My systems still have the "schedular down" message as the "latest news" as well. Might want to consider updating that.

I'm trying to get restarted with S@H due to a computer failure last week. I've now rebuilt my computer and when I attach to S@H, I'm unable to connect to the server to download any WUs. BOINC says my internet connection is fine (duh, I'm writing this on the same computer as BOINC is running on! <G>) but I cannot connect to S@H or CPDN. What the heck is going on???

I don't know about CPDN, but today is the scheduled weekly Tuesday outage at S@H.

Yeah, but I thought I read on the front page that the maintenance was complete, or did I mis-read that?

from the console prompt type

ifconfig

make sure you have both a valid eth0 and a valid lo

or you can just ping localhost and make sure it pings 127.0.0.1 if it does not then you need to be sure that lo is in the network startup setups. it is very easy to miss some configuration on a new install.

also as an experiment after verifying the network, i assume you log into the gui as a normal user without root priv.. try from a terminal window either su to root or use sudo

and simply execute boincmgr with no options and see if as root it can connect.

it may be a user permissions thing. make sure both boinc and your username are members of the same group

what version of boinc are you running? unless you are doing cuda processing on more than one cuda device make sure you are running the latest code at least version 6.6.37. even then i have found that with doing multiple device cuda, 6.6.11 is what needs to be used but use the 6.6.37 boincmgr gui since the one in 6.6.11 is broken (at least on my system it doesn't sort columns).

[john@slave1 boinc]$ rpm -qa | grep boinc
boinc-client-6.6.37-2.r18632svn.fc11.x86_64
boinc-manager-6.6.37-2.r18632svn.fc11.x86_64

Oh, and I assure you that my network is fine... I'm writing this on the very machine I'm trying to run BOINC on... And I execute boincmgr with sudo permissions already. I'm well aware of the restrictions on running it as a user. I had that problem when I rebuilt my system last (Fedora 10)

Well, that's interesting... NOW it decides to work... This incarnation of my machine has been a real headache... trying to get SSH access working and BOINC not cooperating and having to install the VNC server package... Sheesh... I don't know what I've done to pi$$ off the $deity of luck, but I seem to have done so!

Oh, well... it's working now! Thanks!

Well, I can run it in a console window, but for some reason I can *not* get the GUI to work. :-( Any ideas? It just says "disconnected" and won't connect to anything! This is SOOO aggravating!

change into your boinc data directory where all the .xml files will be kept (on my system that is /var/lib/boinc but i am not running redhat so it may be different with yours).

from cmdline just type:

boinc --attach_project <project URL> <project password>

*sigh* Why does everything in linux have to be 10 times as hard? Why won't the GUI just work? This is really freakin' annoying! Thanks! I followed your instructions above and it appears to be working!
7) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Help... rebuilt my computer and now can't run BOINC/SETI (Message 925189)
Posted 1848 days ago by Profile MrMaxx
Hello, all...
I'm not new to BOINC, Seti@Home, or linux. However, my computer died (F11) and I had to replace most of the guts as well as reinstall Fedora 11. Now, when I go to run Seti@Home/BOINC, it won't let me do anything. If I run it from the command line it tells me I need to connect to a project, but I don't know how to do that from a command-line and the GUI won't let me do anything!
Can someone please advise how to set this up? As I said, I was running BOINC/SETI before the crash, but now it's not working. :-(
8) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Must run as "root"???? (Message 877154)
Posted 1993 days ago by Profile MrMaxx
Because I installed it using the RPM from Fedora. :-) It doesn't give you an option (that I saw) to run it in normal user space. I posted on a local linux user list and one of my buddies there pointed out that BOINC creates it's own user/group to run as and so I just added myself to the BOINC group and now it's all good. However, I think something like this ought to be a FAQ for people who are used to running BOINC from the tarball.

Suggestion would be: "For Fedora/RedHat Enterprise users -- BOINC runs as user 'boinc', group 'boinc.' To run Boinc manager, you must either log in as boinc or add your user to the 'boinc' group."
9) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Must run as "root"???? (Message 876841)
Posted 1994 days ago by Profile MrMaxx
I'm not sure if this is a RedHat/Fedora problem or not, but I've been struggling ever since I upgraded to Fedora 10 to get BOINC running again. I finally had a brainstorm this morning and tried running it with "superuser" priveleges and it worked.
This does not make sense... why should BOINC have to run as "root" or a SuperUser? Should it not be able to run as a normal user?
In case anyone else has this problem, I got around it by "sudo chmod +s boinc" and all the other boinc-related binaries in /usr/bin.
Can someone please advise WHY it was necessary to have elevated privileges to run this?
10) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Can't start boincmgr (Message 848981)
Posted 2067 days ago by Profile MrMaxx
Rather, it starts, but won't let me do anything. I just installed Fedora 10 x86_64 and followed the instructions to "yum install boinc..." Now I located boincmgr and started it, but on the command line it just gives me an error as follows:
connect: Connection refused
execvp(/oldhome/john/boinc, --redirectio, --launched_by_manager) failed with error 13!
connect: Operation now in progress

