Scratch that solution. Everything goes back to the way they were when you click on "show all tasks". Rats. Still would have been nice if it worked.

I thought about the problem after I went to bed.

I wanted to get all the work units that were to be done in October near the top of the que. So I highlighted all the November work units, clicked suspend, and all the work units that had to be done in October jumped to the top. I then re-enabled the November units so everything looked normal.

Having dealt with the Boinc manager since 2001 I knew there had to be a way. It's not the smartest piece of software in the world. I realize you suggested not monkeying around with the units, but I have noticed in the past that Boinc isn't terribly sophisticated. Especially when it crunched a unit that was two weeks past its due date, and I got bupkus for it because it had expired.

I have 94 work units to be done. Some must be done by October 14. Others can be done by mid November. My computer can only do a few work units each day. My problem is this : a lot of work units that start in just a few days away will expire in November. If this happens a lot of work units due in early October will not get done on time. Is there some way I can select which work unit gets done ? I'm not talking about two or three work units that will expire. I have about forty work units that are due to expire in mid October.

Thanks

Ok, I just know that's pretty simple question, and I just know there has got to be an equally simple answer. I want to keep Seti@Home running when I'm not connected to the internet or off-line. I have a finite amount of time I can be on line with my dial-up connection. It's probably a very simple change to my computer preferences. I'd really appreciate a really simple answer, and if its not too much trouble a step by step solution that looks like this -

1. go to the page marked...
2. scroll down the list of preferences till you see...
3. Tick the box called...

Ok...You've done it.

Thanks Tom (A returning Seti user)

I'm leaving Seti@home because the work it's being asked to do is killing my computer.

I downloaded the newest version of Boinc which seemed to improve transfer speeds. However, it seems to be putting a strain on my hard disk. When I boot up there is this horrid crunching sound which I've learned from experience is heard before a hard disk failure. Also an annoying hum is heard when it's simply crunching numbers and has been on for more than one hour. The hum gets louder the longer Boinc is running. I know the cause is Boinc because when I stop it the hum stops.

I uninstalled Boinc this morning and things are much quieter.

See ya 'round the galaxy.

Is there any way to request certain files ?. My computer just finished an AstroPulse file which labeled it with a the label " Computation Error ". I've got a 56K modem and a dial-up connection ...ok that means my computer can download one (1) file at top speed. A 10 MB file takes over a hour. It takes my computer about 18 hours or longer just to download one of those beasties, forever to crunch it, so to avoid wasting time working on a file that could be riddled with errors, and saving me time crunching the files can I request files that are 8 MB and less ?

Pardon the pun but the size of the AstroPulse files they are astronomically huge. If my computer can't deal with them (this is the second Astropulse file that had errors)they are waste of my time crunching them, and a waste of time for SETI/Boinc to send them to me. Send the 366K work units by the bushel if you want. But keep the Astropulse files. Can anything be done ?

I have 5 work units that have completed doing whatever it is they do. Two of them have been around for almost two hours. Do I send them in ? I thought Seti took them from my computer when they were finished.

Thanks for the answer. I won't muck about with the registry - thats what did in one of my previous computers. It seems the more Microsoft changes things the more dangerous they become. I'm going to steer clear of the registry, and let it do what its doing. If it works...it works.

Confirmed compu-coward.

And I agree... Pluto is a planet.

I just joined the other day, so if this questions already been asked, and dealt with, please don't howl "Read the FAQs Newbie"

When I've been online for a short time a work unit is sometimes uploaded. The thing that puzzles me is that even though I'm connected, and the manager reads "Download: Active" nothing is sometimes uploaded to my computer for about twenty seconds, and the speed reads 0.00 KBs.

Thanks

Tom Austin
