1) Message boards : SETI@home Science : Co-ordination with Kepler planet finder (Message 1179072)

I think searching should be co-ordinated with the Kepler planet finder results. So as soon as Earth like planets are discovered, we should immediatly search that area of space for radio transmissions. Results of new planets found aroung other stars are prolific enough now that this would end a lot of wasted number crunching for not knowing where to look.

I think this would also increase our odds of finding 'ET's phone number' in the lifetimes of those contributing to this project now.

(Just a suggestion)

2 to 32nd power? (For results)

I'm not a scientist, but wouldn't 2 billion results be 2 to the 9th power? 2 + 9 zero's after it.

(Typo I think!)

Have you by any chance installed "Threadmaster". The same happened to me until I uninstalled it.

no-I do not have any program installed on my computer called "threadmaster"
Computation time has resumed to normal today but now the program shows
100% complete and is still running and doing computations??

I was really beginning to think the latest version of Boinc was finally beginning to work. It has worked flawlessly for 2 weeks- I can upload/ download, I get credit, the program doesn't interfere with background sounds on other programs- Great!

But now-- The computation speed has slowed down to the point that the screensaver shows computation time of .50 seconds for every 5 minutes the screensaver is on! That is to say every ten minutes my system runs this program only one second of computations is done.

Any suggestions from anyone?

Thank you

I'm confused because the web site says you have WU 15au03aa.6585.31554.261062.30_0 and only that WU, but the messages you post show WU 30ja04aa.13768.3905.648582.244_0_0. Do you see WU 15au03aa.6585.31554.261062.30_0 in BOINC's "Work" tab? Is BOINC currently crunching that WU?

Did you merge computers or detach and re-attach to SETI?

Try a re-boot if you haven't already. Shut everything down, including the modem.

Did you had a previous version of BOINC installed and running 8 months ago before you went back to classic? Did you un-install your previous BOINC version before you installed BOINC 4.45? Could WU 30ja04aa.13768.3905.648582.244_0_0 be left over from 8 months ago? If it is a left-over WU from 8 months ago you may just have to abort it.

***I was one of the first users of classic seti to switch over to Boinc when it started up. The 30ja04aa.13768.3905.648582.244_0_0 was from that orginal Boinc version. It recently disappeared. I don't know if this means it aborted or whether or not it was successful at uploading to the server?? I couldn't get any more work from seti at home so I signed up to climatepredictor to get some work in the meanwhile. This baffles me as well- it download 53MB of work from their server but only 1 11MB work unit is showing under the work tab?? I think I'll reinstall seti classic till they can fix these bugs in Boinc and stay with seti classic till the classic project finally ends.****

Post:
I strongly urge all classic SETI users who are frustrated behond belief with the new Boinc seti program to sign on to this petition to tar and feather the Boinc programmers. Once we have enough names and addresses we can locate a participant who lives near the Berkley campus and provide him/ her with the money to purchase the tar and feathers and initiate this plan.

If nothing else this petition should serve as a wake up call to the Boinc programming staff.

All concerned SETI users please sign on below!

Thank you!

The WUs aren't that big. What you probably downloaded was the new version of the SETI application itself.

You were probably getting the backoff message because the database was being backed up, it's now back online.

Post all the messages you got for a better answer.

After switching back to SETI classic for eight months-I have downloaded the most recent version of Boinc and I have been running it actively.

However the Boinc system sent me a 11.50M file to compute. It is now 100% complete but it will not upload to the server. (I imagine because of its size and my slow modem speed)

I get messages like "backing off for 2 hours 33 minutes" ect. Well I'm not going to be on the internet forever (it ties up my phone line) and when I press retry now I forever get the same message about the system backing off.

If the system can't upload large files from a 56K modem- it shouldn't issue large files to a 56K modem in the first place. Now I am stuck with this completed workunit forever and it will never upload completely!!!

Any advise? (other than high speed internet -which I can't afford?)

Thanks!
10) Questions and Answers : Windows : Sounds skip on other programs, caused by boinc (Message 74938)

Post:
I recently upgraded to version 4.05 from 3.20 and I was happy that this program was finally working. But now it seems Boinc running in the background causes the sounds on my other programs (such as video games and windows media player to skip).

Regretfully I will have to uninstall this version of Boinc as well if this problem cannot be resolved. I will reload the original SETI at home program if Boinc still remains unusable due to system conflicts!

I've had nothing but problems with boinc it must be aware because it uninstalled itself from my computer??

Recently I had a problem with the graphics settings on my computer & I did a system restore in safe mode- after that Boinc was gone? I don't want to download another account- if that's even possible after i've registered??

Boinc has to be the worst software I've ever used. My old 64K atari worked better. pls help.

Thanks!

12) Questions and Answers : Windows : Are programmers addressing our concerns??? (Message 10087)

I've been patient- I really wanted this new program to work- but it doesn't. Now after 2 weeks & 3 posts on this help page Boinc does nothing- it won't download work units, it won't calculate, it doesn't function as a screensaver.

To be quite honest I don't have a clue about the preferences I was told to select or how much memory or systems capabilites I should allow for this program? Why are there no default settings? Fire the undergrad programmer & pay some money for a real programmer. I am a paying member of the Planetary Society funding this project- I'm all for progress & improvement.

I still have the old SETI monitor on disk- I can download up to 999 work units on the classic version- this will last my computer for about 4 years- but when is the shut down comming? Why all the cloak & dagger of secrecy about SETI plans??

Do BOINC or SETI at home programmers even bother to read the help desk page?

After a week of trying I finally got this user "unfriendly" program to run. It did its computations & shows 100% complete. There is no "connect now" feature like the old SETI at home screensaver had? Also it will not autoconnect. When I'm connected to the internet- it does not detect this? Its at 100% forever & will never send the result to the SETI server. I get errors like "Deferring communication with project for 4 days 29hours 52 minutes".

What was a major and unprecedent accomplishment with the distributed computer network- has become a disaster with this new program. There must be hundreds of complaints on file on this site. On the old SETI at home program the user didn't have to be some "nerd" like geek to operate the software properly.

Lets hope the aliens out there are having better luck trying to detect us than we are at detecting them!

I finally got the graphics on this going, however when I maximize the window the computation time slows down. Its almost like my computer doesn't have the capacity to draw the full screen version of the graphics & still do the math for the SETI at home project?

While I was trying to solve this problem I used the suspend feature under the file pull down menu. Now the program is suspended & their is no unsuspend option!!! There seems to be no way I can restart this program.

I'm just going to continue to use the old SETI at home program untill the mirad of bugs on this new program are worked out- it's a mess.
17) Questions and Answers : Windows : No screensaver available (Message 6741)

Post:
Hi! I just downloaded BOINC today & installed it on my computer. Everything went fine untill I realized there is no screensaver! I get a window of a white page showing the application's name & progress time. It does not appear to have a tab or setting to activate the screensaver (unless this blank white screen window is the new screensaver?).

I must say I preferred the trendy little taskbar green satelite dish over the new "B" cueball one.

As well with SETI monitor I still have 3 uncompleted work units on file. I feel hesitant to uninstall SETI at home & SETI monitor with these 3 units still uncompleted. It would be just my bad luck that one of these 3 uncompleted units would have a "WOW" type signal in it & if I delete them it would be lost forever.

Please advise how I should proceed?

Thank you!
