Other boinc projects seem to work OK. I got Cosmology with CAMB 2.16 going flawlessly, this might be a SETI issue. |

The real problem of the "merge computers by name" function is: That it doesn't merge computers by NAME at all. It attempts to find differences between the various detected clients. It won't even merge the same machine if it had merely a different OS. What is really irritating is when Boinc manager doesn't detect the hardware correctly (say my 2 Tesla units). And than happily create yet another client (with an identical name) in the database (due to a false detection of a mismatch in hardware). As if SETI was going to use these Tesla units under Linux any minute now. What was the criteria again ? "NAME" !!!!!! Dear programmers, When WE THE USERS (administrators) give a name to a computer, WE might do so with the INTENT of referring to that computer as the very same machine because IT MIGHT JUST HAPPEN TO BE THAT VERY SAME MACHINE ELSE WE (users/administrators) would have chosen A DIFFERENT NAME for that machine. I hope this argument is still simple enough to entice well meaning programmers to refrain from second guessing users/administrators. And I am looking forward to the rewrite of the "merge computers by NAME" function. |
