21) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Stop downloading WUs (Message 112429)

Now, unfortunately, I have work units to report, but it appears that I can't disable downloads, but still report work units that are completed. This is NOT acceptable... Can someone please advise how to accomplish my goals of running out my store of WUs and not getting any further work units, but still report these?

Thanks...

For the record, I was running 4.41 because I needed the "no new work" feature. It appears that the problem of not being able to upload was a bug in that version and that 4.42 fixed it. Just in case anyone else is wanting that feature! :-)

I've been running 4.41 for a few days because I wanted the "no new work" feature. Unfortunately, when that feature was enabled, it wouldn't upload any results either... is that a bug or is that by design? If it's a bug, has that been fixed in the latest Dev release?
Thanks.

Just downloaded and upgraded to 4.42. It appears that this WAS a bug and that it was fixed in this version... Thanks to the programmers for fixing it! I needed the "no new work" feature, but also wanted to be able to report my completed WUs! :-)

Never mind... I went back to the thread I mentioned previously and noticed I needed the "development" version to get that option. I now have the option to not download any more work units and I've enabled that option. Hopefully it'll work. :-)

I'm trying to stop downloading WUs for my work location due to new computer useage policies. I thought I had it figured out when I set my preferences for max download speed to 0 and disk space utilization to 0, however, I noticed this morning that I have new WUs downloaded.

Recalling a previous thread on this subject, I upgraded the version of BOINC to 4.25, but unfortunately, there is no option for "no new work" as is indicated on the Boinc Manager page (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/manager.php)

What version of BOINC is needed for this? Or is this option missing because I installed BOINC as a service? HELP!!!

That's fine... my work machine *is* running Windows (2000 Pro, to be exact!)

Well, I found a way (I think) to disable downloading any new WUs. I set the allowed download speed to "0" and that *seems* to have done it. I may have a look at BOINC Manager still. Thanks.

I have two different entries for my PC at work and I can't seem to get them to merge. Whenever I go to one of them (either one, doesn't matter which) and select "merge this computer" there are never any PCs to merge it with.
Can anyone explain how to do this?
thanks.

Well, I'm running your BOINC client for Athlon-XP right now. Not sure if it's any better than the stock. Never was real sure how to benchmark it... Will have to test and see.

Just wondering if I should be using the Athlon-XP clients or just the standard i686 clients? I've got an "AuthenticAMD Athlon", not an Athlon-XP. Will it make any difference if I use AthlonXP on a NON-XP CPU?
Thanks

Ok. Well, that's what I'm trying... now if only I could connect. :-) I'm aware of the previous firewall issue and realize that the problem now is that everyone's trying to connect, so as long as I eventually get my existing WU's uploaded, I'll be good. :-) Thanks.

I have more than just a single WU. I'm trying to stop it from downloading. If I set disk space to 0MB, it should stop downloading, but allow me to finish crunching what I've got?
Thanks....

I'm trying to stop using my work PC (due to some recent changes in PC use policy) for BOINC. I have set my preferences for my work PC to connect ever 0 days, but it appears to still be downloading new WUs. How do I tell it to just use up what it's got downloaded and never connect again?

Nope, uninstalled, although I did back up the current folder as "copy of..." :-) Too lazy to rename it before I upgraded.

I attempted to upgrade to 4.25, but stepped back when it *appeared* that none of my WUs, or accounts were saved... at least nothing showed up when I upgraded, so I attempted to re-add myself. Is this "normal" behavior for the 4.25 BOINC client? I like the idea that MAYBE the screen saver will work in secure mode now, but why in Heaven's name did they have to go and mess things up by making us UNINSTALL and reinstall? Why wasn't "install over the top of the existing client" good enough?

Just wondering if you know... Maybe some BOINC admin will come along and explain. :-)

I just tried to upgrade to Boinc 4.25 and it didn't seem to save my settings or my WUs, so I uninstalled that version and reinstalled 4.19. My question is, will 4.25 retain my "old" WUs and upload them? It didn't even *appear* to save my account information, but when I stepped back to 4.19, all that information, including my WUs which were ready to report (and the ones I'm currently crunching) were there again.

What gives?

Except with a lot fewer people on S@H Classic, upload/download is much easier and takes place in the background much better so you don't notice the problem as much. The problem with BOINC is that everyone is trying to upload and download WUs at the same time. IIRC, SETI Classic doesn't use the same servers, just the same internet/power. BOINC probably has some sort of limit on the maximum number of connections to the server to prevent an inadvertant Denial of Service attack on the BOINC servers. If you've got tens of thousands of people all trying to connect at once, you're <B>going</B> to have problems.

What part of <B><I>"...It may take some time for the queues to clear"</I></B> don't you understand? If everyone is trying to upload at the same time, there will be a problem uploading completed WUs. We all have the same problem when there's been an outage. There's nothing we can do except continue to retry uploading the results. Eventually everyone will get their completed WUs uploaded and things will be relatively smooth until the next extended outage, at which time everyone will be griping about how they can't upload completed WUs.

SETI/BOINC is being overwhelmed by people trying to report their WUs and get new ones after an extended outage. Things should be back to "normal" soon (whatever that means! )

Theoretically, things will be back to "normal" by tonight (Wednesday, U.S. Eastern) or Thursday, although it might take as late as Friday morning (again, speaking U.S time) for everyone to get their cache filled back up and get everything reported.

Ya know, I work for a telecom company. It seems to me they should just call up Cogent and say "Hey... our broadband link through you guys is down. Fix it." Typically all it should require is rebooting a router or two. At worst, someone may have cut a piece of fiber and they should at least have an ETA on fixing it. Why can't Boinc call up Cogent and get an update on the situation? Obviously it's been down for awhile, so by now SETI or Cogent ought to have an idea what the problem is and how long it'll be before it's fixed!

FWIW, the status page is now updated to show everything is down except for these web pages.
