21) Message boards : Number crunching : AMD APU opencl problem (Message 1963981)
Posted 8 Nov 2018 by Profile AllenIN
Post:
Yes, I have an out dated AMD APU and for some reason it stopped being recognized by Boinc. I've been running it for many years with no problems until I tried to add an additional compatible internal graphics card.
For some reason this combination didn't work and after removing it, the opencl did not work anymore. The log file gives me this error numerous times.

App version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it

I'm hoping that someone has a clue as to what is wrong.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate and the latest Boinc. Also I have the newest version of Catalyst for this APU.

Thanks.....
Allen

Edit:
I just found this file and it might be of some help. It is the stderr.txt file.

"My present AV package (I renewed Kaspersky earlier this year, their AV is the most unobtrusive I've found) just told me my Firefox is hopelessly outdated. I'm still at version 58, because I hate the look of the versions thereafter and can't stand the extensions. Guess what? There are still updates for the add-ons (even though they're called extensions, they aren't). "

Ageless,

Version 58?? Heck, I'm on version 43 on my favorite machine since it's the last to support my favorite Appearance add-on. Avast doesn't like it either!
Keep up the good work and don't give in. I don't run anything by Win7 and will never go to 10. At that point I expect to switch to Linux of one sort or another.

The replica database will be offline until we can restore it from the primary database on tuesday (at the earlies). This will result in slowness of the web site and the scheduler.

It's been over a month since you wrote this....I'm hoping for one heck of a restoration!!

I have an update request on one of my machines that is about 300 megs and for the heck of it I told it to go ahead.

I let it set there for about 15 minutes and it never did download anything. Figuring that I had done something wrong, I rebooted and tried it again, still nothing. I guess they don't really want to update my machine and are just teasing me....ha!

This was a phenomenon I noticed a while back when getting updates from MS directly and when getting updates from my local WSUS server.

When checking for--and downloading--updates from MS, there seems to be a ton of disk activity and CPU usage, as the Update client is scanning all the files on your computer that would be affected by the update, to see if you need portions of it or not. You end up downloading only part of the update because you don't need all of it.

When checking for--and downloading--updates from WSUS, there is minimal disk activity and CPU usage, and the download starts almost right away and begins installing, because it doesn't check the individual files that would be affected, it's just a simple check of "X update is available on the server and is not currently installed on the client machine. Begin downloading update to install on client machine."

Especially with larger updates, when downloading directly from MS, you'll have to let it sit for a while.

Thanks for the great explanation. Never thought of it that way before. Makes sense. Guess I've got a plan for Saturday, where I can keep an eye on it.

I think there's something broken in the update client right now. Had a Win7 box the other night that sat forever showing 0% complete on updates, couldn't seem to get them to download, but when I went to look at detail, they were all there waiting for install ... did a shutdown and everything loaded, eventually ...

Thanks for the info. I didn't leave it running overnight or even for hours, so perhaps it may have downloaded sorta in the blind if I had let it. Might try that, but I really hate to leave anything unattended with MS on the other end.

29) Message boards : Number crunching : How does Boinc decide which WU it will run next? (Message 1809784)

Post:
Thank you all for trying to get my thick head to understand the system.

I guess what I really need to do, now that I have your understanding of the system, is to observe some of the dates and movement of WU's through my systems. Perhaps I have it set to store too many units, but this is not all my fault as I have been stuck with nothing to run on more than one occasion when I had my settings for far fewer wu's.

I will say that I am running some wu's for October currently, while I have wu's due in a week or so just setting there. To me, that seems odd, but as I said, I'll have to do a little studying to see what is really going down.

Thanks again for your kind help.....all of you.

Unless there's a danger of a missed deadline, it runs them in the order they were received from the server. First In, First Out. Simple as that.

If that is the case, and I'm sure it is since you are the one saying so, why does it sometimes stop an in progress WU and run another one that it has just received?

