1) Message boards : Number crunching : Panic Mode On (86) Server Problems? (Message 1481772)
Posted 51 days ago by Profile RottenMutt
I have been checking my AP work that finally got validated today because somebody finally returned their work. It's easy to see who has been hoarding work as ALL AP work should have been returned by now from a 200 work unit limit. Any outstanding AP work has been hoarded by using various techniques discussed here. Some 56K AP work still out in the field as of now....

i blame the 56k on the slow suns of a female dog! any computer in the top 500 rigs should be excluded from the limits as they stand.

life may be returning!
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Rescheduling - final attempt (Message 1480695)
Posted 54 days ago by Profile RottenMutt
no rescheduler, just re program boinc to be gpu/cpu neutral and fix the credit system so that a cpu don't get ripped off when matched to a gpu.

while your at it, remove the percent for "on muliprocessor systems, use at most xx% of the processors" and let me specify the number of cores i want free. some systems have 64 processors and some have 2, if i put in my preferences 50 percent to have one core free on the two cpu rig, that don't work to well on the 64 core rig.

i like the days of seti classic and that setispy (or what ever it was called) that would setup a server and cache your work units and distribute to all your clients.

I removed "max_concurrent" and that fixed it, thank you Fred E.

if i'm running AP on GPU and attempting to run AP on CPU i can't fill up my CPU as two cores remain idle. my system is set to use a full CPU core per AP GPU work unit. so on a three GTX 680 rig i can only run six AP work units, six on my gpu and none on my CPU. if i have MB work for my CPU then it will run two work units on the remaining cores, but will not run available AP work for the CPU. on a two GTX 480 rig, i run four GPU AP work units and two AP CPU work units, and if available two CPU MB work units.

here is my app_config.xml file:
<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
<max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.50</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

</app_config>

what is the best way to block cpu work?

jason, i'm not say most efficiently, just download the work let the client assign to gpu or cpu. like you could do with boinc reschedule...

Posted 67 days ago by Profile RottenMutt
Since there are gpu apps for everything, why does bonic request work for cpu and gpu individually amymor? let the client distribute the work as needed.

I have a old rig with four logical cpu's and two gpu's, when crunching astropulse no cpu work is done because each AP work unit needs a whole CPU thread. I end up having to abort cpu work to keep the gpu's working, the cpu work eventually starts to go critical and the gpu's will sit idle.

Aparently this will be going to be a long sunday. Stop here too.

But not panic, we have enought WU in our caches for about 3 hrs!!! Some help Please!

BTW Stll hate the 100GPU WU limit!.

yep.

my boinc log are to big which makes the manager take a while connecting to the client. any settings i can make which will make boinc behave BETTER?

there are a bunch that are ~18MB, to big...

It sure won't affect us in the long term.

Lots and lots of government folks can't afford to have us figure-out that we really don't need them.

I've lived through a lot of these. My advice is not to hold your breath waiting to find-out what difference it made. In the end, it makes none.

I don't know about you guys, but why don't we go sail a ship around Antarctica, i'm sure there is no ice to worry about...

it even ignored my computing preference, i had don't exceed 87.5 % of the processors; and it went ahead and used them all.

i've suspended the work units until the behavior stopped, and am resuming a few every hour or so.

my guess it is a bonic issue, nothing wrong with the drivers. but don't worry as there are no opencl apps for nvidia cards i believe.

And how do you think that AP's are done on those cards?

Cheers.

I was thinking cuda, guess not...

so why can't i get any work for intel 4600 graphics on a 4770k chip?

And we have a bit of AP on the barbi for Christmas!

I put my hand out and for the first time i didn't get hand full of crap:D

How do you specify if you only want astropulse on the gpu's? I could edit out the MB apps from the app_info.xml file. then i should only request astopulse for the gpu's...

create an app_config.xml file in your C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu directory like this:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
<max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.50</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

</app_config>

Then you will not have use computing preferences. the app_config.xml file overrides the settings in app_info.xml so when you upgrade lunatic's apps you don't need to edit this stuff all over again, and it is smaller.

If Im reading this right, This will run 2 AP's on a GPU? Im only asking because Im not sure My GTX 550 Ti's are up to running two AP at once. My setting at the moment are for one MB and one AP to run on my Cards.

Please bear with me on some of my questions as Im am just learning the app_congig.xml tweaking.

Yes, if you put 1 for gpu_usage you will run one, .5 will run two, and .33 will run three and so on. If you put 1 for cpu_usage it will spar a cpu to run the astro gpu app. Just like someone is doing manually with his compute preferences, and then when astropulse is done his cpu cores he reserved sit idle...
Pay attention to the section names... edit any "bold" forum "/b" text if it appears.

you can set <cpu_usage> for astropulse on the gpu's to what ever you want (perhaps 2.0 would suit you), it is a leave it forget it setting. no manual adjusting like you are doing. unless i don't understand you.

.......
I have all rigs configured to maximize AP production.
That means disabling CPU cores to feed the GPUs when AP can be had.
The only problem with that is that when AP is gone, I am running idle cores.
....

create an app_config.xml file in your C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu directory like this:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
<max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

<app>
<name>astropulse_v6</name>
<max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.50</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

</app_config>

Then you will not have use computing preferences. the app_config.xml file overrides the settings in app_info.xml so when you upgrade lunatic's apps you don't need to edit this stuff all over again, and it is smaller.
