1) Message boards : Number crunching : Cloned HD , Should it be same size used space? (Message 1361189)

I seem to remember from a long time ago that Seagate was having a problem with their 7200.10 line of drives that a firmware update was supposed to fix, but didn't for all of them. The 7200.11 line was supposed to be 'fixed' but, as it turned out, some of them were affected and needed a firmware update too.

You can check your firmware here.

I'm just sorta thinking out loud, online.

You could check the chipset heatsinks on the motherboard. I'm not sure what temp is too high but if you burn your finger (like I did once) it's probably too high and causing problems.

i have a 680 crunching 3 wu at a time and an intel graphics onboard that is currently not doing anything. have set to NNT and waiting for everthing to finish before upgrading. my question is when i upgrade and the new boinc sees the intel graphics and starts to use it will it try to crunch 3 wu at a time on it.

I had an ASUS M3N78-VM motherboard that had on board GeForce 8200 and I was able to crunch wu's on it. The running time was longer than the Phenom 9650 CPU I had in it but it still worked. If I'm not mistaken, CUDA support started on the 8xxx GeForce series. So if you have onboard GeForce 8xxx or later it *should* work.

I don't think that there are any apps compiled for Intel GPUs.

Edit: Didn't know about the OpenCL on Intel. I haven't been keeping up on their stuff.

7.0.33 is the version that has the change with the flops value used for GPU tasks increased by a factor of 10. Since .33 is later than your .31, you'll be affected if you try it on work presently in cache.

Thanks for that. I didn't know if the change in the flops value was what kicked off the .3x series or if it was just added when it was ready for mainstream.

Is going from 7.0.31 to 7.0.64 considered and update or upgrade?
What I'm asking is, do I need to finish off the GPU work before I install it?

Thanks guys, it's back!!

From what I remember from last time I had to delete something, a settings file I thought, to get it back.

Changing the position values work too.

Once again, Thank you.

My temperature window has been accidentally pushed off of the screen. It has happened to me a looooong time ago but I was able to Google the answer. Now I can't seem to find it. Ticking and un-ticking 'Show temperature window' does nothing that I can see.

I'm already at the max resolution of my monitor, so I can't increase it to find the window and drag it back to the viewable area. Any help guys?
I'm using the 5.80 x64 version

Did you make sure the sata cables are pushed in all the way? Maybe swap in different cables?

2823324 appears to have installed on my Win7 x64 rig on the 10th.
I haven't noticed anything terribly wrong since then, I wonder if I should uninstall it anyway?

If u don't, don't reboot...

I have rebooted since then.

From what I've read, if it works for you then you don't have the offending third-party software installed that causes the problem so you should be OK. However, if you install one of those programs then your screwed.

I've uninstalled it because I'm always trying new software.

Edit: Yes, Technet subscription works quite well if you have multiple machines.

I wish there was a way to have my wu file on another disc because my D: drive is fine.

I **think** you should be able do this. The steps I would take are (Make a backup of ALL BOINC folders - given):
1) Set 'No network activity'.
2) Shutdown BOINC.
3) Create folder(s) on D: drive for the BOINC data to live. eg. D:\BOINCData\
4) Copy BOINC data folder from current location and paste it to new location. Hint, it's probably easier to keep the same folder names just change C: to D:
5) Reinstall BOINC and, under 'Advanced', point the data directory to the D: drive.

Restart the PC if it asks and watch the messages tab closely when BOINC starts running again. If all looks well enable network access. If it starts complaining about missing files or erroring Wu's just shut it down and restore the backup you made. Nothing lost. Try again if you want.

Others may chime in with other tips for this.

The only problem that I will have with the new drive is that I can't restore the system image from my backups because from what I understand there is a difference in the formatting of backups between HDDs & SSDs. So it will take the major part of a day to re-install all of the programs.

When I made the move from hdd to ssd I made an image backup to a second hdd in the machine. Then I replaced the system drive with the ssd and restored the image.

Then I found out about 'alignment' after running a couple of ssd lifetime expectancy programs. A fresh install of newer OSs will look after alignment when installing by itself. A disk image restored to a ssd will not be aligned.

I found a free program that would, non destructively, align the partitions on the ssd. MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.

Worked for me.

This shows the difference between a 650 and a 650ti .

384 cores vs 768.

I thought I had seen the two types.

My big question is what does the "ti" indicate?

The consensus is that it stands for titanium. Aka - marketing gimic.

I left an app running on my android overnight and the thing was hot as all get out. So how are you guys cooling these things?

Running on the battery my Nexus 7 was up to 30C and it chewed up 40% of the battery in 2 hours.

Plugged in it's hanging around 27C.

Well, the first four wu's have been reported and one validated so far.

Due to me misunderstanding (and the wording changing when you check the option) I ran in 'Power Saving Mode' for about half of the time. It was estimating 55 hours and it was looking like it would take that long. Then after about 15 hours I un-checked the power saving thing.

It finished up in just under 30 hours and gave 94.03 cobblestones, credit, score ... what is it called now?

So far 0.386% complete @ 10 minutes runtime on all four cores. Nexus 7 JB 4.2.2

Estimating 50 hours 55 minutes to completion.

Edit: First wu's it downloads are vlars. Go figure.

I had to bump the voltage up a little to get my 1600 MHz RAM to run at 1600, along with setting the speed manually in the BIOS. I think my voltage is at 1.53

I have a Cyber Power 850VA/510W that's running close to it's limit. It does a great job with the PC, monitor and router but my modem don't like the switch from AC to battery. It needs to be rebooted whenever the power flickers.

FWIW: my UPS can run my modem and router for an hour and fifteen minutes while I watch Netflix on my Nexus 7.

Anyway, LogMeIn is a good option, the only drawback, for me, is that it leads the whole conection through internet which in my case makes everything really, really slow compared to VNC using just the LAN...
Of course if the remote host is in another location then the internet path is unavoidable...

Every time I've used it, it uses the internet to start the connection and connect the two computers. Then all traffic is through the LAN, if the PCs are on the same LAN. I can set graphics quality to high with no slowdowns.

Now, computers at different locations is another matter.

My FX 8150 is overclocked to 4.4 GHZ with aircooling.
Its running stable at 56°C for over 2 years now.

What settings are you using. I have a FX 8150 on stock settings with a Corsair H100 water cooler on a Gigabyte 990 FXA motherboard.

Would like to get it up to 4 GHz. I haven't overclocked since the days of the Barton core Athlon - a long time ago.

ONE last thing , how come I am beating other 560 ti's and even beating 680's ?
my results are showing those cards crunching same unit but taking longer , yet as I said in my first part of post , i am running under clocks !!!

Are you running two tasks at once or just one? The other Anonymous platform (NVIDIA GPU) wingmen are probably running two or three tasks at once. If you are doing one in, say, 500 seconds. They are doing two or three in 800 or 900 seconds or thereabouts.

It's only the stock setiathome_enhanced 6.10 (cuda_fermi) that you can compare one to one runtime.
