41) Message boards : Number crunching : How much improvement do optimized clients give? (Message 529159)

If optimization improves crunch times so much, why not detect the client's cpu and send it optimized binaries right from the start?

This project doesn’t have the resources to develop optimized apps; there are only a handful of staff and grad-student programmers, who are already busy developing & debugging apps for the Beta project.

Yeah, I guessed that. But then again - there are obviously working apps which are optimized. Why not check and then integrate those?

One could look at the crunch times of the default cruncher and compare them to the times of the optimized cruncher. It is very important to compare several units of each credit range; for example, 12-, 18-, 25-30-, 45-50- and 60-65-credit units. Usually the angle range (how far the scope drifts through the stars during the unit's 107-second collection time) determines the number of credits assigned to each unit.

OK, thanks!
But to do this, I have to be able to switch back to the default app. How can I do this?

But I expect the next credits uproar, because this will lead to less credits per time in comparsion to the optimized ones yet, as everything coming from the project direct is just standard and has to recieve the same credits like other projects.

Good point, but on the other hand the most important thing is science ;)
And moreover it's even more unfair now, as only people who know of the optimized binaries can benefit from them...

Here is a link to our class page stat in case you haven't found it and are interested.

Class of May 23, 1999

Thanks. I still know that one :D

Hello :)
Thanks for the answer, class mate ;)

*edit* One more question: If optimization improves crunch times so much, why not detect the client's cpu and send it optimized binaries right from the start?

Hello!

I've just installed these optimized binaries for my Core Duo processor. How much of an improvement in terms of crunch times will they give me?

First of all: Sorry for posting this allthough it had allready been discussed. Didn't know that.

Regarding coding effort and too few manpower: SETI@home has a huge userbase, each of these users have their talents, their should accidently be some who could (and perhaps would) code something like that in their freetime. I mean, people also compile own optimised versions etc...

In short, Folding@home uses ATI's X1900 GPUs to better fold proteins. (Increase of calculations by 20 or 30 times...)
Would that technique be able to help SETI@home as well, or ar the calculations of a completely different nature?

Then you can print it out through http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/cert_print.php

No, these are different certificates (not the ones that I want).

_PLEASE_ let me adjust my account before the website goes offline :(

Hi,

although this concerns the SETIclassic website I post it here in hope for quick help, as the classic project will be down in a day or two :-(

I recently reached the 5000 milestone (although it has had to be due to that bug, I shouldn't have hit this mark tonight already...), and thus I wanted to print out the 5000 certificate. Before printing certificates, I always change my profiles nickname to my realname, unfortunately, this doesn't work anymore. The CGI Script just answers:

"CGI error

Command not recognized"

Any help is appreciated, although the situation during the recent weeks doesn't make me very hopeful...

Have a look at this article from a German PC magazine: http://www.pcwelt.de/news/hardware/109635/index.html
Use babelfish to translate, or just have a look at the diagrams on the subpages...

Transfers only occur while uploading results or downloading workunits, that seems to be normal.
But I do have the smae problem with workunits not getting accounted for :/ I surely hope they don't get lost completely...
