Still Getting New Ghosts
(Message 1040909)
Posted 11 Oct 2010 by Questor Post: Apparently it doesnt work on XP. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262265 The work around is to change the IP address to a non working one for your router and then back to dhcp (or a working static address). Disable ======= netsh interface ip set address <interface name> static <ip address> <mask> <default gateway> <gateway interface metric> e.g. netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" static 1.1.1.1 255.0.0.0 1.0.0.1 1 Enable ====== netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" dhcp Tried on XP and works OK. BOINC not downloading GPU WUs
(Message 1033501)
Posted 17 Sep 2010 by Questor Post: There was a server side change made a while ago which means that VLAR tasks that dont run as well on a GPU are only allocated to CPU. You may be experiencing that. Otherwise the MB tasks run on CPU or GPU. Do your CPU tasks have a name something like xxxxxxxxxxx.vlar_y - those a VLARs which wont get assigned to your GPU. With a lot of users currently requesting new work you may just have been unlucky and got 0 allocated on that request. If you have surplus of CPU tasks you could look at Freds Reschedule app which allows you to move tasks from CPU<_> GPU. Note: The other scheduler app on Lunatics does not work well with Fermi cards. Posted 11 Sep 2010 by Questor Post: Hi all, one of my hosts seems to be getting a lot of errors in the last few hours since the servers came back online Host ID: 879910 I have another three WU's that are yet to report and I noticed the run time is identical when they exit at 01:51:44 I am running AK's optimised app and they are non Cuda WU's, anyone having similar problems? There are a few threads with explanations as to the cause of these errors but as a quick fix you can download the new Reschedule tool by Fred which has an option to fix the problem. (The -177 happens when a task exits because it has reached a maximum timeout value) New Reschedule tool John. |

Posted 10 Sep 2010 by Questor Post: Oops Getting it on all my machines as well. At first fails to upload because of space but then succeeds. It is hard to believe the SETI folks wouldnt have spotted the disks were full (unless nothing could be done about it) - I wonder if it is a deliberate mechanism to control the upload storm by limiting the amount of disk space available? However, I did wonder if the increasing pendings and ghosts were eventually going to cause a problem. John. |

Posted 7 Sep 2010 by Questor Post: I've had a few recurring random lock ups varying from a few mins to half a day over the last couple of weeks myself. I havent 100% tracked down the causes but these were the fixes. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5516356 Randomly freezing after months of working OK but with the screen still displaying. Tried various things, swapped GPUs and tried variouds combinations of the memory, upgraded video driver but still did it. Went in to BIOS and fixed the memory speed to match the RAMs spec and hasnt locked up since. I think the Auto overclock was pushing the memory too far. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=4841051 Randomly freezing after months of working OK but with the screen still displaying. Swapped GPUs (GTX470), upgrtaded video drivers and still the same. Checked and the fan speed on the GPUS had reverted to AUTO - I normally have it set to 100%. Set to 100% and hasnt locked up since. John. [Edit] Forgot a third one that happened yesterday. One machine repeatedly locked up (clock stopped) but then unfroze after a few minutes - keyboard and mouse not active so couldn't find out what was happening. Rebooted and been OK since. My Machine knida overheated..........

Posted 22 Aug 2010 by Questor Post: I have it set to shut down when the cpu fan speed drops to save the hardware, I had stupidly left some cables tied up with a rubber band which of course dried oit perished and snapped. Totally my fault whoops! I did exactly the same thing on an i7 ASRock MB. I couldn't work out why the RAC of the machine was low and tasks taking forever to complete. I installed the ASROCK monitoring utility which showed the CPU speed was cycling from 0 to 2.67GHz and keeping the CPU temperature at a constant 90C. Then I looked closely at the CPU fan and it had a power lead jammed in it. Removed the lead, CPU dropped to about 50C and the speed remained constant at 2.67GHz. It had probably been like it for a couple of weeks......... oops! |

modem question
(Message 1026761)
Posted 20 Aug 2010 by Questor Post: It is a Belkin G Router wireless one which I have had for a few years I can sympathise but not help much. I had a similar problem suddenly started with a Netgear DG834V2. Tried swapping with another borrowed Netgear DG834 and exactly the same. I have a work ADSL as well as home and now have a 3COM and a Zyxel installed and have not had the problem since. (The modem seemed to be working Ok - and could be pinged remotely but just periodically/randomly stopped sending data in and out) A restart made it work for a while. I assume some change was made at the exchange which the old modems couldnt cope with (and no newer firmware for this version) but the likelyhood of getting my ISP to admit/sort anything out was highly unlikely so I took the risk and tried new hardware. My ADSL is pretty poor - lucky to get 2Mb/s as we are a long way from the exchange. |

Just set no new tasks, run down what you have left and detach/attach and redo your app_info. By then most of my work was done and I don't lose too much. It also gives me plenty of time to refill. Sorry you are waiting on my ghosts. The recent DCF ups and downs have meant I've ended up with way to many WUs after initially having too few. I'm therefore stuck with either keeping the ghost users waiting or if I drop my OK WUs setting a lot of other users back to another long wait for a new wingman. No truncation of data on the page - just no data at all , only the page header. Been like this for over a week now and pending was around the 800K mark. I 'assumed' that the increase in pendings because of larger caches and ghost units was becoming too big a hit on the database so they put in some sort of restriction. Also had a quick check on a couple of machines last night for ghosts for the first time. 1. Reschedule showed 857 tasks in progress - web site 2020 2. Reschedule showed 882 tasks in progress - web site 2380 3. Reschedule showed 2800 tasks in progress - web site 4420 I'm going to have to do something soon to fix this but am loathe to disconect/connect because of losing what WUs I have. John. |
