It must be here. We are to wait by the tree, and I see no others around.

Ahoy, shipmates!

The free calendar I got from the local Chinese restaurant last year runs out on 31 December. THAT is when the world will really end.

I have our current Trade Union of Education calendar, which runs up to 5 January 2014. It will be a Sunday. So, after today and the date Bill has, the next Apocalypse again will be in a bit more than a year.

Personally, I am only scared to end up into the imaginary Heaven. All my mates would be in the other department anyway, enjoying a nice sauna temperature.

Ahoy, shipmates!

Maybe I also might just for once not post in this thread... hmm, not posting here for once means that at all other times... dang.

Anyways...

Cheers, Prost, Skol

... this brought in mind one memory from the past July. Photo actually taken in one churchyard:

No, I shall not explain a thing. ;-)

Ahoy, shipmates!

There is a saying, that in July, this country here is closed. Today saw a real classic proof of the fact, something indeed worth sharing: the present front page of Finland's largest newspaper Helsingin Sanomat international online edition: "Our next dailies update will not be until Wednesday August 1st at c.13:00 (GMT+3), as the International Edition will be in recess from Midsummer. A very pleasant summer to one and all!"

Wish you good summer - and good July down under, too. See you in August.

- - my randy raccoon - -

Incidentally, happened to come across with a randy fossil turtle affair, freshly reported: http://www.nature.com/news/sex-locked-in-stone-1.10850. But these particular offending deeds sure are statute-barred already.

And my dear rather bad tempered science teacher, I always thought raccoon dog, Nyctereutes procyonoides, is a species on its own right and not a hybrid. However, next time I see one I'll ask about his or her parents. ;-)

You may end up with a whole family of raccoons knocking on your back door!

Suppose need to prepare then. Let me see... coons like cat food, right?

Any particular preferences or will any cat do?

Ahoy, shipmates!

Seven raccoons have moved to Helsinki Zoo: http://www.korkeasaari.fi/zoomissa/pesukarhut.saapuivat.korkeasaareen - this is in Finnish, but there is an image as a proof, too.

Nothing too special there as such. After all, they have lions and camels in the same zoo as well. But these very specimens came from the Netherlands, from a sanctuary for exotic animals by the name AAP Foundation, http://www.aap.nl/english/. It seems to be the case, that people have taken young raccoons as pets and then later abandoned them.

Originally, there weren't raccoons in Europe, but those were imported, and the Helsinki Zoo news release says that in Germany and Poland, there already is a fairly robust population. I seem to recall Angela once said so to me, but I was unbelieving. Now I wonder, if might someday find a ringtail looking for a snack in my backyard, too... but perhaps the winters here continue too harsh.

Next time I visit Helsinki, must remember to go to the zoo, too.

Up here in the Great White North - -

I guess you know the feeling: Being fishing on some riverside, fish eating good. Concurrently, a black cloud of a zillion gnats whimpering around you. And you are well aware, that your mosquito repellent will withstand only so long...

Ahoy, shipmates!

I suppose insects are counted as critters, too. There seems to be a very promising gnat summer incoming hereabouts.

However, am not exactly sure how happy am about this.

Not personally, but I will take your word for it.

Very good, son. Someday I may tell you about those times I was young. ;-)

Those were the times indeed... like my old buddy Väinämöinen... we had some good times, although this sampo business backfired a bit...

But keeping strictly off topic, I might note that I only once met this fellow Khufu. It was a fishing trip together, but he was rather old already.

Help. I don't know what topic we have, that I could try to be offtopic of.

Remember when Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria all were separate kingdoms?

And now, proceeding off topic from the 9th century England, I believe the point isn't exactly the topic, but not. ;-)

Whilst cutting some wood I once - -

Zapped, should we form the Grand Masters' Hall of Excellence, or something as modest?

Some years ago:

Plan: With one group, to mow some hay with scythes.

Self: Said already in advance to the guys, that shall take first aid kit with me, cause somebody will be fumbling anyway.

Result: They did a good job in the provincial hospital operating room. I still have even my right thumb.

Lessons learnt: When sharpening your scythe, you will keep your eyes in the job. Also, may be a good idea sometime to practice binding also one's own wound single-handed. ;-)

But am not staying on no topic, no sir. Was about to say, that there may be pine martens in Wales, after all.

Ahoy, shipmate!

Edit, If I square root -1 in a calc, it comes up as "i". I still dunno what the heck that means, or why. :-D

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/i.html
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ImaginaryUnit.html
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ImaginaryNumber.html

You may appreciate, that any number squared yields a positive... well if you take 0 as positive, too. E.g.:
    2^2 = 4
    -2^2 = 4

Therefore: square root of -1? Imaginary unit, i for short.

Edit: Dang, I kept on topic for one reply? By way of correction, so as to wander off topic, I might also add that there are 18 species of penguins.

Ahoy, shipmates!

This discussion brought two things in mind. Firstly:

And as SciManStev described:

Then they pick it up, and see where the dust either mounds up, or is pushed away.

Isn't this what the present time dentists do, too? They fill a hole, put some sort of colour indication paper there and tell you to bite a few times. Then they look in and drill away extra stuff.

PK
