21) Message boards : Number crunching : help with gtx 295s (Message 1090103)

The computer a a 1000w psu, so plenty there. I did back it down to one wu per card 2 days ago, but they are still generating errors. I just got the cards a few weeks ago and made sure they were clean when I got them prior to installation.I am using the latest geoforce 266.58 drivers, and I do use Lunatics. I give .25 setting on the cpu to feed the cards. Still cant understand why the other card does not show up on the one system. Ran 2 monitors on the old gtx8800s and both shoed up and ran fine. At first I thought maybe a bad card, but I bought extras, so I put one of the others in, and same thing. The control panel for Nvidia does not show SLI per se, but allows me to use multiple monitors, or combine for better results on one (SLI). It is set for multiple monitors.

I put 2 GTX295s in one system that previously had 2 GTX280s.RAC has gone up some, but not really what I was expecting, only about 3000 more. I was expecting them to perform almost as well as the GTX580s. I also noticed this one is producing a lot of errors. I was running 2-3 units per card, then changed it to 1 each, but looks like still getting errors today. Another system I put in 2 GTX295s which had 2 GTX8800s before. Have 2 monitors hooked up to this one and it showed both GTX8800z. Now when I hooked up the 295s it showed 3 295s, and then later it shows on Seti as just 2 cards ( of scourse 1 295 shows as 2)I have another rig which has 2 GTX580s, wfich has dropped RAC since the 11th. AT some point I did change the time for switching tasks from 60min to 300 ( not really sure what this does) and I just changed it back a few moments ago. This is the only thing I changed that I can think of.Oops, actually I did overclock the cards to 850 from the 812 that I had been running them at, but this would seem oppisite of the expected result. Any help here appreciated.

A new GTX590, and a GTX580. Then let the good times roll.
24) Message boards : Number crunching : Mac Boinc problems (Message 1088152)

I will try to check all this out this evening. After reloading Boinc and running Seti, I noticed that only three work units or crunching at a time, when I have 16 cores to do work. I tried restarting, but still the same.

A wise man once said, too much is never enough. Oops, I think that was just the devil in my head talking to me.

That is correct, for now if you want best results, then you should stick with the Nvidia cards. For gaming purposes the ATI you chose can outperform that model Nvidia card.

I DONT KNOW WHAT IT WOULD BE, AS I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS ON A wINDOWS MACHINE. i DID UNINSTALL, DELETE ALL THE LIBRARIES FOR BOINC, AND THE PREFERENCES ALSO. THEN REINSTALLED AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR NOW. I HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE AND IT WORKED FOR A WHILE.

Now you made me actually sit down and think about it. Some computers are used for web browsing, etc, some are worstationsat work, and some are dedicated just for Seti. But all were purchased with this in mind and grossly overkill for their "regular" usage, so really most of the expense can be attributed to Seti. So about 94,000.00 in all. Now I wish I had not really thought about it.

You can use any of the Nvidia cards with this chasis, and then the cost is not nearly so high. Still a lot, just not as much. Mine is already ordered and will be built and running soon I hope. Quadros for our purpose just dont make sense in terms of performance and cost. The enthusiast cards perform much better and cost much less.

I cant show all task, or any function, the communicating with boinc client keeps poping up and wont stop. if i cancel it just pops up again. if it exit boinc manager, then i am not connected to local host. the last 2 days i cant do anything on this computer.

Lately the computer always shows a menu saying communicating with Boinc client, and either it says connected to local host, or connecting to local host, but it is increasingly difficult to get it to work. I even uninstalled Boinc, and trashed all related librarys. That worked for a day at best, then back to the same thing. I have done this several times over the last few months. I never used to have this problem. Cant remeber if it started when Mac OS had an update or not. Running 10.6.6 and latest version of Boinc client. Late 2009 Mac Pro. ALL SETTINGS ON BOINC ARE SAME AS BEFORE, AND SAME AS ALL THE WINDOWS RIGS I HAVE. THE WINDOWS ONES DID THIS A LITTLE A FEW WEEKS AGO AGO, BUT NO PROBLEMS NOW. ANY IDEAS?

Try 3000 watts of power and 8 gtx590s ;-)

The 1st computer I used was in high school. we programed a dragster with horsepower, wheel size, weight, etc and then saw how our car performed. we watched as the race progressed, printed on continous feed paper with a dot matrix. Later my brother had an apple IIc I believe, that I used and the 1st I bought for myself was a Mac SE. My brother bought one at the same time, he got the 20 mb hard drive and I got the dual floppy.( I got this one because I had no idea what a hard drive was or the function it performed haha)

it seems to me that the crew at SETI do the best they can with what resources they have. Much of the work they are doing now seems tedious, and I am sure they wish for fewer problems like the rest of us do. throughout the boards it seems many people are offering to help with funds for new equipment, but no one seems to have a good grasp of what is needed, or the costs associated with that. it would be great if someone at SETI could spend a little time ( once they are able to solve the latest problems of course), and put together their needs, or wishes for new equipment, and best guess at the costs for each system. It is a lot easier to work towered a goal if we know what that goal might be. Just before I joined the GPU Users group they were able to put together the funds for a new unit in a short period of time, and from a relatively small group of people. This is something I would be willing to put more funds into, knowing the goal, than a general donation to SETI. I have read a few threads where others have said similar to this same idea. I a.m newer to the boards, and am not sure the best way to reach the staff at SETI, but I think there is plenty of intrest here to help them with this, and ourselves in turn.

your que is probably waiting for the download of the work units to complete. the system has been down (mostly) for a few days now. they will finish downloading and start processing when they get the sytem running again.
38) Message boards : Number crunching : GTX 580 - are they currently the best cards for Seti crunching? (Message 1075600)

I was going to order this exact computer from this person, and ended up ordering an identical one from digital storm for less money and better warranty. hopefully i will get it soon, in the process of building and testing now
