It seems that the majority opinion in this thread is that the cause of the high price of prescription drugs and other medical expenses in this country is the capitalist desire for profit. The question to ask is health care to be an industry or is health care to be something else?
One can argue we have the best health care in the world and that is true if you are very well off but as one goes down the income ladder not so much. In fact for overall results for the total population we score quite poorly.
Gary has offered a few constructive ideas concerning patents but that is only part of the problem. The insurance industry is very culpable in that they allow the providers to game the system. Their should be some reward for them when they clamp down on those who are gaming the system rather than allowing them to just pass on the added expenses to their customers.
It has been argued that the free market will correct the situation and I say it has not. The reason is that a free market requires knowledge of the market and patients do not have enough medical knowledge to question what their provider prescribes. A free market by definition does not exist.

==========================================================

as i said before there two types of free market the market of scarcity and the
open market where there is competition for your business.

all the mergers of pharmaceutical companies is supposed to not be allowed
under anti-trust law, over seen by,
U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Antitrust Division, these are the people that broke up standard oil.
it is time again to break up the big companies so there are enough
that at least some will offer their wares at a lower price to get more sales.

as to the average person not knowing enough all i can say is that may have been the case when i started being ill but i would be dead now if i had not
used the internet to learn, and too shop for what i need.

greedy companies in the US!

Please define greedy and give examples, also I assume you are saying that only US pharmaceutical companies are greedy?

I personally do not know anyone who has been mistreated by the US health service, quite the reverse.

So please lets get a little perspective.

Thank you.

============================================================
you are right that it is not just the companies in the us and it is not entirely
the company's fault for doing what the law tells them they can.

the real question is how do we change the rules and practises in the us
so that all the doctors work together to ensure best outcomes,
the insurance company's actively involved in reducing medical cost while increasing care,
and get the pharmaceutical companies to once again compete for our business.

the free market tends to operate in two modes
competition to set a fair market value, and what the market can bear.

the form what the market can bear requires a monopoly, a near monopoly
or collusion.

the merger of so many companies over the last 20 years has reached the point
that near monopoly is basically a fact.

India ignored the us patents for aids drugs because the licensing would have cost over 1800 dollars per patient per month the Indian pharmaceutical company
provide this medication to patients for about 1.80 and still make a very modest

also http://www.aravind.org/ now make the lenses for cataract for 2 dollars
a pair the real cost of just barely making a profit.

there is no market pressure or incentive for drug company to compete driving
the prices down to fair market value.
and the us government has failed to lead medical research in directions that
will promote cures lowered cost and a general increase in wellness.

this can be traced back to president reagan who stop a large part of government grants for pure research.

the pharmaceutical companies were only to happy to pick up the slack
because they would then own outright what they learned and that is when the focus became what can make me money now.

also there is very little coordination between specialty's a surgeon sees surgical solution an endocrinologist sees hormonal solutions,an epidemiologist
sees disease as the root cause.
this is not surprising this is what they are trained to see.
in very few places in the us does the heart guy talk to the surgeon and the endocrinologist to arrive at the best course of treatment.
so yes the system is broken, but if you look world wide most of the research in medicine is done right here in the us so those wonderful socialize medicine
countries have it good though they would have much less is the us citizen did
not pay through the nose and play guinea pig for the rest of you.

we are a nation of shoppers after all shopping is the most important
thing in the universe .lol
let us shop and the market will take care of the rest.
universal health does not fix the problem it shifts the burden.

my point is in the us if you are well off and have good insurance
you do not care what it cost.
if you are poor as i am and poor being a relative thing
in most of the world i am well off you also do not pay.
and because of this we do not see the real cost of these things.

the only people in the us who do see the cost are the working poor
comprised mostly the middle class with bills that can't be counted
to reclassify them as poor.
because of this there is no real check on the balance.

i am disabled retired and have been since i was 48
i use lantus pens there 1500 dollars for a box of 5
i also use humulin-r also about 1500 dollars a month
the pain med's i am on come to twice that and i am on several
other meds including metformin the only drug i pay for is the
tetracycline which costs me 10.80 a month cash with a goodrx coupon.
when i found out how much the pens cost i had 4 boxes when i run out
i will be going back to the vial which is cheaper
i have controlled my type 2 diabetes with diet but having been mostly
bedridden this is hard.
because i do not pay there is very little incentive for me to shop for
the best care at the best price.
this and and countries like those in the uk and europe dictating what drug companies can make shifts the burden to those who will pay.
this is why if you go into a hospital with no insurance an aspirin costs 20
bucks.the only fix for this is for people like me or the insured to start shopping for services.
the one thing that the government might be able to do in this is to provide
a way to assess the expected cost of treatment and reward those that found
their services for less and let those who went way over share some of that cost.the average american will not shop unless it hits his or her pocket.

i got a post from change.org to sine a potision for background checks on gun
purchases sighting this,

