My tv puts off more heat than my cruncher so do my light bulbs and my toaster and my refrierator and my dryier and my oven and I live in virginia where the temps regularly are in the 90's and 100's during the summer so why scrafice the cruncher?

I don't see how that's possible, unless you aren't actually crunching anything. lol.

I have been crunching sine 1999 have a rac of 35,000 and a credit of 25 million and that is with one cruncher so I crunch I use my 4 tons of ac to my domicle cool. So it is possible to crunch in the summer time I do not sacriface my laundry or cooking or watching tv or keeping food cool in the summer so not my cruncher either.

What specs are the most important, and which are more trivial. I am guessing RAM is not overly important, but if I want to find the best bang for the buck, what specifications should I be looking at?

Thanks!

Are you looking to replace your current GTX 550 Ti if not get another GTX 550 Ti and it will double your rac.

You ask why bother? I would do it because you want to help with the science or you would like to find out whether or not there are other people in the world apart from humans.

As for the science, the only real science, as far as I am concerned, is with the "AstroPulse" sub-project -- and for the most part, I only accept AP WUs.

As far as finding out if "intelligent beings are out there", I am already 99.999% sure that there are. But as far as ever receiving any signal from "them", I am just about as sure that we will NOT. Why? Mainly because the probability that other "people" with technology similar to ours exist within a reasonable radius (say within 100 light-years or so) at this particular sliver of time in the overall age of the universe is mighty, mighty slim.

That is why I dedicate most of my computer time to projects that have more of a chance of providing some "real" science.

So have at it, all you geeks out there expecting to receive a SETI signal within your life times! :-)

If they do exist they may not use radio waves or micro waves technology. They may use something entirely different such as light waves or mental telepathy or some other organic technology that SETI cannot detect.

Same problem here why bother? It has been over 10 years now a new profile or design is needed or formula or whatever.

My system looks like this below Win8 only see 16gb ram in dual channel because the asus p6t does not have win8 drivers so I need to upgrade the cpu and mb to get full use of my memory sticks. I had a Thermaltake V1 Max-Performance CPU Cooler with Massive 110mm Blue LED Full-Range Variable Speed Fan CL-P0401 but the pins went bad and the air temps were in the 60's and then I had to use the stock intel cooler and the temps were in the mid 90's. With the Antec Kuhler H2O 620 Liquid CPU Cooler System the temps are in the mid 50's. I run Jason's Lunatics_x41zc_win32_cuda50.exe and AK_v8b2_win_x64_SSE3.exe with a rac of over 38,000 and climbing. The AZZA Solano 1000 CSAZ-1000 Full Tower Case (Black) runs real quite and cool compared to my old case which was noisy and I had to leave the panels off and had a fan blowing on the video cards. In the old case the cards ran real hot in the 80-90's. I moved the 2nd card to the 3rd slot and it cooled down. Now they run in the 60's with the fans at about 50%.

Operating System
MS Windows 8 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz 57 °C
Bloomfield 45nm Technology
RAM
24.0 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 534MHz (8-8-8-20)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6T (LGA1366) 52 °C
Graphics
G276HL (1920x1080@60Hz)
767MB GeForce GTX 460 (nVidia) 66 °C
767MB GeForce GTX 460 (nVidia) 67 °C
ForceWare version 307.74
SLI Disabled
Hard Drives
125GB OCZ OCZ-AGILITY4 ATA Device (SATA)
Optical Drives
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10L ATA Device
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

I just upgraded since September.

Coolmax ZU Series ZU-1000B 1000W ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Modular Power Supply = $87.74

win 8 pro upgrade = $39.99

Acer G276HL Dbd 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor = $244.76

AZZA Solano 1000 CSAZ-1000 Full Tower Case (Black) = $114.99

Antec Kuhler H2O 620 Liquid CPU Cooler System = $59.99

OCZ Technology 128GB Agility 4 Series SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive( SSD) With Up to 420 MB/s Read And 72K Max.IOPS- AGT4-25SAT3-128G = $99.99

So these upgrades cost a little over $700 including S&H so Iguess I will get the new I7 3820 and ASUS P9X79 which will replace the i7 920 and the ASUS P6T board and get 2 more sticks of corsair vengeance memory and keep my 2 460 cards

Mine keeps about 100 wu cache for the cpu 8 at a time and 100 wu for the 2 gpu 2 at a time that is 4 wu at a time total for gpu. BOINC keeps it around 100 all the time for the cpu and the gpus.

To run 2 wu change all <count>1</count to <count>.5</count> if you have more than 767 mb of vram such as 1gb vram you can change to <count>.3</count> and it will do 3 wu in your app_info.xml file.

edit app_info
<count>1</count
to
<count>.5</count>
for all of the count entries in the app_info.xml file.
This will do 2 wu instead of 1 and gpu useage will go up.

Unzip the Jason package into default boinc folder
C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu
rename this file MBCuda.aistub and rename it app_info.xml
and that will get you started for doing gpu only work.
Be sure to untick cpu work in your seti account page at setie@home web site.

The xml format used at BOINC and SETI is not standard and in fact if you edit those files with an XML editor probably the result file wont be usable as it will be reformated...

You need one app_version section for each version of the apps you run, the app_info you posted is running only the MB app for cuda so only one app_version section...
If you were using other apps (MB for CPU, AP for CPU or GPU, you will need to add other app_version sections (along with other file references and other sections)

I use xml marker with no problems also xml notepad.
