21) Message boards : Cafe SETI : Verbal IQ Translation (Message 381554)
Posted 29 Jul 2006 by Profile MJKelleher
Post:
Just quickly, everyone: how does a score of 121/128 on a 'standard' verbal IQ test translate into the mainstream IQ tests/results? Does it translate at all?
This information alone wouldn't translate. You've been given the raw score, but you don't know how it compares to how anybody else might score, which is the basis of IQ. Depending on the questions, it might be very easy to get 121 correct, or very difficult. You'll need the test administrator to let you know what test you took, or (better) how your score translates into IQ. The second is better because some tests take into account other factors, notably the age of the test taker, and you may not be able to find the information on how the other factors are taken into account.

Good luck!

Some people I know checked this out, it was in Ohio (can't recall where off the top of my head). The lights weren't on all night, they shut down the display by midnight or so. The music was over low-power FM radio, and with more selections than is on that clip. They took it down this past season, though, because of all the traffic they were attracting, disrupting the neighborhood.

"Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal and execution is carried out automatically and without pity."

Matt said that he was cleaning up the message boards, this is likely part of that process. When Science got moved down, we were in the throes of the shut-down of SETI-Classic, so had a lot of new (and distruntled) BOINC users. That's done, so the pounding of Science should be a thing of the past, even being at the top of the list. Give the Science its due and put it first.

My opinion in this has been stated in other threads. Yes there is a "penalty" for this in place now, but it is in my opinion not strict enough. Currently you loose one work unit in allowable quota for every canceled (or errored out) work unit. While I agree with this for errors, as many errors are not due to the user themselves, I think that the penalty for purposefully aborting wu's should be bumped up to at least a reduction of 10 for every "user aborted" wu. This would discourage people eating all of the "good nuts" and leaving the "bad nuts" for others.
While in theory I agree with the principle, I don't think it would have any great effect. Abort one result and get the quota knocked down by 10, then quickly return a fast result and the quota gets doubled up to the max. The quota penalty just isn't designed as a discouragement for aborting work, it's to rein in the machines that have gone sour and aren't returning good work at all. Someone would have to build a separate track of work aborted and returned to affect the quota, distinct from the machine errors, for an effective deterrent. Anybody that riled up about it to tackle the job?

Sending cash through the mail is generally discouraged, because of the high risk of theft/damage/loss. I'm tempted to say that you'll never see a solicitation suggesting that cash be mailed. You've got no recourse if it goes missing somewhere along the path.

If it arrives intact, I'm sure they'd figure out a way to accept it. 8-)

Result #334980396 --

<core_client_version>4.45</core_client_version>

It's using an older version of BOINC, which doesn't calculate the fpops used by Enhanced to calculat credit. The other result is on a machine with a version 5+ client. Ideally, the claim of 237 will be dropped as the high in the quorum.

No issues here, just transitions.

That's from the Beta project as i already wrote earlier in this thread...

I'm quite cognizant of that fact, I was merely demonstrating that there appears to be a download problem with Beta as well as an upload problem with that same project.
Not a download problem with Beta, it really does appear to be out of work. From the Beta status page:

34) Message boards : Number crunching : Is there one BOINC version that will run/process ALL of the BOINC projects ? (Message 311770)

Post:
You've got a bit of confusion between the BOINC software and the SETI software. You downloaded BOINC version 5.2.13, which will work fine with Rosetta. (aside, the current release version is 5.4.9, but it's not a required update) BOINC is managing SETI Enhanced version 5.12, which it downloaded on its own. When you attach to Rosetta, BOINC will get not only the work, but also Rosetta 5.16 to process their work. Apart from attaching and, if needed, adjusting your resource shares, you don't need to do anything else.

Hope this helps!

If you click on the Results ID for this, you'll see (among other things)
SETI@Home Informational message -9 result_overflow
NOTE: The number of results detected exceeds the storage space allocated.
That generally means it had too many "results", likely interference from terrestrial sources. When that happens, it aborts very quickly so you can go on to possibly more productive work. We all get them at times. 8-)

X = roman numeral for 10. So X0 = 100th birthday! Congrats on your century milestone! ;-)
Only if you're mixing notation, and I wrote x0, not X0. In mathematics, x is the unknown quantity, and in Roman numerals there is no 0. But thanks for the congrats anyway! 8-)

No Work from Project

Penguin Disabled

I take this to mean that galileo, milkyway, kosh, klaatu, and kryten combined can't match the muscle of a single little penguin.

I only report what I see, I even consulted your own excelent graphs. Units available steadily declined from 450,000ish in last 24 hrs.

From my lowly box (times EDT):
4/19/2006 9:02:25 PM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
4/19/2006 9:02:25 PM|SETI@home|Reason: To fetch work

Of course, now I'm in EDF, so it may be a while before I get to this!

In continuing on my last post, if the work units can't be resent to me then can the work units that I mentioned be deleted from My Results list?
Once that work is validated for the other computers, it'll be deleted from all the hosts' records, automatically. It won't hang out there for long.