I'm running selinux in "permissive" mode. I've been running Boinc under my old install, Fedora Core 6, but decided it was high time I got a more modern install.
11) Questions and Answers : Windows : Computation error (Message 726058)

I had a similar problem today. Also I had a similar problem several days ago. I just restarted BOINC and it appeared to take off where it left off. Here's the section of my message log from today where the error popped up:
3/14/2008 9:54:13 AM|SETI@home|Reason: Unrecoverable error for result 02ap07aa.18840.18477.6.7.204_1 (The system cannot find the path specified. (0x3) - exit code 3 (0x3))

Here's the error from yesterday:
3/13/2008 3:41:46 PM|SETI@home|Reason: Unrecoverable error for result 13fe08ac.6464.12751.5.7.32_4 ( - exit code -6 (0xfffffffa))

Is this a problem with my system or am I getting some bad packets to crunch or what? I reported 3 work units today after I restarted BOINC. I did notice that I initially got an error trying to report that BOINC couldn't find an HTTP header.

Here's the message showing where I started the manual report and finished:
3/14/2008 10:08:36 AM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
3/14/2008 10:08:36 AM|SETI@home|Reporting 3 tasks
3/14/2008 10:08:40 AM|SETI@home|Scheduler request failed: HTTP file not found
3/14/2008 10:08:40 AM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
3/14/2008 10:08:40 AM|SETI@home|Reporting 3 tasks
3/14/2008 10:08:45 AM|SETI@home|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 601]

Anyone see anything "strange"??

WHY in the world did they remove the file>Hide option from the menu? That's plain silly! And to make things worse, they didn't even bother to TELL us that you can just click on the "x" to make it hide. I'm a PC Tech and I've ALWAYS been taught that the "x" shuts down the running app, not that it'll close and hide the app! That's VERY counter-intuitive!
Whoever thought of that idea needs to be taken out behind the woodshed and flogged!
13) Message boards : Number crunching : 5.2.2, File\\Hide where is it now? (Message 185435)
Posted 3224 days ago by Profile MrMaxx
By using the x button the Manager will be hidden and put in the systray.

Why the bloody blue blazes did they decide to take that option out of the file menu? It doesn't make sense... They really ought to publicize these sorts of changes if they're going to do that!
I vote we bring BACK the "file->Hide" menu option! I realize they're probably trying to keep the menu as "clean" as possible, but that's just silly!
14) Questions and Answers : Windows : Proper contact URL for SETI / Boinc? (Message 133436)

I just noticed that my Windows client is connecting to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu. I thought that was the old "Beta" project URL.... What's the URL I *should* be connecting to?
Thanks.
15) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC 4.43 doesn't download WUs. (Message 125586)
Posted 3361 days ago by Profile MrMaxx
BOINC doesn't appear to even be TRYING to download WUs for SETI. It will work on WUs downloaded previously for CPDN. I'm not sure it's successfully downloading WUs for CPDN as it appears that the only WUs for CPDN are old ones.... I've got some WUs from the 16th and that's the latest... Nothing for SETI, though, as best I can see... I've even tried resetting the project...

Can someone please give me some pointers? It *was* working fine with 4.19. I'm thinking maybe I need to go back to 4.19 until a new version comes out. I'm running Fedora Core 3, if it matters. Glibc is: glibc-2.3.5-0.fc3.1.
16) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : BOINC 4.43 on new machine - no work given! (Message 124943)
Posted 3362 days ago by Profile MrMaxx

Well, I'm not able to get any work units from CPDN, but then again they appear to be on an older version of BOINC. Don't know if it's compatible or not. I *do* appear to be able to download WUs for SETI.

Well, scratch that. I do NOT seem to be able to get WUs from either right now. I was able to copy uncompleted WUs from CPDN to the new version's project directory and it's happily crunching those, but I can't get any SETI work units, despite resetting the project yesterday and again today.

On the other hand, in the "project" directory for S@H, there appear to be quite a number of WUs. But, they aren't showing up in the BOINC Manager. Can someone explain what's going on and why I don't seem to be getting any WUs?

There is a problem with the servers. It's not possible to upload or download work
see projects status
Wait and see...

But now everything looks to be on-line and working, but I still get:
(snip)

And all my new project machines are useless..
Maybe it's my fault somehow?

Is the current version of BOINC compatible with CPDN? I noticed that they are still using BOINC 4.19. I'm getting "NO Work" from the CPDN servers since I upgraded to the latest version for SETI last night.
Thanks

One additional problem at the Q&A forum: when posting an answer, the answer is posted without problems but on
top of the thread a windows opens right after posting the answer to make a reply on the thread. In addition,
above the thread following appears
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started
at /disks/koloth/a/inet_services/boinc_www/share/projects/sah/html/inc/util.inc:103)
in /disks/koloth/a/inet_services/boinc_www/share/projects/sah/html/user/forum_reply.php on line 89

Also, the post that has been posted can not be edited right away. The thread must be closed and then
opened again in order to edit your own post.

One other remark: the rating symbol on the posts in the message boards can not be seen,
although they are present when placing the mouse at their location.

For info: using break tags in this post.

I am also seeing this particular behavior. I'm using Netscape 7.2 on Windows 2000 Pro here.
