1) Message boards : Politics : Another example of USA Gun Laws (or lack of...)? (Message 2046567)

According to ABC News, El Paso law enforcement officials advise that, moments before his killing rampage, the shooter cased the Walmart “looking for Mexicans.” While that may be so, it is nevertheless true that, consistent with his “manifesto,” his recon was also calculated to make sure that he would be attacking in a low-security area. In that regard, the Walmart store had no armed security guard, no police presence, and was located in a shopping mall that was a self-proclaimed “gun-free zone.”

....According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, between 1950 and 2018 97.8 percent of all mass public shootings occurred in gun-free zones. Similarly, in the 20 states that allow teachers to be armed, there have been no school shootings (as well as no accidents or injuries caused by firearms possessed by teachers).

Several other instances are referenced in the article and a simple internet search provides several other sources and common sense would also indicate the uselessness of "Gun Free(read "no retaliation") Zones".

Using an ultra right wing not for profit to proliferate an agenda. Never saw that one coming. 1950 and 2018. That seems kinda arbitrary. Since gun laws and restrictions didn't become a big thing until the NRA went nuclear in the early 1970's with the all Guns are good and its not guns that kill people its people routine.
It's funny how a gun will never kill anyone unless someone pulls the trigger. Fun fact. Not having guns achieves the same result without having to have a gun attached to the sentence,

and the number 97.8 % seems a bit odd. but lets go with it. Yes churches schools and concerts are gun free zones. Whats your point other than guns are bad.
Also of note is the fact that having a gun in public doesn't anyone more safe that not having it. There are laundry lists of people that found having a gun was a detriment in a live fire situation and they were likely to get targeted by either the police or other "good" gun guys. So no not good.
I can personally speak about an octagenarian that was eating at a local restaurant and had his revolver in plain sight. The idea that that weapon made him or his wife safe is stupendously stupid. A high school student could have easily disarmed and murdered both of them without even trying very hard. It's pointless to have the weapon if you are incapable of keeping it from someone trying to take it. BTW that restaurant was full. It's not like he needed to protect himself or me from anyone.

thats 1 PC. Cant see why they did this unless they were trying for some milestone.

And drilling down, this is the owner of the computer those tasks are assigned to. Can't get any further into the account.

Have a great day! :)

Interesting. Newly registered in last December.

Yep, and not only that, he/she either got a hold of the spoofed app or was able to spoof it because it says he/she has 64 GPUs. No way! That's a 3rd or 4th generation Intel CPU and the MB cannot handle THAT many GPUs.

I'd be willing to bet that they just shut down the PC when SETI went into hibernation. Those tasks will sit there until the deadline is reached and the server(s) will have to send them out to other hosts. Like mine, which I still have set up to get GPU tasks. :)

Have a great day! :)

Siran

Agreed. They havent returned a WU since. April 2. So thats 1% of the total outstanding work sitting until late April or late May.

Eric, can you comment on why the beta server code was ported over to main, and maybe related, why anonymous platform hosts can no longer receive work? Is this intentional?

Doubt its intentional. The beta server dying caused the main server to backup on its assimilating duties. Without that cleared it appears that it won't generate more work for anyone.

I witnessed this in the big tree in my backyard. I used my iPhone 7 to take the photos - one with flash and one without flash. I'm always amazed by how good my bug pix are when I use my phone. This is a common spider snacking on a cicada. FYI I am in central Texas and took these pictures today (Sep. 11).

With flash:

With no flash:

I'm betting on a female orb spider that is about to start laying eggs by the looks of her distended abdomen.

Here's a video I uploaded to YouTube: https://youtu.be/T1HtM-zcSTQ

Those are also called assassin bugs.

IIRC it isn't illegal to take a picture of a dead soldier. However, the Geneva Convention prohibits summary executions on the battlefield.
While in poor taste the photo isnt a war crime. It is however behavior unbecoming of a US serviceman and is punishable.

If not then let me explain that the results you have are meaningless without replication. There are millions of triplets and spikes reported daily. Most, if not all, are just anomalies

More likely that the Oil industry had a hand in this. Along with reducing national efficiency rating, hes now gone to cali and told them they HAVE to have more pollution. I heard yesterday that the big oil companies each gave $500k to his inaugural committee which isn't subject to PAC or election law standards. Heck I think GMC and Ford have a hand in this as well since both are giving up on most of their car business and pretty much only building trucks and SUV's. It's funny how they both claim they can't make money on cars. Yet the European and Asian manufacturers don't seem to have that problem. I would hate to stuff myself into an asian car but it just might have to do so. Its that or a Tesla.

I'd really like to see all SUV's and Trucks that are not used as Commercial vehicles be included in the Cafe standards. That would make manufacturers rethink fuel efficiency and cars in general.

You shouldn't have to log off of BOINC and sign in as another user. A single sign in should work across all BOINC projects.

That fan looks frighteningly similar to the 120 and 140mm aerocool Dead silent fans. These are junk. They also promise 100k+ hours of use. Sadly, these things fair worse than a standard cooling fan.

you have 1 AP WU displayed that worked. So I guess you are correct it can work. however you also have 25 failed AP's so there is that. I assume that you wrote that you had completed 2 WU's not that you run 2 at a time.

Reread your post and I see you weren't running the BOINC process from the desktop an the OS may have not loaded the drivers for the GPU thus no GPU processing. I'm not sure at what point the OS loads the drivers and if this might be what is preventing you from using the GPU. I can only assume the OS doesn't load the drivers in the console sessions.

You didn't mention if you installed the Nvidia Linux drivers or the stock Linux ones that install when it sees the GPU. That might just be the first step in getting the openCL to be recognized.

I believe arkayn or mike have a repository of current "lunatics" apps that work with linux/windows/apple products. Just look at their websites for more info. also don't forget to set your permissions on the files. No permissions = not able to use it.

not preaching, or at least not trying to do so. but an Aftermarket HSF shouldn't heat up like that. Check your hsf seating and thermal paste. YOu might just have to little paste or a poorly seated HSF. another thought... Are you using a larger PC case. air doesn't flow well in a hot small microatx box. A very good heat solution is a newer larger box with multiple fans pushing and pulling air. also look for a box that has the PSU attachment on the bottom where the air intake and exhaust are external.

That is if you dont already have this going for you. not to be preaching of course
