The most important function of the CPU scheduler is to meet deadlines - even if that means temporarily ignoring all other settings about how to divide the resources of the computer.

If you only have 1 core allocated (in preferences), then the deadline should be met. That is what you have allocated…1 core (if this was possible today). The deadline would be based on knowing your only going to use 1 core, therefore it would not download work that 2,4, or 8 cores would need to process.

What could be more difficult than resource share. I see people that post on these boards all the time that are confused. If it was all based on 100% it might not be that bad. But when you can say 500% for project "A" and 50% for project "B" and 8% for project "C" it all can get difficult for the average person that is not a daily participant. How would you know that you can go above 100% in resource share if you where not a regular reader of these boards?

I know why yer against my suggestion Ozz…….I get PM’s from people too.

Deadline has nothing to do with it, in what I’m talking about John.

It can, and would be very simple to implement a per core, per project CPU allocation, and I KNOW it will be implemented in the future with the increase in the number of cores a computer has.

I’ll give you an example: I don’t want to run Astropulse right now, cause I know my computer will download 20 of them and I’ll be drowning in them for 1 - 2 weeks.

If I could allocate 1 core for Astropulse and 3 for SETI I might do it.

Let ME select how my computer HELPS the cause of various projects…1 core at a time or 8.

I hear what your saying Ned…

I’m just say’n….If I have 8 cores on a computer and want to run 1 core on 8 projects, I should be able to.

**((Only thing that may not make this possible is if for some reason this may be harmful to your computer))**

I’m willing to bet this will be implemented in the future….and the future is NOW.

It would be nice if you could allocate the number of CPU’s to use for each individual project and each computer you have.

I don’t like it when I’m “only” running my secondary projects if I have work available in my primary project.

Like if you have a quad you could say in “preferences” only use 1 CPU on Einstein and 3 on Seti or 2 Seti, 1 Einstein, 1 Rosetta. A person may also want to run many projects and see results from each of these projects on a daily basis and allocate 1 core to each project. The way it is now you change the number of CPU’s used in 1 project, it changes in all projects.

The number of cores in a computer keeps going up every year. It might be time for a change in the way you can allocate your CPU usage throughout projects.

SETI is a very cool project to be participating in…no doubt!

MikeO, if you where here back in 01, you should remember all the stats SETI had. The list was long and the excitement great.

The feeling was (to me and many others) “I crunched a WU that might be a potential candidate“…wow. A potential candidate for those not around (back then) was something that turned up in the WU you returned, and it might be ET.

Now just silence. No stats from SETI.

Please donate and keep crunching is the SETI motto now.

I read a while back that SETI wanted to hire a new guy and it would cost about 50K a year…WHY?

Berkeley is a college. Want some help and short of funds, offer 4 credits (that’s 4 college credits) to people who will do the work for free!

Here are only a couple course objectives that could be considered:

1. Create a stat table that show potential signal candidates for WU’s returned by participants.

Want someone to come in on weekends and stay over night in case things break down? Here is another course objective:

2. Monitor activity nightly for potential contact while developing a Version 15.0 BOINC application.

I’m just throwing out a couple here but the possibilities are endless. (I’ve mentioned many before)

3. Here are 2 for MikeO:
A. Create colors that enhance and attract new participants to SETI.
B. Create sky charts showing………

If anyone thinks these course objectives are in any way laughable and not college type courses, pick up a State College course list in your area.

Here is one course Berkeley is offering: “The Found Object”. The objective of this course is: “Explore the possibilities of making art from used, discarded, discovered, demolished and recovered objects and material“. Heck, I just threw some mashed potatoes on a flier from WalMart that was in my trash- can…looks like an “A” to me!

Giving people ONLY credits, (which symbolize nothing scientific), in a Science Based Project is probably the main reason people are leaving, in my brilliant opinion.

We are really sorry but this had popped up in the midst of a whole mess of other things

The other things may be what I eluded to in my earlier post, there was a problem:

In late March, a scant few months before the much anticipated Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was slated to go online, a small but crucial part of the machine broke with a bang.

The accident happened as a team was testing a set of magnets that will steer protons—tiny positively charged particles found in every atom's nucleus—around the accelerator to nearly the speed of light.

When the pressure inside got high, it snapped supports holding the magnets, and gas burst out of the tube, stirring up a cloud of dust. No one was hurt, ,BUT THE DRAMATIC FAILURE REVEALED A DESIGN FLAW IN THE MASSIVE MACHINE.

We now intend to make the tests, which will allow the technicians to drive the machine, in late April or early May [next year 2009] and then hopefully go into full startup as planned by next summer. Scientists are thankful that they caught the problem before the machine actually powered up.

A spokesperson was heard to say that overclocked/unstable computers returning bad information at LHC@home may have contributed to the faulty design flaw.

Hold on: That last sentence wasn't really in the article...was it?

There is a very large spread/article, on LHC, in this months “National Geographic” magazine. Some really good pictures.

I don’t know much about the Boinc LHC.

