One quick word of advice when you swap out the motherboard/cpu. Run the driver installation CD/install all the drivers for your new board on the old system BEFORE you change the board. WinXP is less cranky when it finds new devices and the drivers are already there.

If your machine is booting into Widows XP, you'll find a c:\boot.ini file that you can add entries to pick which partition to boot. One of my Dual boot files looks like :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Or and even easier (?) way is START/RUN/CMD and enter bootcfg /? for all your options.

I usually don't "let" Microsoft update anything but I had issues with things and after 900 changes, I just "re-installed" XP with an SP3 upgrade CD, the did the updates thru windows update but didn't really go thru them. No harm, no foul, just alot of foul words.

The PSU and card seem to be ok. PSU tested with a volt meter and graphics card gets a beating with kids gaming. Computer runs fine as long as Seti isn't running.Latest is I removed the card, rebooted the machine, removed the drivers thru add/remove software, deleted the directories and ran a register cleaner. re-installed the card and the 290.53 drivers, which after research gave me no troubles for a long time till Microsoft updates changed them. Computer has now gone 12 hours without crashing for the first time in a week. We shall see how it plays out.

TEmps are ok. PSU is a THermaltake 850W. BSOD is pointing at NV_DISP4 or computer just locks up. the nv_disp4 leads me to think is a driver release issue but I've been wrong before.

I have a 2.0 ghz Pentium D with 4GB ram and a a EVGA GT 520 and it's driving me nuts. Can't get a stable set up. Tons of blue screens and such. It's nothing no one else hasn't gone thru, but I can't find a post with a consensus. I'm currently running Boinc 6.10.60, nVidia driver release 296.10 and the lastest Lunatics installer (unified win32 v0.40).The operating system is Win XP, Service pack 3 with all the updates.

Just wondering what anyone would change. Thanks in advance.

P.S I have every release of everything so don't worry about me getting things.

What has worked for me in the past once or twice (and not worked also) is to use the Retail Pro CD and instead of booting from the CD is to run the setup.exe under Win2K. I've done it several times and it seems to be a 50-50 shot, but it.s an idea.

Another option is to rum the user migration tool and select EVERYTHING. The install XP and import it all. There are ways I guess but I've learned over the years that a day of doing it clean is less time than a week spent looking for a shortcut.

NO matter how much we plied they do as THEY WANT

You forget the whole concept was we donate unused cpu cycle for them to use as they please. This never started as we have a new thing we're giving up our lives for for your entertainment.

1st of all let me apologize for mt tone yesterday. It did kind of come off strong but it was a bad day.

2nd of all, while the tone was wrong, the context remains. Yes, I'm not a 31 gazillion pt per day cruncher, but I have had my pc's crunching since 1999. AT this point it's only one, but have had as many as 15 crunching at once. Never have I spent extra money on any PC to make it a super cruncher. They where all PC's in the house or at work that had idle time and I threw seti@home on them.

When this all started, the folks at seti had an idea. They made a screensaver to use your computer when you weren't to crunch data. The community figured out how to have it run all the time. The community figured out how to optimize it. The community figured out how to cache work units. The community figured out how to crunch on GPU's. The community figured out how to move and transfer WU's between CPU's and GPUs to get the most RAC.

And a hand full of users whine and moan that the folks at seti can't keep up. It gets real boring real fast folks.

I submit to any of you. Go buy a new car. Any car. Spend $5000 in getting a race motor installed that is 300hp more than the motor in the car. Then drive the car to the dealer you bought the car and complain you keep burning off the tires, your gas mileage sucks and it won't stay on the road. FIX IT or i'm giving it back and I want a refund.

The handful of guys at berkley still doing this, mostly part time and as volunteers are interested in the SCIENCE, not in the RAC and until the community realizes theis, the same 7 people will waste threads on this board complaining that they can find money to make super crunchers so why isnt seti finding money to accomadate them. We are helping them, The are NOT appeasing us......

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Me being here from damnb near the the beginning and you for 11 years the ORIGINAL premise (which you forgot) was we would donate unused cpu cyles for the scientists to use as they saw fit and maybe BOTH parties would reap benifits of the research.

It has now become the OMG I NEED POINTS free web game for most of the crowd. It was NEVER supposed to be a game.

Well, I'm one of those who just built a mega-cruncher, and it sits idle at SETI. I did fire up Einstein this morning, and it is crunching away at it. To me this is a fun project, whether it gives me work or not. Sure I liked it when I saw my RAC rise to 38,500, and still gain 1000 points a day, but that can be redone when things get fixed. My computer is just as powerful, and I use it with Starry night software, playing any of the highest graphics games I can find, or writing code and designing databases. I would have built this even if I knew the project would be wobbly for an extended period of time. I'm here for the science, and this is one way I can contribute.

I have donated to S@H, and I will donate much more, because I really want to be a part of this project. Even the crunching is only one part of it. Just a few months ago I would never have imagined that I would be talking to people all over the world every day. I have had some really interesting conversations with some very intelligent people. I have read some of the political discussions, some of the SETI science, and some of the non SETI science. What a wonderful forum! If my monster cruncher goes idle for a while, to me it's no big deal. I'm already turning out a lot of crunching for Einstein. Anyway, I just want to say that I really like and respect all of you. Whether working or not, this project has greatly enhanced my life. I feel like I have found a home.

:)

Steve

And Quietdad, you miss my point. They do in fact have a right to complain.
Even a Candystriper has a right.. or obligation.. To ask if they see an unaware doctor come in and pull out a life support plug to plug in a popcorn machine.

Do the numbers really matter? nope.. not to me. But I do use them to try to optimize things. And it will be nice when they make some kind of sense to me
again.

Those that are complaining the loudest, and leaving the most, are some of the highest contributors. I do not expect you to care. But to say they do not have a right to complain? You exceed yourself.

What if I say you have no right to complain about them complaining?

You could say I have no right to complain about you complaining about complaining.

Then we can all be wrong.

But PLEASE show a bit of respect for your fellow lusers. It contributes to
constructive discourse.

Im not "complaining" as much as stating an opinion. My opinion is just that, my opinon. Yes the heavy hitters "contribute" the most in a one sense, but in another sense they cost the most too.

Are you "dedicated" to this project enough that if the message came "We have enough crunched data and we are stopping WU distribution while we analyze the results for now and determine what if/the next step is gonna be" that you will keep following it, or are you gonna say "DAmn, lets find something else to crunch my RAC is dropping". It's the second group that complains the loudest here.
