I actually ordered the new reservoir/pump at a local retailer, and havent received any info on the expected delivery date yet.

I wont call myself an EK fan as such, but the stuff I use from them is very well made, and has run fine. I have had no complaints.
Their TR waterblock is sadly a little lacking compared to others (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjvqPT2CmqI), but off course only when you really push the system.

I just checked my mails, and the XSPC pump/reservoir that broke down, was ordered just under 4 years ago (46 months). I don't think I can actually complain about that as it was not an expensive kit, but breakdowns are irritating nonetheless.

With the new EK pumps MTBF, I expect a longer lifespan. Its also a much more expensive kit.

I have been trying to run seti on my NAS computer that runs based on Centos/Fedora.

I am able to run e.g. World Community grid and Rosetta, but with Seti, after some time, the crunching starts to fail.

In the results for the WU's I get this:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what(): std::bad_alloc
SIGABRT: abort called
Stack trace (12 frames)

Is this the same problem as described in this thread?

Nice to hear that your system is back in working order.

I guess your kind of setup really separates the lambs from the goats :)

I am strugling with my setup too.
Off course things break during the holidays, so I'll have to wait even longer for replacements.

Good thing I had a few alternative parts lying around, so that it is at least working, even though not at fast as a few days ago :)

Astropulse V7, choose AVX.

Multibeam V8, choose AVX (it's the best for Ryzen / Threadripper).

ATI, skip it (click on Next), you have NVidia GPU's.

Astropluse v7 (NVidia), enable.

Multibeam V8 (NV Cuda), enable and choose the option with SoG_r3557 in the end (the last one).

The last page with Intel iGPU's skip it (click on Next), they are not relevant for your AMD CPU.

Next window click on Install.

That should do it.

Since there doesn't seem to be any fixes on the way for the invalid crunching of AP on AMD RXxx0 (RX400 and 500 series (possibly also Vega?)) GPU's, I have added the following to the <options> section of my cc_config.xml:

<exclude_gpu>
<url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/</url>
<device_num>1</device_num>
<app>astropulse_v7</app>
</exclude_gpu>

This will exclude my RX480 (device 1) from running AstroPulse WU's, but still let them run on my HD7770 (which is device 0).

I would recommend anyone with RXxx0 cards that they do the same until this problem is resolved. Just be certain that you exclude the correct GPU.

Otherwise we risk that invalid WU's get validated, if they happen to be paired with another RXxx0 card.

Well, then you're welcome :)

I sent them 1 GRC yesterday, just to see how it works. Its all very new to me :)

Now I'm just twidling my thumbs, waiting for coins to start rolling in from the pool (it takes time to build up your magnitude).

Its of course irritating that you cant get it to work, and I hope you find a fix.
Its my impression that AMD support on the Linux platform has been much improved (extremely much), much of it because the drivers are now open source (AFAIK), so I think theres a good chance for it to get solved.

I find it frustrating that the works gets done, time is spent, and then the results are invalid. I really hope this gets fixed one day.

Sorry, I was not clear.

They dont error out, they just dont validate. Some of them does, but most of them don't.

It is especially bad when two GPU's of the RXxx0 type validate against each other. The WU's validate, but the data is actually invalid.

But as you have two RX 480's, and assuming you aren't just running seti, you should be fine.

What appears as two RX480's is actually 1 RX480 and 1 HD7770. Boinc simply displays the best GPU, instead of showing them individually.

I'm running a mix of different projects, and will be fine tuning to get the best payout as I go along, so to get to the point where I can go solo as fast as possible.
I would like to run Seti at about 50% of the time, but we'll see how that pays off.

Regarding MB's on GPU, it has been available from a time long before AP. So you should be able to find it.
And AP's errors out on RXxx0's under windows too (they run fine on the HD7770). There is a bug in the code somewhere (either the driver or the app). For a short time I had Raistmer looking into it, but he seems to be busy with other things.

Yes, it sometimes does look like a scam.

As I read it Gridcoin only recently became this hard to join. Not that long ago you could join, and start making coins within a few days, going solo. As it is now, if you don't have a larger amount of coins, you will not even get paid every 6 months (where the 1.5% interest starts to get deleted).

So this has gotten much harder to get into, and that is kind of sad, as it will scare many peoble away. It almost did with me....