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/27/us/wdbj7-virginia-journalists-shot-during-live-broadcast.html?_r=0

a fired black newscaster shoots two white newscasters live on air.
now am i supposed to think the black newscaster was racies, or the white newscasters were racist or the station was racist.
i see a tragedy were 2 white people were gunned down by a black man who also
tragically committed suicide and i do not see how a background check could have helped.
so i find the whole thing sad does that make me a racist?
please explain it to me because i do not understand!

most drug company have some plan if you go to their web sight to help you get your meds if you are truly financially stressed by their definition.
so definitely check their website, but there is no substitute for shopping
your med needs around to get the best price. the dependence on insurance to
companies to manage the cost that they get a piece of is how we got here.
shopping and forcing them to take less is the only real fix.

http://www.goodrx.com (your brand)
will get you a coupon this is for cash purchase only and verys by drug
but the tetracycline that use to cost 6 buck but is now 1380 buck a month
costs 10.80 cash as you can see i like paying 1\35 even if it is not covered.

it is pointless to install seti on a machine that does not have web access
so go to the seti home page and install it.
if on the other hand you want to be able to run seti from a memory stick
when you plug it into a computer any computer there are ways to do that too.
so what in a lot more detail do you want to do?

because os's crash it is always wish to install the os on 1 drive
and every thing you might want to recover on 1 or more others.
i have been running the evaluation copy of 10 for several months now
and as far as i can see the lilo multi os loader and the registry involving licensing seem to be very sensitive but other than that windows 10 runs robustly
and smoothly and i have found solutions to any driver or install problems i have had with the exception of very old games.
i have crashed 10 a couple of time requiring reload thought both times were my fault so win 10 like all of its predecessors fixes so problem causes so more and generally move thing on.
unix works well to it just takes a lot more hands on while setting up.

as to machines that are only running seti the less you load the faster it will run so a minimum install of something like linux mint could work well.

since the grain absorbed co2 and what is left over after consumption will become plane food wouldn't beer be at least carbon neutral if not carbon absorbent
in fact would not the production of much more beer for local consumption be a possible solution. Wiggo has it right brew your own.

first it is probably my fault for mentioning hamas in the first place way back in the thread. Hamas is like shin fain in northern ireland was the political wing
of a divided force, hezbollah is the one's with the guns.
second it is not possible for for Israel to kill all the palestinians as most no longer live in palestine but are on diaspora through the rest of the arab world
something the jews understand better than most.hamas and hezbollah are funded by the shea primarily from iran other factions by the sunni primarily saudi arabia
both factions wish to push the israelis in ro rhe sea.
both factions have brought no palestinian fighters in who cause most of the trouble.Israel needs an arab friend the palestinians need a homeland and if third parties would stop stirring the pot these 2 peoples might realize that it is in their mutual best interest to come to an acomidation. If this ever happens they will make the desert bloom.

none of the b list causes abortion. They either prevent fertilization or implantation neither of which are considered to be an abortion.
That is a mute point, the SCOTUS said they are abortifacients and that's whose opinion counts. You and I saying yes, no, yes, no means nothing.

============================================================
SCOTUS are lawyers and judges not biologists and as such are not immune to making bad law on the bases of bad science.

while it would be nice for SCOTUS to be infallible they are after all only human.

while SCOTUS is very powerful they have not yet found a way to rewrite biology.

there is a basic premise when dealing with a persons freedoms and rights.

that premise is that your rights and freedoms end where mine begin.

so in essence this thread is not truly about whether or not the owners have the right to practice their religion it is about where the line is between their rights and the employees rights.

since they felt that it was immoral to have anything to do with paying for the section b part of the contraceptives they could have tried to set up a deal with the insurance company so that any employee that wanted that part could have gotten it by paying that part of the insurance on their own.

that way they could have avoided interfering with their employees rights without doing anything they considered immoral it was the outright denial of their employees rights that makes this an issue.

Sometimes you have to hit people over the head with a 10 foot lead clue by 4.

See Clyde, nowhere does the SCOTUS state that Hobby Lobbies constitutional rights are violated by being mandated to pay for contraceptives. It only talks about the RFRA, which is not a constitutional amendment and therefor congress can easily make a law that alters the working of the RFRA.
The SCOUTS ruling has nothing to do with contraceptives, it has everything to do with forcing someone to pay to kill babies. I too can play the B.S. game.

You people keep pushing to force others to do your bidding and it could get ugly. Look at the US southern boarder. Anyway this has nothing to do with you. We in the US don't care that you put women, who are for rent, on display in windows.

...What do you do next?

Don't drop bombs on them? Or how about not invading the place to begin with? Perhaps work to find a political solution that ends the violence?

It is to easy to excuse the large scale killings of innocent people simply because a terrorist was hiding behind them and terrorists are bad.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

the sad thing is hamas is funded by arab groups that want the violence to continue and of all the peoples in the area the israelis are the best fit for a long term friendship with the palestinians who provide grunt labor and middle management for most of the arab world.were they to come to terms with israel
it could provide the design and engineering to turn that area into a paradise.
it is a shame that it will never happen.
if the palestinians ever do come to terms with israel they are the only partner in the area that actually would have a vested interest in protecting them with no ulterior motive.
