21) Questions and Answers : Web site : Inactive Founder of a Team (Message 199335)

The team that I joined, Indonesia, has an inactive founder.
Perhaps SETI can delegate it to someone else who is active in crunching or just let it be..?

ARGHHH.. I installed 5.2.12 and again, the computer restarted itself for the third time now (in 3 days)

I am crunching from my work place also with a LAN connection. This problem never occured. (run 5.2.12 at work also)
The BOINC at my home have this problem. I use dial up from home and did not connect to internet while I was away.

Could it be the "Network Activity" option that have caused this?

After the computer restarted and when I open the BOINC Manager, I noticed that it had just finished crunching workunit and was crunching a new one (CPU Time: 00:01:00)

... For example, if I get average credit 100/day with 1 project, does it mean that I could get credit 200/day if I joined 2 project? Or maybe 300/day if I joined 3 project?

No, your computer will get about the same, some people join all projects and work out how much credit/time period each project awards on average and crunch for the one that gives them most.

This credit/time is not the same for all computers, some projects do better on Intel rather than AMD and vice versa, and some like lots of memory and some don't seem to care so long as you have the minimum.

So, if I want to get more credits faster, the only way is to add another CPU to crunch workunits?

In General preferences there is a "switch between applications" setting, by default it's 60 minutes I have mine set to 180 minutes(3hours) so it will finish one, then move to the next without preempting(pausing). They don't run at the same time. CPU time is only accumulated when it's running.
does this answer your question?
tony

Actually what I need to know before I join other project is: Can I get credits faster if I join more project?

For example, if I get average credit 100/day with 1 project, does it mean that I could get credit 200/day if I joined 2 project? Or maybe 300/day if I joined 3 project?

I run BOINC with only one project, SETI@Home.

Now, if I join other project, will my crunching time for SETI@home increase?

Let say now my Average CPU time in crunching is 10,000 seconds. If I join other project, will it become 20,000? Will that other project slowed down the crunching time?

Running boinc uses 100% of your processor, this useage causes heat to build. I've experienced what you're describing. If you clean the heatsink/service the machine, it shouldn't crash from what seems to me to be an overheating condition.
If you've just serviced it, there are other less likely things

Well, it was not the overheating problem, I have Airconditioner in my room with temperature of 17-24 Degree Celcius. The temperature inside the processor and system zone are also under control (Intel Active Monitor Temperature Measurement Software). And I have just cleaned the heatsink some weeks ago.

Diagnosting the HDD is a good idea, and perhaps I will try to upgrade to 5.2.12.

Thanks to you all.

My computer somehow restarted itself when I left it crunching and it has been the second time now. This happened since I installed the 5.2.8 version.

Windows XP reported that there were some error with the BIOS.
Everything was just fine before I upgraded to 5.2.8.

Should I just reinstalled the previous 4.45 or upgrade to the 5.2.12?

It's not a bug, it's a feature. It's done so you can controll multiple computers over a network from one main computer. Instead of having to open Boinc Manager on all of them, you do this from the one centralized computer.

oww.. ic.. ok.. cool then, I suppose.. :)
Btw, any suggestion where to hang out for irc chat of SETI community?
Thanks dude.. :)

I don't know if you all have the same effect with this new 5.2.8. (I am an XP User)

Open the BOINC Manager, then Close it (Minimize to the taskbar).
Then try to click the BOINC Manager shortcut again and poof.. 2 BOINC Manager.. Close the second one.
Click the BOINC Manager shortcut again and now I got 3 BOINC Manager.. :)

Exit all the BOINC Manager and you'll get error with the last one.

Hello world,

In my "Result for computer", there are too many WUs(around 50) with the Server State = "In Progress", as if my computer already downloaded them.
Strage thing is that I never received most of those WUs yet.

This happened after the last Sept 11th outage.

Please visit this link:

Thanks and appreciate if someone could notice the guys@seti.

34) Questions and Answers : Windows : Can I still use the old Seti@home client? (Message 136640)

Once you get used to it, SETI BOINC is just as easy and even cooler. The failed downloads are probably because their servers were shut down a couple days ago and now they're overloaded and just need time to catch up. However, you may also want to check your firewall settings.

In the mean time, you may want to attach to other projects to keep your computer busy while SETI isn't sending out work (now and in the future). This is one of the biggest advantages of BOINC.

Could it be that BOINC sometime alowed the "overloaded" situation to happened so that people will join other projects as well?
