1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Sort not working (Message 802295)
Posted 26 Aug 2008 by Profile Stretchr
Post:
In at least the last two versions of BOINC, the column sort has not worked on my XP machine. I did a pretty thorough search and got no hits on this anywhere on the forums. Is this something so well known to everyone else that they no longer post about it or am I having a unique issue?

Cheers,

My work computer is only attached to Seti and I'm not getting any work units. Nooooooooooooo! I haven't had this since July of last year.

I'm out of WUs for 2 of my projects and can't seem to get any new ones. What's up?

Well, sure, it's obvious NOW!

4) Questions and Answers : Windows : 4.08 Sucks Just As Much As 4.03 (Message 23907)
Posted 9 Sep 2004 by Profile Stretchr
Post:
I'm not running 4.08 on my XP box but both of the W2K Adv. Server boxes have that client and it's the first client that isn't causing problems. In fact, it's the only client that I've been able to successfully run on those servers. Both are DC's in an AD domain but they're finally processing properly and not dropping out constantly.

As for whether it's SP2, are you getting any hints in the Event Logs as to the error? If SP2 permissions are the culprit, you may find something in the security logs. Otherwise an event in the Application log may give you some clue.

Also, in the BOINC directory, I found an error log (stderr.txt) and when I was having all of the problems with the previous clients, I found an exception being logged every time I tried to initialize the client. At least then I felt it was likely the client, not the O.S.

Good Luck,
Cheers,
Stretchr

FYI, I've put 4.08 on both of my W2K Adv.Server boxes and it's the first BOINC client that I am NOT having any problems with. Works like it should- like a charm.

Just installed 4.08 and keeping my fingers crossed but the client is up and running. In answer to your question, yes, it says that General Preferences were modified today, which is when I last tried to make any changes. Even so, the client defaulted to Run Based On Preferences. So maybe it is running always but the check mark doesn't move to the Run Always choice. I've been so wrapped up in just trying to get this to work I didn't think of that until now.

I did initially but I'm not sure about since the problems with the logo and profile picture began. Unfortunately, I'm also unable to keep the client running for more than a few seconds. Last time this happened, I had to reset the projects and lost all of my completed pending WU's. I'm trying BOINC now rinning as a service, so I'm not sure how to get a display of the messages when it's running that way.

Sorry, been there, done that. For me it did not make any difference. That's why I posted the question in the first place. Maybe this is a bug? It seems to me that it may be related to some of the other symptoms that are appearing like not being able to update profile photos or change URLs for logos.

I'm curious, I'm running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. What OS are you running that this feature is working for you?

9) Questions and Answers : Windows : [RANT] No-one Read or Search? (Message 23791)

Post:
Don't know about anyone else but I only today finally noticed the search function and that was just before I was about to create a post complaining that there wasn't one. For those of you that are familiar with these forums, maybe you knew about the search ability. I always enter through the link to Community from the main page and then went to Questions and Problems and straight to Windows. I never even noticed the search at the root of Questions and Problems. I'm hoping it's just because I didn't have my glasses on and not old age creeping up on me, but at any rate, it would be nice to have search available in each category, as well as at the root. Now that I've posted 5 different questions today that have undoubtedly already been answered elsewhere, I'll go take my Geritol and take a nap so I have the energy to do a search next time before making another redundant post. Argggg.

:-)

Stretchr

That's what I would have thought. Apparently that's not it because I have it set to yes but I always have to manually tick the choice in the system tray icon.

Thanks. I'm running Windows 2000 Advanced Server but I'm having all sorts of problems, which I've posted, so I thought I'd give 4.07 a try. At this point, I haven't much to lose since I keep having to reset my projects and losing all the WU's that haven't uploaded yet.

Thanks for the URL.

You have the option to tick Run Always if you right click on the system tray icon but is there a way to set this as the default somewhere?

I'm also getting a message that BOINC is unable to download the logo file and a long file name. It says the file is garbage but I've checked the URL and it displays perfectly fine. I've tried erasing the URL then adding it again but the same error message shows up again.

14) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC on Windows 2000 Advanced Server keeps shutting down (Message 23756)

Running v4.05
In the error log I see:

***UNHANDLED EXCEPTION****
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x00406F7B read attempt to address 0x00000208

I restart the client repeatedly and as soon as I mouse-over it in the system tray, it disappears and shuts down. Reinstalled the client and reset the project and I can get the program running but if I shut it down for any reason, that's it. This wastes a lot of my time and completed work units because they disappear when I reset the project.

I also notice that the shutdown occurs just after the message appears that says it's trying to download the logo file. As I note in another post, for some reason, this file is corrupt (in the cache?). Hope this info gives someone an idea that will help solve these problems.

Thanks.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but where is v4.07 that people are referring to? I've searched everywhere I can think of but can't find it. Also, is there any way to run BOINC as a Windows 2000 service if you do not have access to Visual Studio to compile the source?
Thank you.

Mine was set to run in a normal window so after reading your post, decided to try setting it to run maximized. At least now I get an error. If I can figure out how to post a jpeg here, I'll put up a screen shot.

I'm running BOINC on two Windows 2000 Advanced Servers and until recently have had no problems. Since downloading v4.05 I've noticed that the project will often have dropped out of the system tray and checking Task Manager, the process has just disappeared. Nothing in the Event Logs, either. Has anyone else seen this or have an idea what might be going wrong?

From the looks of things, they have bigger problems that the photos not showing up. My latest BOINC client keeps dying on one of the servers I'm running it on. Between that and not being able to get any work units, I suspect they have their hands full.
