41) Message boards : Number crunching : I tricked seti to give me work. (Message 1005312)
Posted 1073 days ago by Profile Francesco Forti
I just managed to get some WUs by sitting back and doing nothing for the last few hours.

I too. In m ost of the hosts this is working.
In this one (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1852935) I have received 14 tasks in the last 24 hours (and more) but the log is telling me that I have received my quota (104).
Or that there is no job from the project.
In this window: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/host_app_versions.php?hostid=1852935 I see "Number of tasks today" but if it means "Number of tasks sent today" it is wrong.
I hope that tomorrow I receive some task.
As told here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=60388
on this Host I have a lot of lost results (results sent and reported but Berkeley doesn't knows it) so I think that the sistem is waiting for them, before sending me new job.
Isn't it?
I don't want to trick but SETI shouldn't loose work.

The quota thing, also looks promising. Over time it looks as if it is going to reward those that takes care of their WU's, and punishing those who deliberately abort them, or constantly turns in WU's that error out for one reason or another.

I agree that it looks promising, but I can't help feeling that the GPU crunchers are going to get hit when they generate -12 errors (something that can't be avoided).

Even the autokill function should't penalize us.
Because now SETI knows the application we use (CPU or GPU) and must be able not to send VLAR to GPU. So we have not to kill them.
Who can agree?

Same for host http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1852935

In this moment I have no job to do in this host.
Alla my cache is empty.
Only 3 hours of job during last 24 hours.
But if I look at "In progress Tasks: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=1852935&offset=0&show_names=0&state=1
I see 228 (!!) tasks from 4 to 13 Jun 2010.
I have already uploaded and reported them.

I have an Host here computer 5381180 with 930 CPU and 260 Nvidia GPU.
It's a new host (22 Apr 2010 11:16:10 UTC) and recently was out of work, for the problems of these days.
Now is getting work again but I have seen that in the "In Progress Task" list I have a lot (about 40) of result, crunched, uploaded and reported, that are still "in progress". So it is as SETI didn't received my work. All received in the date 25 May 2010 12:12:06 UTC

One is http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=616463467

I repeat: I am absolutely sure that the task was sent and reported to berkeley.

If it's not only a problem of mine, I understand the growing pending.

Franz

More info: in that host I use optimized apps and reschedule

Here (CH) ... (by the way "Great Swiss performance aganist Spain ... Hop Swiss!!")
I see upload OK and DL also working in same host without any task to do.

But I see that in the host without job (as 1852935) I have a lot of tasks "in progress". This is not correct. In that host I have uploaded and sent all results.
I see that the replica db is "running" and so this shouldn't be an error from it.

What's the matter, again?

46) Message boards : Number crunching : Message from server: (reached daily quota of 100 tasks) (Message 1004540)
Posted 1074 days ago by Profile Francesco Forti
The quota code has changed dramatically.

There is a separate quota per application version, and for good computers that consistently return valid work, there is no cap on the quota as it is incremented by one at validation. However, errored or late tasks drop the quota to min(current quota, app specified quota) - 1, and invalid tasks drop the quota by 1 from where it is. In other words if you have a daily quota of 1000 and your machine generates an error, your quota for that app will be 99. If it is currently 50 and you generate an error it will be 49. If it is 100,000 and you have yet another validation success, it will be 100,001.

This way machines that never return an error eventually can get all the tasks they want.

Thanks for the info.
I ask what happens
1) if a task is killed by autokill
2) if a task sent to the CPU is rescheduled to GPU (or viceversa) by reschedule

Sometimes I have a wrong app_info.xml, sometimes there is no job for me.
I see that in the server status page SETI has "Results ready to send 324,302" and I see traffic in the newcricket/grapher so I think that SETI is not sending work to the optimized apps.
Am I wrong?

Hi Francesco,
Are you referring to 0.36 installer(newer) versus 0.35 installer(older) ?

0.36 (newer) versus Lunatics_Win32v0.2_AP505r168_AKv8b_CudaV12.exe (older)

Usually it just indicates something was keeping BOINC from updating the heartbeat it sends to the science app, and "repeatedly" should be only a concern if it happens more than once an hour or so. The advice to reset the project and thereby trash all work and applications should be only considered as a last resort which might possibly fix a case caused by a corrupted app or set of WUs.