You may know some magnets went bang recently at the project! Something about a metal hairpin flying off a female scientists head as they powered up for a test…I think.

How long will it be until you reach him? (or at least where he is now)

Nez = 350,392,394 Total Credit

I should be there on December 4th in the year 2162

That’s only: 56,429.37 days.

I’ll be retired by then.

WTF do I want these for? WUs with a deadline in November and December? It's early October! So I'll just carry on aborting anything more than 10 days off...

WTF would you rather have NO work?

I will agree the deadlines are a bit long, maybe there is a reason for this that I am not aware of?

Here is 1 example of a WU that may take 6+ Months to complete the quorum.

WU: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=147070191 , issued on August 13th to me and fellow cruncher. My 1st partner did not return the WU by October 4th so it has been reissued to another cruncher. It looks as though my 2nd partner is not returning WU’s either. November 27th is his deadline. If this WU is reissued to 3rd person and they actually complete and return it, could be 5-6 Months. If they don’t, could be longer…maybe 8+ months? At some point there are going to be freak occurrences where someone could go a year (maybe even longer) before a WU’s quorum is met with these long deadlines.

WTF, aborting WU’s with a deadline of 10 days or less. Right now the earliest deadline in my entire cache of 130 WU’s is October 30th. WTF, should I follow your lead and abort them all?

Are you quite certain it was speaking of RAM and not DISK SPACE. The message you are quoting appears about DISK SPACE, but not RAM. It usually means that you have to change your disk spece settings.

Absolutely POSITIVE.

1.If you think I’m wrong for some reason, ask a Real developer if this message is capable of going out.

2.Turn back your settings on Disk and Memory setting and see if you can recreate this phenomenon.

The message said: you need to add 525MB of RaM. I could not download new WU’s until I fiddled/diddled/doodled with my preferences. Look at my results. There where several client errors on download because of this. The WU’s where hung up. I aborted 6 WU’s or so, thinking somehow those WU’s where the cause. It was Neet.

Preference change, changed the challenge of getting the challenging WU’s to Chunnel down the challenging pipeline in a chorographic manner that all SETI collaborators expect considering the contemporary new approach to successively completing the charge, that we have been assured would solidify our continued success in this project.

Fair to Middling?

When I watch my workunits,I found one unit shows 'Waiting for memory' while other units run well.

I HAVE adjusted 'memory usage' and it doesn't help.

What's wrong?Is the unit corrupted?

I had a similar message about 2 weeks ago, Firstrose. We have the same computer: Intel (R) Celeron (R). Don’t know if that is a coincidence?

My message in red said: you need to add 525mb of Ram. And It would not let me download work.

I had not changed preferences in about 6 months or made any changes to that computer, so it seemed strange.

Short version to what solved the problem:

In preferences, under “Disk and Memory Usage”. I increased the “Use at Most” amount to 20 GB and decreased the “Leave at Least (Free)” amount down to 5 GB.

That fixed it. Guess you could play with the numbers if the ones I used, don’t work for you.

Out of curiosity, how much RAM was installed when you got the message that you needed to add 525Mb more?

That series of messages is about Hard Disk Space, not RAM.

The message waiting for RAM means that the total of the working sets for the running tasks exceeds the amount of RAM that the user has specified as being available. Adding more physical RAM, or increasing the % of RAM that can be used are the cures for this problem.

Maybe fristrose and my problems where different, dunt know?

My message (in RED) did say I had to ((ADD)) 525 MB of RAM or Memory (don’t remember the exact phrase or sentence). My message did NOT say ((waiting for RaM)). To me that message meant (and it may to others if they saw it, especially someone new) I need to purchase more RaM if I want to crunch away.

I knew I had been running things exactly the same for many months (6 or more months). NOT 1 thing had changed with me. I had never seen or heard of a question pertaining to this. I went to my preferences and played a bit under “Disk and Memory Usage” until WU’s started downloading. This particular computer only has 375 MB of Ram. The 525 MB that the message said to add, would make it an even 1,000, if that lends a clue to something?

I wasn’t about to purchase new RaM for this computer. There might be some out their who might make the purchase if they are not familiar with little nuances within Boinc and SETI, and how preferences can make a difference. It worked for me!

Maybe my RoM was kick’n my RaM? oooch

Has anyone purchased stock in Crucial lately?

PS> I'm up to 125,472 connects...BEAT THAT STAT (for a once a day or less connect interval)

How can I hide the tray icon when Boinc is running?

On XP/Vista open task manager by: Right click on task bar/click on boincmgr.exe (highlighting it)/hit end process/drag mouse pointer across boinc icon in taskbar…..poof, icon gone…boinc still runs.

You can also hide icons by: Right click on start button/click properties/click taskbar tab/go down to ‘hide inactive icons’/check the box/click customize/find boinc in the list and change to ‘always hide’/hit apply on your way out.

Don’t do anything to boinc.exe

If 98 is same as ME, hit control/alt/delete keys/click on boincmgr.exe/end process/sweep mouse over icon.

Icon will reappear every time you turn off computer and restart.
