1) Questions and Answers : Web site : You Guys Given Up Exporting Stats? (Message 1475777)

Various people are posting elsewhere that your XML stats are not being exported and haven't been since last week. I know my stats counter is showing the project as inactive.

Ah, thanks for the clarification...I was concerned, now I'm not ;-)

Judging from the "Server Status" page. This could cause anomalies with work units.

That's true. At the moment I have 1 day and nothing for the additional.

Well I partially answered my own question, one solitary work unit just downloaded. The question is will there be more to make it worth while?

Thanks, appreciate your help. I tried this before and for weeks got no work and was hoping to get a definitive answer from a SETI person.

Click 'Account' below then on that page Seti@home preferences and you can turn it off there. My question is still valid as several posts dotted around the message boards state since turning off GPU settings they haven't received any work at all.

I've dropped GPU work because of various issues and wondered if SETI now only does combined CPU/GPU work or can us 'old-fashioned' people still contribute?

Sorry I did search for answers and couldn't find any and BOINC website is hopeless at delineating between CPU and GPU projects.

So if I try this again in the future I may have to do a bit of research as to which of those in my signature actually have work that can use CPU only.

Or, as in the case of Seti, just select the CPU for work procesing & don't enable it for the GPU.

I'll consider that thanks.

I think my cache settings were more than ample and last time I tried that Seti, for one, didn't send any work for several months.
Do they actually ever have non-GPU projects now?

Yes, both apps in SETI (MB and AP) run on CPU or GPU. And the WUs are the same for CPU and GPU, they become a GPU or CPU task when assigned to the host.
Besides SETI I also crunch form Einstein and their main apps (the searches for gravitational waves) only run on CPU... they use GPU for pulsar findings.

So if I try this again in the future I may have to do a bit of research as to which of those in my signature actually have work that can use CPU only.

Perhaps two graphics cards are needed in order to get this working as it should be doing?

In the end you probably will use both cards for crunching if you have more than one such card installed in your system.

Yes that would be ideal and then I would have 4 cores to spread the work around, but unfortunately I have no more free slots to insert one. Don't forget modern graphics card are such behemoths that they invariably block 2 slots each in any case.

If you're so frustrated with GPU computing, why not just go with CPU computing instead? No need to throw in the towel when there's an alternative.

Tried that and ended up with very little work as most projects seem to want you to use a combo of CPU and GPU anyway.

Very sorry to see you go Ex_Brit, hope you will come back.

Chris

Thanks.

Well it's a shame I know, especially after all these years, but I've now ditched BOINC as I am just fed up with it's annoying failures and it's seeming inability, no matter what additional software is installed to help (e.g. TThrottle) or what config files are created, to rationally use GPU capacity without interfering with the normal use of the desktop in some way shape or form or fans roaring, or both. That's assuming the work would complete without errors in the first place, which was not confined to Seti alone by any means.
I never used to have all this turmoil until the last few months and I'm fed up with having to spend so much time trying to deal with it.
So goodbye Grid Computing, it's been nice knowing you!
Maybe I'll be back when I can afford a multi-GPU Tesla-equipped machine with 90gb+ memory...in other words never.

Doesn't the following config file do the same then?

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
</log_flags>
<options>
<ignore_cuda_dev>0</ignore_cuda_dev>
</options>
</cc_config>

That's the one I'm using at the moment on advice from Boinc support.

I've been getting the same and even turned off GPU WU fetch only to realise that I have hardly any hope of ever getting work from Seti using that setting so it's back on.

Well considering the highest version on the BOINC website is
7.0.31 Development version (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING)

we are in for a long haul here.

One would think Boinc could get it right after all these years.

I'd use that cc_config file except I don't want to use all GPU's as I then have to put up with a jerky desktop. So I guess I'm doomed for the near future.

I got several CE's in a row and subsequently ditched all the rest.

Hmm, that's interesting. I use TThrottle to throttle back both the GPU and CPU should certain temperatures be exceeded. Do you think that might be something nto do with that?

The basic math of the elapsed time cutoff is 10x the estimated runtime. I doubt TThrottle is reducing processing rate that much unless you have a serious overheating problem. There are hints in the stderr details that those tasks were only about 1/3 done when they were killed, too. If that's right the tasks were slowed by a factor around 30x.
                                                                    Joe

Thanks - I'll keep an eye on it. So far so good since then.
