Thanks for the input. As I said, my problems have been for about 3 weeks, not 1, but that could just be my tired old computer.

Can anyone tell me how long this has been going on? It seems like it's been 3 weeks since I was able to successfully upload a completed BOINC unit.

The test results indicate I'm Jean Luc Picard, but if I had my druthers, I'd rather be Lazarus Long.

It appears D.J. Schweitz is closest to me. I'm at 38.582 deg. N, 121.493 deg. W, also known as Sacramento, CA. I've never met anyone who will admit to being a S@H or BOINC (or other shared computing project) member.

Sheesh, children, if you can't play nice with one another you should go sit in a corner.

Just an FYI: apparently the server WAS down, as I shut off the computer last night and when I turned it on this evening it uploaded the 5 completed work units that were waiting and downloaded 3 more work units to crunch. Problem (apparently) solved.

I removed it from add/remove programs in Windows XP. I got a message that said it couldn't remove all of the components; that was O.K. by me.

Mullet, thanks for your answer.

I was running BOINC v4.19 with no problems and upgraded to v4.25. Per request, I removed 4.19 before I uploaded 4.25 Now it will not report results. Here is the message series:

Not to pick nits (or noses), read it again, Wolf. The predicted wave is 50 meters, not 50 feet. And I believe the energy involved is part of an exponential factor, not a simple mathematical one (that is to say, since the wave would be more than 3 times higher, the energy would be more than 9 times more). How far inland would THAT wave reach?

Back to topic, if the use of slavery is the basis for the wrath of the gods, then ALL cultures must die, as ALL cultures have used slavery at one time or another. That includes Africans and Native Americans. Historically, this is how ALL pre- or neo-industrial cultures advanced. If they didn't advance, they died out.

In addition to the previously stated dates of apocalypse, the world was supposed to end on May 13, 2004. But it didn't. This was yet another example of someone reading chicken bones or adding all the 'e's and 'o's in the bible and determining when the world was supposed to end. The really sad thing is that after all this crying wolf, if someone actually figures out the real deal, no one will believe them because we've heard this song too many times before.

Paul, In California sturgeon must be at least 46 inches long but no more than 72 inches long. And yes, the fish was edible. If it's prepared correctly it doesn't even taste like fish...it tastes like chicken (and how cliche is THAT!?).

To play devil's advocate, you could look at it another way. If one chose to, one could consider imperialism nothing more than Darwinism on a national scale. It's kind of like why the dog lick's his rear.....because he can.

That's why in nature the big ones eat the little ones.....because they can. That's nature's way.

I'm not being an advocate for imperialism either way; just posing another thought.

I think what irritates a lot of Americans is the perception of communist ideals rampant in the rest of the world. Karl Marx, Das Kapital: "From each, according to his ability, to each, according to his need."

The United States is a rich country; there's no doubt about that. It's far richer than most of the rest of the world. Our perception is that most of the poorer countries seem to always have their hands out, expecting the U.S. to give them aid. And for the most part, we do. The dilemma is figuring out where noblese oblige ends and communism begins; it's kind of a fine line.

It's like, first you don't give enough aid, then it's not the kind of aid we want. It's just gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme more, but don't ask how we're going to spend it. To me it's just human nature: if I give you $100,000,000.00 I'd kind of like to know where my money's going.

Going back to my first post in this thread, I wasn't completely joking. There comes a point where you get tired of people telling you what you need to do for them, then criticizing you when it wasn't enough help, or wasn't the right kind of help. I was kind of wondering how the rest of the world might react if the U.S. DID make our foreign policy one of complete isolation. I think much of the world thinks the world as a whole would be a better place. Would it? I don't know. I don't think so, but again, that's just my opinion.

As I said at the start, this is my OPINION of what a lot of Americans PERCEPTION is. I'm just an average guy with average intelligence (I hope). I'm not some kind of expert on foreign relations.

BrainSmashR, there's another way to get statehood...let good old Uncle Sugar conquer your butt!

Actually, I have an even more radical idea and it only affects 2 countries:

1) Annex Canada (for the oil)

2) Annex Mexico (ditto)

3) Give all American citizens 30 days to drag themselves back if they happen to be out of the country (military excluded, see next item)

4) When all are ashore that're coming ashore, bring all the military back. The Army and Marines guard the soil around the new country (Greenland, down the east coast to Guatamala, then back up the west coast to Alaska); the Navy and Coast Guard guard the water around the same territory; the Air Force guards the skies over everything.

5) For their continued support in the face of being a minority, extend possible statehood to England and Australia

6) Tell the rest of the world to go hang...we won't interfere in anything you want to do inside your country, but you get no handouts (foreign aid) at all, ever.

How's THAT for radical!