Each instance does cost crunch time since the last checkpoint plus time to do a restart, and there could have been some more time lost before BOINC was able to see that the app exited. So if it's happening more than a few times a day it would make sense to try to figure out what's interfering with BOINC and take steps to fix it.
Joe

On both hosts (one near the other) two days ago I have installed the newer Lunatics optimized application. One host (the quad core one) was without work but when the tasks arrived in the evening I have see this problem. I have seen that also in the other host (the 930 CPU) the same error, e lot of time in one hour.
So after having written my message, I have reinstalled the previous version of Lunatics. Non more problem in the last 12 hours. I have also seen a lot of problem, in both computer, in LAN communication. Also this problem is now solved.

New errors:

13.06.2010 20:49:03 SETI@home Task 23mr10ad.3506.14965.13.10.241_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
13.06.2010 20:49:03 SETI@home If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

It's not really new (I've seen it a lot of months ago) but in two hosts of mine I see it now.

Hosts are

Posted 1078 days ago by Profile Francesco Forti
So I revert to the previuos Lunatic app.
The message about app_info disappered but I'm still without job (Message from server: Project has no jobs available)

I must correct myself.
The message apears (after a while) on the older lunatic app too.
But not in all host. It is random.

I will follow the other threads to understand why

Posted 1078 days ago by Profile Francesco Forti
It was http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1852935

Sorry, I say "it was" because before reading your post I have seen that there is a new lunatic's version so I have installed it.
I was using Lunatics_Win32v0.2_AP505r168_AKv8b_CudaV12 and now I have installed Lunatics_Win32v0.36_AP505r409_AKv8b_Cuda

When I have restard BOINC ... I haver lost all 528 and got this message: Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of SETI@home Enhanced

No work for CPU and no work for GPU: Message from server: (reached daily quota of 100 tasks)

So I revert to the previuos Lunatic app.
The message about app_info disappered but I'm still without job (Message from server: Project has no jobs available)

All other Hosts use 603 and 608 and I can run task and reschedule without problems. I get the 100 tasks message but I have a 8 days cache. So I can crunch for days.

Reschedule works fine with 6.03 (CPU) and 6.08 (GPU) but can't handle 5.28
In one Host I have them and I have recently installed a CUDA device.
If I run Reschedule, I see 0 CPU task, even if I have more than 500.
How can get 603 instead of 528 without loosing cache?

Yeah, I forgot about all those "This looks interesting, I think I install this" types.

Not only. There are a lot af partecipants leaving the project, week after week.

http://www.teamocuk.co.uk/cprojectpart2.php?p=SAH

Global RAC is not growing and leaving of partecipants grows in the same days of tecnical problems.
http://www.teamocuk.co.uk/cprojectcred2.php?p=SAH

But it's very strange that the same workunit meets 3 times users leaving the project.

Here is my oldest "pending".

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=550560883

As you can see, it is a GPU task.
I have completed it the same day (2 Jan 2010)
Other cruncers give 1 Error while computing and 2 Timed out - no response
An other one in in progress, since 18 april and I suppose a new Time Out in 3 days.

Same story for second oldest
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=551136063

I think that the problem can be investigated starting from the situation of the other cruncher in the same workunit.

By the way: I see
Results returned and awaiting validation 6,043,837
Results out in the field 6,284,723

Update:
Results out in the field 6,086,264
Results returned and awaiting validation 6,824,424
---
So ... Out in the field now are less (now 6,086,264 was 6,284,723)
and Returned and waiting are more (now 6,824,424 was 6,043,837)

My "production" (let us call it so) is alwasy the same but pending is growing.

When a reissue is created it goes at the end of the "Results ready to send" queue, so for this project under normal conditions is sent out within a few hours.

Ok, I have seen now that you are right.
After 1 hour the task was reassigned to a new user.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=610657396

Mostly because the wingmate's result has not yet been received. That's the total "pending", some may be inconclusives too.

Ok, clear! But why it's so high? Weeks ago it wasn't so.
Francesco
