21) Message boards : Number crunching : Under Windows Vista, can not make default browser from Boinc work (Message 615187)

Have new computer. Installed Boinc and attached to various projects OK. Then installed Firefox. Set Firefox to be default browser, but when you use Boinc manager to browse project statistics etc, it always loads Internet Explorer. Have booted several times still no luck. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas as to how to fix? My guess is the problem is with Boinc, but am not sure. Boinc Mngr vrs 5.10.13

I believe what you need to do is open up Firefox, click 'tools', then 'options' then at the bottom of the page click the 'click now' buttom. I believe that makes it the default browser.

Tried this before and after your suggestion. No luck. Thanks anyway.
Because double clicking on a HTML file loads Firefox, I am inclined to believe that it is a bug in Boinc!!!

Also, Vista is well known to ignore the "default browser" and still run IE.

Beginning to think you are right, but double clicking on an HTML file does load it into Firefox.

Since it appears that we're going to run out of WU's sometime soon, I added the World Community Project. I have a duo processor and one processor is running World and the other is running SETI. Is there a way I can regulate that or is that just the way it is. Many thanks in advance. I did look at preferences in SETI but didn't see anything that seemed to make sense. Thanks again.

Maybe you can. If you run Windows XP or better!!!! Try Ctrl-alt-del to bring up the Windows Task Mngr. Under processes find the client you want to change. Right click on the process and a menu should open up which I believe on a multi CPU computer will let you set affinity to your processors. I do not have a multi processor machine so have to go from memory of seeing someone else do it. My understanding is that you won't be able to get this to "stick". When the process ends so does the setting for affinity! Let us know. Later. John

Thanks again. I discovered the "name" of the parameter by the process of deduction. Since it started out with .17xxxx, I just changed the first digit to a 9 making it over 90% active and just in case modified the backup as well. It worked as both computers immediately requested additional work. Today being Tuesday the scheduled down time has made contact, at best, sporadic. At least I now have enough work to carry me through. One was on OS/2 the other was on Windows XP. I like the fact this project can be done with multiple operating systems. Later. John

Thanks for your reply. Think I will give your suggestion to edit the uptime parameter a try. Later.

I have gotten a message on one of my computers that in affect says: No work Sent: won't finish in time-computer on 17%, Boinc on 100% Projects gets 50%
I am a Snowbird (a person who goes South to warmer climates in the winter) and I leave two computers at home. It does run 100% after I get back, but Seti is stingy with its allocation - see above message. It seems to me that the powers that be in Seti have out smarted themselves as they can not correctly figure out the computer on time. Yes , I know they are figuring it based on the last 6 months or so....That is the problem. I have moved on to Rosetta which is what I guess they want, but I would like them to fix this glaring error. 28) Questions and Answers : Web site : Seti Team results for OS/2 Warp can be missing (Message 217815)

When I first signed up my stats showed OK? Now in the OS/2 Warp team stats my stats do not show when sorted by recent average results, but will show if I change to Total stats and then back to recent average results. I am "John" with a recent average of about 185. It is not a big deal but does make me go through some additional gyrations to see where I stand.
PS. My stats always show under total results.

I have mutiple computers and I have in the past connected to all of them with the File,Select Computer dialog. Recently two of them have refused to talk to each other in that I am requested to enter a password, which I noticed seemed to be automatically entered before. How can I determine what password it wants or how can I set a new password?

After some research I am able to answer my own question. The file in the Boinc directory (folder) called gui_rpc_auth.cfg (if present) will contain a password for use with that client (on that CPU). The password may also be a blank (CR/LF) and must always be created in plain text.
