Hi.
Yes.
a) I aborted those few tasks because they were sent (automatically? by SETI?) to a "sensitive" PC. I have tried to get more SETI GPU tasks on a less "sensitive" PC but no joy yet thanks to the regular SETI outage.
b) I promise I'm not running an optimise app because ... ummm see my original post :o)
c) nor an app of my own because ... I wouldn't know how to begin.

PS ...
I see nothing but aborted work from you
... which proves my point a) above? That is ... How could I possibly have aborted any running SETI GPU work that has been sent/received/started to process & then abort if it wasn't ermmm ... sent, received, processing started? Or maybe ... there's something out there ~ ~ ~
FWIW if I remember correctly, there were three SETI GPU taks received, each was about 116 hours duration but that's not important right now.

Thanks all.
I've received a few GPU tasks automatically from SETI running under non-optimised app (who knows?) - will post here again when I have more data.
(SETI servers are currently up & down like a fiddlers' elbow.)

Please understand that if the answer is no, then no is OK.
If the answer is yes then I will stop bothering brainiac and instead I will seek advice elsewhere to avoid clogging the SETI forum server :-)

Thanks, Ray

... or else please, please keep it simple*.

Thanks, Ray

* NOT SIMPLE
For cards without OpenCL support (from HD2xxxx on) use the 'hybrid' r453
Astropulse application. NB this is a combined CPU/GPU application and will only
use the GPU for some of the calculations, while doing the rest on a CPU core.
Minimum driver version Catalyst 9.x

Eh? Why? Is it relevant to my question? How? Explain, please ...

I really want to understand these erudite replies but the more I ask the deeper the fog.

I don't need fog.

De-fogger ...

The HD3850 supports double precision.

Lunatics_Win32_v0.38_setup install refers to newer cards and also refers to support for older cards than HD4xxx WITHOUT double precision.

The question ... is there an optimised app for this older card that DOES support double precision? A direct link would be nice :-)

I truly appreciate the replies but none answer the question in a clear, simple way (sorry!).

E.g., have you tried
this zip
using an HD3850 - yes. What result did you get - I got gobblydygook.
You can look here for more information on the latest Lunatics installer.
I did but thanks for that.
I don't think it's necessary to be capable of double precision
Are you sure?

FWIW I've read every post on http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=55690

FWIW2 Imagine you are trying to do this without any prior knowledge of Lunatics and are trying to do this for the very first time ... err like me :-)

*FWIW my confusion arises from the phrase "... you're limited to ... using [the] old Hybrid AP app".
What EXACTLY does that mean?
To clarify:- there are multiple & conflicting/mutually exclusive choices during install - which is why I'm asking the question, I guess.
As I said ...
Lunatics_Win32_v0.38_setup install refers to newer cards and also refers to support for older cards than HD4xxx WITHOUT double precision.

New (!) HD3850 installed specifically to crunch SETI GPU tasks.
(It processes Collatz & DNETC GPU tasks seamlessly, very quickly and runs very cool thanks to ATI Tray Tools ATT ver 1.7.9.1557.)

Lunatics_Win32_v0.38_setup install refers to newer cards and also refers to support for older cards than HD4xxx WITHOUT double precision. (I'm confused about the inference that HD4xxx+ cards are double precision but that's another story so please ignore.)

The HD3850 supports double precision ... which is why I bought it after much research.

The question ... is there an optimised app for this older card that DOES support double precision? A direct link would be nice :-)

Thanks, Ray

Currently testing an i7-2600K (Sandy Bridge), stock speed, stock cooler* & 50% CPU usage.
8 WU's running, it consumes 60watts less than my (very) old, similarly configured EE 3.4 P4, stock speed & 20% CPU usage, aftermarket cooler, running 2 WU's.
The i7 runs incredibly cool at those settings.
WU's complete much more quickly too!
* the i7 stock cooler looks puny but that's because the CPU is so efficient. Google a bit and you'll see how, on previous i7's, heatsinks got ridiculously big.
(I have no association with Intel other than as a retail customer.)

2.86 amps is 696 watts @ 240v ... you won't need to turn up the heating anytime soon unless you shift Massive amounts of air to the outside world

;-)

Assume the power bill is paid by the Bank of Mum & Dad :-))

My advise FWIW is to ditch them (sorry for being blunt), get a few 2-3 year old new/end-of-line laptops with, say T57xx CPUs & 3gb RAM each etc which will also cope with other projects that require massive RAM.

By my research three such items will draw 150 watts tops, more like 120 watts average and need little active external cooling. Active local cooling will reduce the wear & tear on the laptops' internal fans BTW.

With respect to all:- when dedicated people who have an extremely long history (10 years+ devoted to SETI) decide to post here for the first/second/fourth etc time _EVER_ in their membership ... there seems to be a fundamental problem that is not being addressed.

I agree with these members' views - please consider this a positive endorsement, guys 'n gals, of your considerable and patient SETI experience.

Perhaps a petition is in order?

For, say 1mm plastic, think Qmax (google it): noise-free, electricity-free, burr-free, heat/melt-free, consistently precise every time pretty much indefinitely, for round, square or rectangular holes.
I've been using Qmax for about 40 years, wouldn't use anything else.
Also, it isn't limited to cutting plastic. Mild steel, aluminium, etc etc will get cut the same.
A little expensive, yes but a reliable, dependable long-term investment.

I've cut holes in plastic using a soldering iron. It might not work for all plastics, but you could try it on a small area that is due to be cut out anyway.

Never a good idea ... think toxins/carcinogens!

The cheapest solutions when using the existing cooler, in order of preference;-
Open a window (it's -2C here so that would be OK for a 20C drop!)
Open a window and a door (might not be a popular choice with family at -2C)
Put the PC on the floor (not on the desk)
Remove the PC cover (if the case is a constraint)
Underclock

After that, start spending money, in ascending order of cost;-
If you have one, use a simple mains fan (cost is only the excess electricity)
If you have one, use an airconditioner (cost is only the excess electricity)
Modify the case (if it is a constraint) to make it more efficient
Upgrade CPU cooler
and so on ...

(FWIW commercial server rooms move VAST amounts of air throug and exhaust VAST amounts of heat ... out of the server room.)

Definitely bearings.
Definitely RMA.

I've tested over 1,000 fans from 20x8mm to 120x25mm and every single one new.
1 in 100 (average) is bad for this very reason and I have tried everything from running-in, heat-stressing & re-oiling (waste of time on a new fan but I live in hope) to hitting with hammer (joke) ... a bad, new fan will always be bad.

HTH, Ray
FWIW RMA in the UK includes zero cost to buyer ... from reputable sellers ... as in "Not of merchantable quality".)
FWIW2 Worn-out is a whole different story, involving bearing type/nature of dirt ingress etc etc ... I've had some luck with this issue by re-oiling, obviously with a suitable lubricant for the bearing type.

OOOOOOOOHHHHH! LOADS of tasks.
Sorry for the stoopid post. I have no idea how the Task List was set to just "Show (only) active tasks".
Suggest restart/reboot should default to "Show all tasks"?
Most of my related threads/posts over the past couple of days are hereby defunct!

OK, this is completely weird.

Concerned that one PC was running out of work I did an "Update" ... paused for a while, altered the CPU priority to accelerate an existing task then ...

A new task appeared from nowhere.
When I checked "Properties" it appears that it had been downloaded 8 days ago. (I promise that task was not present in the past 8 days.)

Then a second task appeared from nowhere, same reported download date.

I have checked the current "Transfers" list and the "Messages" list ... neither shows any evidence of for download of these tasks within the past 5 hours.

What the **** [my asterisks]