I see that your system is pretty much identical to mine.

So if I can get 20c a day, I would be rather satisfied. I was hoping to do 10.

I have an extra HD7770 crunching also, so perhaps I can get to 21 :)

Well, since I wrote the first post I have learned some things myself.

To start up in Gridcoin without any Gridcoins in your wallet (or very few), is very hard, bordering on impossible.

You have to have several thousand to get any kind of regular payouts.

So if your going solo, your prospects are not good, unless you are willing to put some money / other coins into your Gridcoin wallet to get going.

I have chosen another route. I have joined a pool. This means you give up all your credit (RAC), participating in the pool. But as a result you get regular payments, and can get some coins in your wallet pretty fast.
Apart from loosing your BOINC credits, you also pay a small fee to the maintenance of the pool.

In a couple of months, when I have accumulated enough coins to get payouts at least once every two weeks (or there about), I'll go solo again, and claim my credits for myself.

Until then my RAC will be diving.

But when I go solo again, I'll be in a position where all the coins I make can be donated to Seti@home.

I'll just have to have some patience :)

I don't know is this is the right forum for this, but here it goes.

Seeing that Seti now accepts gridcoins for donations, I have decided to try and join Gridcoin, and see if I can get some coins.

The idea is to donate the coins I get to Seti, so they can use them for whatever they need.

I have found the learning curve to be _very_ steep. But everything seems to be working now.

Anybody here with more experience, that have any good advice?

Well my backup projects (LHC, Milkyway and Einstein) are getting some "love" for the moment.

And I was just trying to build up my RAC her on Seti, to see where my system would actually end up.

It'll have to wait a little longer :)
57) Message boards : Number crunching : Lunatics optimization for Ryzen, any plans? (Message 1902217)
Posted 21 Nov 2017 by Profile Karsten Vinding
Post:
As I understand it (and Raistmer is free to correct me), the basic code is the same for many of the apps.

When you compile the code, you ask the complier to try and optimize for specific instruction sets, and it will try to change some of the coding, so that it uses newer instructions, whenever possible and beneficial.
The end result of this kind of optimization is very reliant upon the compilers ability to do this well, and probably to some extend, the person running the compiles, and his abilities to use the correct parameters. The last part probably comes down to a lot of trial and error.

In the code itself, there is some handwritten very well optimized code, that the compiler is told to keep its hands of. That is probably the SSE3 code base?

It would be nice to have a more Ryzen specific codepath, but its probably not a small job, and there would have to be a lot of experimentation. I once tested on such a project on older AMD hardware at lunatics, where the resulting AMD specific code was 5-10% faster.
It can probably be done, and there could be large benefits, but it takes a lot of time.

OK.

I'm at the computer now, so I can provide some more detail.

The file I'm using is "mb_cmdline_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATi_HD5.txt"

And the settings I use are these.

<device0>
-pref_wg_size 64 -sbs 512 -period_iterations_num 1 -tt 1500 -hp -high_perf -spike_fft_thresh 2048 -tune 1 64 1 4 -high_prec_timer
</device0>

<device1>
-pref_wg_size 64 -sbs 2048 -period_iterations_num 2 -spike_fft_thresh 2048 -oclfft_tune_gr 256 -oclfft_tune_lr 16 -oclfft_tune_wg 256 -oclfft_tune_ls 512 -oclfft_tune_bn 64 -oclfft_tune_cw 64 -hp -no_defaults_scaling -tune 1 4 4 16 -high_prec_timer
</device1>

Device 0 is the HD7770, and device 1 is the RX480.

Ignore the actual settings, I'm still working on getting them optimized.

The settings file is being read, but somehow the app is not respecting that it should use different settings for each card.

I know it can work, I have had it working before. I'm wondering why it wont anymore?

Perhaps it started when I upgraded the apps from r3557 to r3584, but I'm quite certain it has worked with r3584 also.

Oh, and i recently updated BOINC to the latest version, but still went from a 7.xxx version, to the latest.
Perhaps I should try installing an older BOINC version?

Not much help yet :)

I have tried creating the settings file from scratch, inputting all the variables by hand, but it does not seem to help.

I have tried with notepad, and with another dedicated raw text editor, with no luck.

Anybody have any ideas?