The size of your cache, how often your system is set to check for work, the time it takes to process work, any other projects you might have & their settings, the time your system is able to process work all go in to determining if there is the chance of a missed deadline.

Well in my case, I am only running Seti and I have no fancy settings, but it is not unusual for me to be running for instance, 3 cpu wu's that are due a month away and have some due in two weeks just setting there.

I thought that perhaps Bonic was choosing to run wu's that had already been completed by wingmen and would choose to run them before running first in first out.

Just curious, I'm a bit anal I guess, but does anyone know why Boinc runs WU's in the order that it runs them? You would think that it would run them by due dates, but that is clearly not what it does.

Thanks

And I'm presuming that it will take an act of God for a non-volume licensed, or should I say a non-enterprise licensed individual to acquire such a version, if it's even possible at all? Doesn't leave us end users with many good options after 2020 then, sadly, when are going to get XP'ed. Unless we suck it up and move to 8, to buy a couple more years. I guess the saying is accurate, Resistance is Futile, you will be Assimilated...

Their is always Linux.

I have decided to stay with what I have now. If that becomes an unworkable option in the future....hello linux.

I'm tired of dancing through MS's hoops and I don't like supporting them anyway.
I wonder what the percentages are here at Seti though. Those that took the plunge and those who did not.

Perhaps sometime in the future I will come across some more clues and finally solve this unusual problem.

Process Monitor might be the best option.

Fire it up, run the BOINC installer, then check to see what was happening just prior to the BEX64 error.

Definitely a good idea. Will try it the next time I go hunting...grin

Thanks!

You could check stderrdae.txt in BOINC's data directory if the client had a chance to log the error there.

Did you try 7.6.33?

I didn't even know there was a 7.6.33.

When I try it again, I will check the err file.

Thanks!

Just thought that I would get back to you all with my dismal results after checking out all of the suggestions.

Unfortunately nothing worked and I am back to running the older version of Boinc.
At least I am able to run.

Perhaps sometime in the future I will come across some more clues and finally solve this unusual problem.

Thanks to all for giving it a shot!

One possible solution is to add a start up delay to your cc_config.xml file:

<start_delay>nseconds</start_delay>

I had to do this on one of my crunchers some time ago for much the same reason as you are suffering just now - I think I used a 120 second delay.
The delay gives the drivers time to get going properly before BOINC starts to do its system probing to see what hardware is available.

edit:
Under Windoze 7 the default location of cc_config is c:\ProgramData\BOINC (by default this folder is hidden)

Rob,

That didn't go so well. My c:\ProgramData\BOINC directory doesn't even have a cc_config.xml file in it. Do I need to make one?

Some things are just so darn finicky..guess that's another one I'll have to try and since it's the simplest, I guess I'll try it first.

Thanks!

The most useful link I've been able to find concerning "Problem Event Name:BEX64" issues.
What does event BEX64 mean?

There are some references that BEX stands for "Buffer Overflow Exception" and is somehow related to Data Execution Prevention.
...

Indicates a buffer overflow (/GS) or DEP exception (BEX64 indicates a buffer overflow (/GS) or DEP exception on 64-bit versions of Windows)

I translate that to a couple of programmes interfering with each other, and in this case the BOINC installer comes off second best.

Found another site, and there the issue relates to a programme having issues with extremely long file names on some folders. Remove the folder with the extremely long file name & no more BEX64 errors.

Very odd and interesting. Should I go hunting.....grin Perhaps I should!

Fixing BEX64 error nvcplui.exe

BEX64 NVcplui.exe and nvgames.dll error in manage 3d settings
In process monitor, it showed that the nvcplui.exe was for some reason interacting with these long named folders/directories. Many programs are not designed to recognize or handle long names like the above example and usually will crash. Sure enough that was the problem. I moved all my folders and personal stuff off the desktop and to a different partition (in this case D drive). I then relaunched the application and the manage 3d settings worked perfectly. To test if this was the problem, I put back the items I had moved off the desktop and launched the application again and sure enough it crashed at the manage3d settings.
