21) Message boards : Number crunching : Which is the best CPU configuration? (Message 1280338)

ok.....read through this thread....but....how does one configure this to happen? In the prefs it only allows you to deal with % not selecting cores. Does this have to be done in one of the files manually?

No, you can't configure individual hosts for what apps they run (via the website), But you have four venues/locations, so you can setup four different sets of preferences,
but that isn't always good enough, (you can't exclude AP from the CPU and only send them to the GPU, and the same with MB)
If you do an app_info you can have any combination you want, ie AP only on the CPU, and MB only on the GPU, or vice versa.

Thanks. I'm not looking to get too picky, but I would like the abilty to run more GPU wu's on the stronger machines. Let the computer 'stock-up' on those so it has a nice batch so it does not run out. Oh well, might just leave it all auto and let seti do the brain work for me.

Awwww....what happened to all the AP ATI/AMD tasks?! I was receiving a lot of them, spitting them out quickly, then all of sudden....no more :( I guess the AP tasks go as quickly as they come for the GPU's. Hopefully after the long weekend we will get treated to some more.

Is there any way to configure the prefs for each individual computer for what tasks you want to accept, not just the general overall ones?

a replacement fan for an ATI/AMD GPU is $15 online. An aftermarket HSF much quieter than the original costs around $50 A gpu is much more expensive. I'd rather burnout a fan than the GPU[/quote]

What if the fan burns out when no one is home? will the GPU shut down and prevent it from damaging itself if it gets too hot (without any additional 3rd party software installed)?

Curious if people are noticing their GPU's lasting a certain amount of time before failing (1 year, 2 years)?

On my Nvidia set up I'm not too concerened because I have a lifetime warranty from EVGA on the card, but the AMD card is OEM, although if it does crash I would upgrade it and try to find another one of those warranty deals (not sure if they are still offered or offered on those cards).

I'm curious around what temp people get concerned about their GPU? Currently my AMD shows it is at 77C (172F), to me that is hot, but the fan speed is set to auto and only on 33%. I hit manual and pushed it to 100% and she quickly dropeed into the 50's. At what point to I need to be concerened? Activity on the card is jumping from around 65% to 80%.

Wow, this is going well now!

The ATI desktop (i7-2600 @3.4 - 8 cores) that is set to 25% processor usage + any GPU tasks is currently crunching 2 wu's on the cpu and a 3rd AP unit on the GPU. Seti keeps feeding it the AP GPU units! I would be scared to see what would happen if I let it all go at 100%. Not sure the system could take it, or my wallet with the cost of electricity here!

In general BOINC will selectively get work for the most capable processor first.

This explains the fact that your "Nvidia PC" sees mostly CUDA work units.

ATI GPU need a lot of support from the CPU (unlike Nvidia one), so it is possible that by restricting your CPU usage you are all but preventing the GPU from working, hence only seeing CPU work and not GPU work.

Remove the CPU restrictions and you should see an increase in the amount of work the ATI GPUs see, and a general increase in the number of work units you get through

I think you nailed it. The 'nvidia PC' is an older XPS that I upgraded a number of things in, including the processor (Pentium D @3.6), but it is running a EVGA 9600GT card. I know that processor is no match for that card so it is just feeding the hungry card.

I just looked and it says the ATI/AMD system at my house received 2 AP unit for the card!

Are AP WU's the only ones that can be crunched on the ATI/AMD cards these days?

I was wondering if it matter what % I set my processor to use vs what I get for work unit types. I am currently using 4 systems, 3 are set to 50% (all dual core) and 1 is set to 25% (8 cores).

1 is a laptop with integrated graphics (50%) - I currently have plenty of 6.03 enhanced for the cpu and 2 ap units - all in all what i would expect

1 desktop with an nvida card (50%), seems to get mainly all cuda units, with the occasional 6.03 cpu unit tossed in

1 desktop with an ati card (50%), seems to get just like the laptop, cpu unit and a couple ap cpu units.

1 desktop with an ati card (25%), this is the most advanced system and all I have is 6.03 cpu units.

I know the whole ATI/AMD thing is newer, are wu's rare or do I need to set my % higher to be able to get these units for the GPU's.

I have it set in my prefs to receive them.

