Quick bit of news:

2. This bit of news is more interesting than anything but here's another cut from Matt's email on Thursday:

By the way I also am still using my old Sun monitor in conjunction with the new Asus monitor to create a two-headed system on my desktop. It's nice to have several windows off to the side and therefore less distracting. Dan saw this setup and wanted me to do the same on his new desktop, so now we have two two-headed systems in our group. Moving on up!

I do believe our donors have created a monster.

LOL...it brings much joy to my heart to see that da boyz in da lab are enjoying some of their new toys!

And it must make them happy that some folks care enough to give them some things that may not be an absolute necessity, but should make their endeavors a bit more pleasant.

They certainly do deserve it.

KITTYSMILE!!!!

Matt's desk hosts a new:
1. Shuttle
2. 24" Monitor
3. Microsoft Ergo Keyboard
4. Logitech Gaming Mouse
5. Paper organizer (heh)

All of the above were provided by our donors. I think the only thing his desk doesn't have on it is an espresso machine.

The only thing that sticks out to me are the $2 speakers from 10-years ago. I had about three boxes of these un-opened, which I tossed out during my last office clean up. The sound that you get from these are worse than terrible.

In my case it was a matter of happening to be on the phone right when the truck came in.

I wish I was that lucky. I am in almost daily contact with my whole seller, but I still cannot get a card or two for myself.

Last week I was told 'End of the Week', this week I am also told 'End of the Week'. I wonder how long this will go on for?

Maybe I should give up and just wait for the 690, ha ha ha. I don't this it will be in stock, at least here in Australia, till x-mas.

The other issue is the new i7-3770K, which also is not in stock. It it the only new desktop CPU form Intel that is not in stock, and the only one I am looking at, sigh.

What is your budget for the cards?

The GTX 680 are good on power compared to the older GTX 5XX series, but they do come at a hefty price. Maybe look at getting one GTX 680 and run 3 WU on the one card.

When I checked the Results ready to send and hour or two ago I thought it was around 150k, now down to 480.

However, I have never had downloads this fast ever, I am getting over 100kbps, with normal state being around 10kbps. I don't know if this is an issue with the overseas connection or if someone flipped a switch on the server at Berkeley.

I am loving these fast downloads rather than getting stuck with download like I have for the last year or more.

I didn't like the idea of cooling the CPU with hot air from inside the case so I put mine on the outside. It possibly was not the best option but it does job.

I only use one fan but cleaning out the dust is a bugger.

And I should add, it doesn't look too good either.

If we are going to ask for changes to the Tasks screen I would also like to see an option to be able to sort the tasks based on Time Reported.

When you make changes to your computer and just want to quickly compare your new setup against the previous one this would be very handy, rather than trying to scroll through lots and lots of pages trying to find the latest results.

It is a bit frustrating to see a computer with an RAC of say 300 having more tasks on hand than I can get for my 30k RAC computer.

I just hope the new servers will allow us to get a few more WU's per computer.

As the data that we process is more or less random data compression will do little to improve this.
Have a look at compressing an MP3 or JPG file and you will find virtually no compression is achievable.
It is not quite the same but similar enough I think.

Is it too late to to ask for an over looked feature to be added in?

The problem I have, and I guess others as well, is that the newer versions of Boinc wont run on a domain controller. I know that this is not related to Seti@Home per say, but the dev team is the same, isn't it.

I can remember reading that this would be solved, but that was a very long time ago. I am running version 5.x, but I have, somehow gotten 6.6.36 to work on my home server without being able to quite explain this.

Yeah, something definitely changed. Work unit are flowing again. Let's see what happens the coming hours.

Status page shows that there are 60k WU's to go out, but I keep getting 'Project has no tasks available'.

Arvid

That 60K number is over two hours old as of 00:00UTC. Also, all the validators are down. Looks like the start of a long weekend.

Actually, the current time 00:30:00 UTC. So the status page is up to date and should be sending out the WU's. But I am of the strong belief that the back-end is just the same with only the status message having been changed as to not upset people but not sending out work units.

If you have a look at the network graph, it would indicate that the amount of data going out is shrinking, inline with people not being able to download work units.

I don't get the 'Quota Reached' error message any more. I think they have just removed the status message going back to the client, but still running the quota system in the back ground. I guess that was the update an hour ago when they restarted the servers.

I did get some work units a couple of hours ago but nothing since, and I didn't get any CUDA tasks at all. Has anyone gotten any CUDA tasks?

I have just gotten up after a nights sleep only to find that now all the splitters are dead, and I was hoping that after a few more hours had passed, that I might actually get some new WU's, but no. I guess I have 4-5 hours of work left before my main machine is dry of all work and I haven't seen many CUDA WU's over the last week or so.

Has anyone heard anything about the splitters, are they likely to be down for the whole weekend?

From server status page queries on database now at 1100+.
Thats higher than I have seen it for a long time.
Must be all the rigs asking for work because they have got through there 100 quota.
Bandwidth being used to bad effect?

Dave

I guess that all the heavy crunchers are being denied work units and slowly grinding to a halt. The status page now shows that there are over 105k tasks ready to be sent, yet my status page in Bonic keeps telling me that 'Project has no jobs available'.
For every new task that gets uploaded my daily quote goes up. I thought it would only count the tasks that were in progress and not the once that are completed and returned to Seti.

I do like the 35,000 e-mails, no doubt causing all sorts of problems for the administrators, maybe your were not the only once dragged back to work over the weekend.

One another note, the main page for technical notes is getting quite large. I was on a slow wireless broadband link stuck on 2G, when I discovered that this page is huge on a slow connection. Any chance of truncating say the first couple years. If anyone would like access to the older stuff maybe a second page which includes the removed comments.
