1) Message boards : Number crunching : Need help bringing my old computer back into use. (Message 1592994)

Post:
Deleted old software, the new download gives an error after looking for availble drive space, looking for drive G, which it doen't have. I did have an external drive hooked up years ago, it's on another computer now.

Will try again & post the exact error message when I get a chance to try it again. Windows is currently doing an update. (I thought Microsoft wasn't supporting XP anymore.)

....There are some workrounds for the non-existent removable drive G: in trac ticket [trac]#815[/trac] - see my comment no. 6 for an example on XP.

Okay, I edited the registry, changed the G to C, that allowed me to download the software. Good idea, thank you.

Have been trying bring my old computer back into use, It's an oldie, Compaq Presario 2100 1.7 GHz XP, had this running years ago.

Getting an error message, Can't connect to SETI@home server, it may be down. Please try again later. For more info see http://setiathome.berkeley.edu. Server host unknown [Error-26;0]

The software shows version 3.08. At the welcome screen, it's giving me two options, "First time user", or "Returning user (log in to existing account)"

I've been trying the "Returning user" option, gettng the above error message each time.

Do I need to use another username / email address, then merge the computers ? I do not fully understand the merge option, just guessing.

Thank you for any support.
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Performance issue, 18+ hours for wu. (Message 1589713)

That surprizes me, my older xp w/ 2 GB computer years ago ran these, it wasn't a fast computer.

My current laptop is acer, Intel Core 2 solo 1.4 Ghz 800 Mhz w/ 4 GB should at least run faster than the old one. The fan just idles, doesn't appear to be working hard at all.

The last non vlar wu ran in about 9 hours.

Begining to wonder if the power consumed is worth being part of the collective.

Joined back in Dec 2003, now I'm back, Don't remember these work units running this long. Estimate was 9 hours, Latest one took 18+ hours to complete. Thought my computer would run these faster.

Hope someone can look at this log and give me some pointers. Thanks.

It's been at least 7 months.

I put in two requests, every 3 or 4 months

Are you getting any notification that the team founder has denied the request??

* edit * I'll assume that you aren't. Your best bet to try and get it figured out would probably be to email Eric Korpela about it. korpela@ssl.berkeley.edu He may be able to help you more than I am able to. * edit *

No, haven't heard a thing. Thanks for the email address, I sent Eric a message.

I Requested team Initiate transfer a few months ago, never heard anything.

The founder has not activity for about a year.

I've requested this a few times now. How much longer do I need to wait ?

Started Einstein again, it downloaded 5 wu's estimates 40:35 to complete each wu.

Any other projects have wu's that run quicker ?

Again, thank you for starting the post. Would have loved to get that laptop back, as it contained hundreds of photos I've taken over the years. My fricking nephew stole it. Most likely sold it for whatever.

Oh well, Life goes on.

Oh well , I guess no reply. It was worth a try. Thanks.

Thanks for starting this for me.

I know the laptop was taken to Washington state, after that, the trail runs cold.

It was run in the backround at start up.

Not a joke, I had a Compaq laptop stolen awhile back. Would love to get it back.

Okay, I stopped & rebooted. That worked.

The three wu's that were waiting are now downloaded.

Thanks for the hints.
