When I was a college freshman they told me that once somebody installed SETI@home at all computers without telling the admin and they were wondering why the heck all MATLABs and stuff were working that slowly?! ;-)

From what I remember is that the old SETI didn't use graphic card to generate the plots but CPU so if someone forgot to close the plot's window it took loooonger to calculate WU. I think there's info about the differences on the website.

And further more we may never meet any ET. Imagine that the difference between us and them is as huge as a difference between , e.g., a bee and us. I doubt any bee knows that we are here. ;-)

Fortunately things are changing. I recently read an article by some guy from NASA who said that everything "easy" has been done and there are no more objectives that a single nation can achieve. A good example is a planned mission to Jupiter by NASA and ESA. It was supposed to be two separate missions but thanks to some smart people they will work together.
And the other thing about space is, as some of you said, politics. I've been to a lecture given by one of the engineers building ATV and she said they were once visited by a group of NASA engineers. The ATV team had a problem with some part (can't remember what it was) and they asked the NASA guys if they could suggest a solution. Unfortunately the answer was "Yes, we have the solution, no, we cannot give you any hints due to 'knowledge export regulations' but would really like to!". So the ATV people had to invent something that was already invented! And in my opinion that is the biggest problem in science. BTW the opposite thing happened between China and Russia. The Chinese just bought schematics for the space ship and space suit from Russians. Now that's a cooperation.

To be honest, I'd like to see The Terran Space Agency one day.<dreamer>

50GB per 24Hrs is only about 5Mb/s 24/7 - Just hook up a WLAN to a dish - easy - plenty of spare b/w too. :)

Actually to use less bandwidth they put computers on the space probes/telescopes so they can make the preliminary data handling and just send down to Earth the really relevant data.

I think that the LaGrangian Point is almost a million miles from Earth. From that distance the Earth will not quite cover the Sun. But I could be wrong.

There are 5 points and the most interesting one is L2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagrangian_point) and to answer other question about power NASA is going to put the James Webb Space Telescope in that point and as you can see there will be solar panels on the telescope http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/JWST.jpg.

Some time ago I read about an array of around 5 telescopes that could be put on the Jupiter's orbit and look exclusively for exoplanets. Unfortunately I don't have any more info about that and probably it was something more like science-fiction.

And the other thing about the elaboration is that rockets=military (no matter if they're launch by NASA, Virgin Galactic or anybody else) so if the military had told them to say silent due to the Soviet threat they had_to_be_silent and that's it.
I have to say this, But in this case You really don't know what You're talking about, As in the USA things are run differently here than in the rest of the world. Not all Rockets are owned by the Military or have to have Military clearance, As the Military doesn't make the rules here, Civilians do, As in We the People, And here's another example, The Head of the Military here(The Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon) takes orders from a Civilian, I think You've heard of the President of the United States of America.
As NASA is a Civilian Agency of the US Government and has always been independent of the US Military and all the Rockets are made for NASA and not for the Military.

I'm not saying that all rockets are owned by the military or that *all* of them need military clearance. I've been told by an astronaut that when he was flying to space they needed a military clearance because it's the law (similar thing is that you cannot hire a foreigner in a space industry due to the government regulations). And about the President... Lets be honest. Imagine the following situation: they ask him "Mr. President should we strike with 10 or 11 missiles?". What would he do? Guess? Maybe his an expert in military operations? I think he'd probably ask his adviser what to do, therefore it wouldn't be his pure decision. Sure he would sign the order but if the attack would be unsuccessful it wouldn't be his fault.

And other, possible but not very probable thing is that it can be sth with the power which can jump/be unstable. The only thing to do then is to buy UPS. Oh yes and also might be a faulty power supply.

Please! Not again "we're all gonna die in 2k12" nonsense. Two things:
1) Nibiru is approaching. Great but since it's going to hit us in ~3 yrs and is let's say the size of Mars then it MUST be visible even in a small telescope/binoculars (why? because journey from Earth to Mars takes more than half a year and I don't thing the planet has a rocket propulsion... so it's somewhere in the asteroids belt). Anybody seen it? Oh I forgot that NASA+CIA+Mossad+KGB+* made it top secret. So get your telescope and look search for clues! Good luck...
2) few links
No Doomsday in 2012
2012: No Planet X
2012: Planet X is not Nibiru
2012: No Killer Solar Flare
2012: No Geomagnetic Reversal
2012: No Comet

Take care and don't let THEM brainwash you! ;-)
13) Message boards : Number crunching : How does ocing effect Cuda? (Message 885040)
Posted 13 Apr 2009 by Profile Dywanik
Post:
That's a very good question. I don't have a CUDA to test it, however, I believe the answer is: it depends. ;-) Depends from the way you're overclocking your CPU. You usually do it by changing FSB and multiplier, e.g., you can get 2000 MHz both by having FSB 200MHz and multiplier 10 as well as FSB 100MHz and multiplier 20. And here is the point: when you have higher FSB you're overclocking your whole computer, therefore your CUDA would be more efficient for the first case.
BUT that won't be that significant unless you're o/c pr0 who benchmarks everything. ;-)

Dear Friends in Space!
I'm planning to set up a SETI/BOINC oriented system. I've been reading lots of posts and unfortunately my research is inconclusive. Therefore you guys are my last hope. ;-) So to clear a little bit. The system should cost at most $1000, should be eco friendly (low power consumption) and size doesn't matter. And now, I discovered myself (+read about it ;)) that the most important thing in CPU is L2 cache (I have Pentium M 1.8 GHz 2MB which is more efficient that Xeon 2.6 GHz 512 KB) but what about L3 cache? As far as I know it's little less accessible for the core than L2 but Itaniums and i7s has lots of it... And now there's also the CUDA thing... I'll appreciate any suggestions! Thx in advance and happy crunchin'! :-)

Warsaw Uprising begins

It was intended to last for two days but continued for two months. 138,000 - 218,000 people died during the events. Uprisers were trying to unleash Warsaw from the Nazis but they failed. The Red Army was supposed to help Polish soldiers but they were just standing few kilometers from the city doing nothing.
