1

Bottom line is don't cheap out a power supply.

I am a big fan of Corsair supplies - I just ordered a new 750 (CMPSU-750HX) for my next build.
Don't worry to much about it - 7yr warranty and 80 PLUS SILVER Certified!
Newegg has it on sale for 129.00 with free shipping. Use this promo code: EMCKHJJ36 (expires in 2 days) and this turns into a great deal (steal) at $114.00 usd.
Here is the link to the supply I am talking about:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139010&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL021111&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL021111-_-EMC-021111-Index-_-PowerSupplies-_-17139010-L06C

I have never had a Corsair supply burn up yet.

I have a box that has two GTX 460s in it - thing is they are different builds and
also have different memory configs - what kind of issues will I have - if any
running with this configuration? (they will not be SLI'd)

here are the two cards:

Here is a crazy idea. Fresh out of school - consulting - who knows where they might
end up.

How about a high-end 15" MacBook Pro ? Hardware is top notch in quality and looks
great! The 15" with a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 and 4G of ram and 500G drive starts out
at 2400 bucks. (there are discounts ava if you look around).

You would then have the flexibility and choice of which OS you wanted to use. With
bootcamp you can boot native into win7 if you needed.

Applecare is top-notch, Apple stores are all over the place if service was ever needed.

Something to consider perhaps...

That card does have 1.5G onboard. We can keep on eye on it to see how it does.

discounts - http://www.microcenter.com/storefronts/powerspec/processors.html
Like 80 or 90 usd off!!! I have not built a system with one yet but am thinking about it. All this is
very interesting.

CPUs are at 48C with a tiny bit of OC. (this is a water cooled machine)