I am getting the 'no work' on all 3 of my systems. I am back after taking about a year off of crunching (the program was just not stable, but a lot better now.) The systems all picked up a nice chunck of work to start with, then received work for the next few days, then nothing. My one system just ripped through the cuda units and now is empty. My prefs have check marks by all 4 programs for work.

All is good now, about mid-day all the machine came to life and started to receive work again. Stepped up my buffer of units so this will not happen again.

Well at least I was able to attach to the project today, obviously no work, but one step at a time I guess! I guess the one good thing about all this is a lower electrical bill this month :)

I don't mind waiting....but I have never seen, what to me is, such a big outage. My one system ran out over a week ago and still nothing. Like I said, it can not even attach. Obviously I will wait it out, crossing my fingers sooner than later!

I have been a long time cruncher, I know the system has its issues, nothing it ever perfect and I know they do the best they can. However, it is now the 20th of October and I still can not connect to get work! I would say it has been 10-15 days now? Is this right? I read on the technical page that they were having issues but that was last updated on the 13th. I run the optimized apps so I deleted everything from one of my systems, and downloaded the current boinc version, 3 days now and it can not even attach to seti. I just want to make sure I am not the only one here. If so, curious if they have a clue when it will be back up and running. I'm not in a race nor do I get paid to crunch but I also do not want my computers to site idle when they could be doing something useful.

Thanks!

I am really cofused how you can say that (max 200Mhz)?!?! Have you been watching the cell phone market recently? Look at the new Droid from Verizon:

1Ghz Snapdragon Processor

It is only going up, and fast, from here!
35) Message boards : Number crunching : Hard Drive on its way out - Options??? (Message 977399)
Posted 1165 days ago by Profile BigWaveSurfer
Ok - New drive and Windows 7 arrived today!

I am not going to 'image' over the bad drive, this is a good time to upgrade to 7, thanks for those options and info on how to do it though, maybe come in helpful in the future!

Since I have the 2 bays....

Can I install 7 onto the new drive in the 2nd bay and essentially run two OS, depending on which one I boot from?

I would like to do that for the short term, giving me time to load all my software back on the machine. Then eventually junk the old drive and put my in my 'real' second drive. Short term back-ups would be to my external drive.

Thanks!

Original drive is a 250GB Maxtor, 5 years old now.
2nd drive is:
WD 1 TB, SATA 3 Gb/s, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM

New replacement drive is:
WD 1 TB, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache, 7200 RPM

I have been looking to upgrade to windows 7, this gives me a good excuse I guess! I figure I am eventually going to do the switch, why do this all over again in another year or so.

Thanks! Ordered a new 1TB drive, and Windows 7, both should be here in a couple days, hopefully the old drive will hold out that long! I unplugged the fans, hoping it might be one of them, no luck though, but wanted to be 100% sure. I hate reloading all the software, takes so LONG, especially with updates and all. Oh well, at least I can be thankful I caught it early and did not lose something important!

Hmmm.... I like the idea of having the OS on one drive and data on the other (of course also backing up the data to another drive as well). I am going to backup my data now and order a new drive. I will run this one until the new one gets here, if it makes it that far. At least I will have the data I need. I guess I will just do a new install....

Now the question is if I am going to do a re-install do I upgrade to Windows 7!!!???? Running Vista now.

Couple days ago my desktop has been a little 'noisy', thought it might be a fan that needed cleaning. Woke up this morning and system was down. Restarted and opened the case, 'ugly' noises coming from main hard drive, but it does still boot up, for how long who knows!

Current drive is 5 years old, I have a 6 month old 1TB drive in the 2nd bay used for photo back up.

Can I just transfer the contents of 'C' over to the new drive and use that as the primary/boot drive? Is there anything special that I need to do in the BIOS?

I plan to replace the 'bad' drive but would like to not have to reinstall all my programs and updates!

Thanks!!!

Posted 1171 days ago by Profile BigWaveSurfer
Too much!! I have never bought anything specifically to run Seti, but I have been running it for a long time, not as long as some others though.

Recently I have stopped running it at my home, electricy here is expensive and I noticed a HUGE drop in my bill when I stoped running it cpu/gpu. I do still run it at my work, electricity is cheaper there.
