I observed the same behaviour on different xp machines. PCs are completely locked and have to be powered down.

Good to here its not just me (XP & 98, previous post). Hopefully its a common bug that will be resolved soon.

I've been running S@H for a couple years now, since upgrading from the old classic version, with no problems. All of a sudden in the last couple days my PC would lock up a few moments after the screen saver stated. This coincided with what appeared to be the software updating itself (?) to version 5.27. I'm running a pretty clean installation of Win98SE, and have eliminated all other causes. I've had to disable it until I can figure out a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Jeff

Try to see if using the blank screen saver helps. BOINC will run as a background task anyway.

Thanks, I will tonight. But I just installed on my new XP machine and have same behavior. Wiil advise.

Look here.

Yeah, that was a good solution to a different problem I had before (Windows Shutdown). Good info indeed, but doesn't address my question in this thread.

Is there a way to close all BOINC processes from the command line (i.e. a batch file)?

I have some automated tasks I run at certain times, and I would like to shut down (and restart) BOINC from a Windows Scheduled Task, if possible.

I've found some info that the command "boinccmd --quit" seems to shut down boinc.exe, but boincmgr.exe is still running.

Next, to restart everything, I assumed that "boincmgr.exe /s" would restart the whole show, (and it seems to), but I end up with two copies of BOINC Manager running.

- Win 98SE
- BIONC 5.2.13
- Single user install, accepting all the defaults
(machine has user profiles enabled, if that matters)

Any help appreciated.

28) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC Manager Lockup (Message 217436)

Post:
I just installed BOINC a couple days ago, and have been slowely getting it to work right.

My problem now is that if I hit any of the web site buttons under the Projects tab in BOINC Manager, it says in the status bar its lauching the browser, but the BOINC Manager window just locks up and I cannot do anything except terminate the Boinc processes in task manager and manually restart the application from the shortcut in my startup folder.

This will always happen UNLESS, I already have an instance of Internet Explorer ALREADY RUNNING first. It can be open to a blanck page, or any internet site. If I then hit one of those buttons, a second IE window opens normally, with the correct page, and BOINC Manager isn't locked up.

Here are my system details:

Win 98SE
IE 6
BIONC 5.2.13
Single user install, accepting all the defaults
(machine has user profiles enabled, if that matters)

Any ideas are much appreciated.

I can't really help you more on the screensaver other than suggesting you look at the Display Property - Boinc Screensaver - Setting. (I don't remember the specifics for Win98)
I use the power setting to blank the monitor.

Personally when I want to know what Boinc is doing I open the Manager to the Work tab and check the CPU time column. It update every 5 sec.

As to the double post just go to edit of the duplicate post.
Select all, delete the text and click on ok.
It doesn't completely remove the post but cleans up the thread a bit.

Thanks - Appreciate the help. The screen saver just started working, and I havn't done anything else. Go figure :)

I have another question, but is probably best to start a new thread ...

Sorry about this duplicate post ... I goofed up, and don't see a delete button.

I ran Boinc on Win98 for a year and and it ran well, but there are a few minor issues you may wish to be aware of.

1. Win98 does not like the new screensaver. I woudn't activate it. It used to crash my system. Besides it just wastes cycle that can be better used to crunch WU.

2. You can set Boinc to run always. I found that it didn't interfere with the normal use of my computer. The only exception where program that made heavy use of graphic, such as movie renderings or some of the newer heavily graphic using games. I just turn off the crunching while playing.

3. If you decide to do more than 1 project, do not use the option 'leave in memory'. Win98 has strange hiccups that causes it to not switch properly from one application to another, causing it to try to crunch more than 1 application at a time and very little work is actually done.

4. Boinc doesn't always shut down properly when you try to exit Win98.
This file should clear up the shut down problem.
Download and unzip into your windows directory the file Default.zip to instruct Windows to close the SETI CLI when exiting. You may need to reboot after to activate this change. Note this windows patch doesn't always work with Windows 98 original edition. The file you are unzipping is called _Default.PIF and contains the information to tell Windows to honor application close instructions. It only impacts 16 bit (DOS) and 32 bit console applications.

You did resolve an issue I was about to ask - rebooting/restarting Windows and that pesky BOINC confirmation dialog that pops up. I have my computer (via scheduled tasks) to automatically shut down or reboot at certian times. Your file got rid of the dialog, so it so it shouldn't interfear with my setup now. Thanks!

Regarding the screen saver, via the settings I just want it to come on for for a minute so I can see it working, then go to a blank screen. That's how I had the old SETI program set up, and logic tells me I should be able to do the same with this program.

If anyone can advise on how to get the graphics to display for the screensaver, much appreacited. I have searched alot over the last few days for some clue about this. My details above in original post

I cannot get the screen saver (graphics) to work.

When it goes into screen saver mode, a message bounces around saying that BOINC is not running, automatic startup not detected, and to please reinstall. I've reinstalled three times. BOINC is running, as I assume from the icon in the system tray.

I've read The top ten list ten times, and can't seem to see what the resolution is. My configuration:

Win 98SE
BIONC 5.2.13
Single user install, accepting all the defaults
(machine has user profiles enabled, if that matters)

I beleive the number crunching is working, as I apprear to have some credit.

Any answers appreciated.
