I would like to turn this discussion around towards a sollution.

I will transfer some money for this project and would like to ask the others also to do this!.

I know that allot off users just want to donate their CPU's and nothing extra.
Just keep in mind if all active users transfer only 1 dollar or euro to Seti, server issues incl. bandwidth are gone!.

For 150.000,- + Dollar all 53 servers can be replaced by kickass servers! and still leaves money left for data and hosting.

Is their a way Seti can help with the marketing on the site for a special "upgrade" donation?

I will transfer 10 euro's
Who's next :-)

Uhhhh, the drinks must be pretty expensive over their:

Donations to SETI@home Since 19 Jul 2008:
Number of Donations: 1403
Total Donations: $ 117786.24
Smallest Donation: $ 10.00
Largest Donation: $ 20000.00
Average Donation: $ 83.95
Median Donation: $ 30.00
Donation Rate (per day): $ 322.48
% of Volunteers that have Donated: 0.00%

They ask for spare CPU cycles, but they never promised they'd have work available 100% of the time. This project has had server issues since day 1. Its the nature of the beast with hand-me-down or beta hardware and little money to finance everything else.

Knowing that Seti is now running for 10 Years and that this project shows that within this period the stability of their servers and network did not increased stability makes me ask allot off questions.

It can not be true that a well known project as Seti isn't able to attract help from larger companies that can help with hardware and bandwidth. (Marketing)

The situation is far more complex then simply needing to barter with companies. There are certain rules and guidelines of the University of California @ Berkeley that need to be followed. There's a lot of red tape and bureaucracy that needs to happen before they can proceed with their plans.

They are already working on solutions to these problems, but due to the aforementioned red tape, it can sometimes take months before they can continue. In the meantime, people simply need to be patient.

It may be like a video game for you, but it is their life's work for them. They take it very seriously and they are doing the best they can.

I can understand that this project is really complex in terms off rules and bureaucracy. Just make sure that the fundament of this huge project is stable
and able to handle the responses that it gets.

Anyway; i guess my vision on this matter is over reacted and i would like to rest my case but making me think to stop helping Seti if these stability issues stay.

I thought Seti was a science project to find life other than ours and the credits were just a bi product of that project...

Science project or not, it is just crazy that you ask people to help with this project and invest power and time and not being able to keep servers online!

I guess that this project costs allot off money, witch is mostly subsidized and bartered.
Please take my advice and barter bandwidth and knowledge from a professional data-centre.

They ask for spare CPU cycles, not dedicated super cruncher farms.

Don't complain if you provide more than asked for.

Don't ask for help if you can not handle help or notify users that their is a limit on the number of machines you use for crunching.

Why the discussion; Just talk with the right people about possibilities of hosting the WU servers at a location that is able to handle the demand!

Nothing more..

Can someone please tell me why the *&%&^% i still can not upload and/or download new WU's. It's not my machines!.

The Scheduler is not responding, Uploading does not work and getting new WU's also not.

This is the second time within one week that 5x dual Core2Quad machines all idle.

Damn!

I know, i also saw that.
But even when the servers are ok (like now) i still get the messages that the scheduler is not responding.

It looks like the scheduler is down orso.
Even when i manual request an update it says:

7/18/2009 6:56:55 PM SETI@home update requested by user
7/18/2009 6:56:58 PM SETI@home Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
7/18/2009 6:56:58 PM SETI@home Requesting new tasks
7/18/2009 6:57:04 PM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
7/18/2009 6:57:05 PM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
7/18/2009 6:57:08 PM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer

Is it me, or is the scheduler down?

Now i see more channels available but my crunchers arent able to get new WU's.

7/18/2009 5:07:01 PM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer

It is online though, whats going on?

Are their maybe some data tapes left to crunch?.
All my crunchers are running low...

Best regards,

I would suggest that Seti contacts Pacific Internet Exchange:

Pacific Internet Exchange
200 Paul Ave. Ste. M-200
San Francisco, CA 94124

It's a 35 mins drive from Seti.
Arrange hosting and data at that location (could even be free) and put their name on the Seti site. Setup an VPN or VLAN between Seti and PIE and host the big data eating servers their. This way allot of the probs disappear.

They could even drive over to that data enter and bring project on a external HD for 150$ or so.

Off course i don't know the details about the seti system but this can not continue as it is now, for Seti and the Crunchers.

Just an idea.

A 5Ghz point to point Wifi link is able to create an +/- 40Mbit netto link.
Total costs for something like this is about 500 Euro in Holland.

The distance between 2 dishes can go up to 50 Kilometers (don't know miles) hehe

Maybe that's a quick, simple and CHEAP sollution.

Now that the server is back online, lets all upload at the same time :-)

I agree with you; Vipin

Would it help Seti if we (crunchers) provide rackspace and bandwidth in a datacenter nearby?
This way only Seti needs to send data between the main office and the servers in that datacenter!

Seti, what is your responce on this?

If simplex is the main issue on the connection, a possible (work around) solution could be to switch upload and download servers on-line and offline with a window of 24 hours or so.

This way the pipe is used only for one way traffic and all crunchers can download on day "1" and upload it all again on the next.
This way Seti buys them self’s time to work on servers, connections, etc without annoying anyone to much.

I understand that without sufficient funding this problem can not be solved.
But also understand that 150.000+ active users can not be left waiting.

Maybe it would be wise to think about a workaround before shutting down the system, without notifying SO MANY crunchers that invest power, hardware and time to help the search or even just do it for credits.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8_Kfjo3VjU :-)

Can someone reboot that server 3 times please, THE WEBSITE IS DOWN hehe

Maybe it is a idea to post a new thread where Seti keeps the 150K+ crunchers updated about the status of the upgrade.

Allot of crunchers run Set@Home because they want to help Seti in the search, but also allot of crunchers run Seti@Home because they want to gain position in the list and more or less only do it to gain credits.

By keeping the system offline for a long time, the interest fades.
So i think if you keep everybody updated with stats on when they can expect new WU's, the loss of active crunchers will be reduced.

Just an idea, good luck with the upgrade.

I have 10 E5420 CPU's waiting for WU's and about 50 WU's ready to be uploaded, the lists are getting realy long :-(
Please activate the upload server for a couple of hours.
