Log/Tracking Tool
(Message 1364867)
Posted 19 days ago by rebest
I don't know of any automated method, but if you pull up your application details here on the website for each rig's details, it should give you "number of tasks completed" for each type of work on that machine. Average processing rate and average turn-around time is a recent average and not a total average. Many thanks for the reply and identifying more data sources. Unfortunately, I'm not particularly talented or creative with such things and right now I have very little time to undertake such a project. Tracking a machine's crunching performance by credits is OK, but measures such as RAC are (to borrow a term from economics) a "lagging indicator", meaning that other factors must occur (wingmen and validation) before the credit is actually counted. Also, we have no way of knowing when a tweak behind the scenes in Berkeley has occurred altering the formula for calculating credit. It's happened before. Thanks again. |

Log/Tracking Tool
(Message 1364469)

Greetings, all. Quick question. Have any of our talented Setizens with way too much time on their hands created a logging or tracking tool that does real time, local monitoring and reporting of work units by machine? BoincStats and the other online systems do a great job of reporting credits. But frankly, after doing this for 13 years, I really could care less about credits. By next week, I'll have 25 Million of them. If I could sell them on eBay, I would. I am more interested in a report that neatly details how many work units my rig received and processed by type (MB/AP). When was each WU received, how was it processed (CPU/GPU), how long did it take to complete (CPU/GPU time and clock time), when was it reported. What was the turnaround time? In short, I'm more interested in knowing how to get the most bang for my crunching buck than how I compare to anyone else. All of these variables are tracked by BOINC in one way or another. I could find them by checking each result manually. I'm hoping to find a nice utility that does all that. Some trend lines and graphics would be nice, too. :) Thanks. |

I could yet be proved wrong, but I believe that Kim has played the game better than daddy ever did. Kim has managed to scare the crap out of the entire world. Think about it. How many millions if not billions of dollars have the allies spent scrambling to defend all of southeast Asia from a nuclear attack? All he had to do was shoot his mouth off while holding a birthday party for his grandfather. Hell, he even held a marathon race. Not too shabby for the rookie. Now, the big question is whether the kid is smart enough to see that enough is enough. |

Windows TCP Settings - Follow up - Help with server communication
(Message 1349206)

A follow on question: I switched back to running BOINC 6.10.60 because 1) my downloads were hanging which 2) kicked in the ridiculously long project backoff times in BOINC 7.X.X. The hangups have been largely eliminated by adopting the TCP fix. My transfer rates are glacial, but downloads are now consistent. For those of you running the newer BOINC Windows versions, does the TCP fix help with your backoff situation? |

Many thanks to whomever found the TCP fix and shared it. A few days ago I had 90 downloads hung up on one machine and 147 timeout errors. With the TCP fix, my transfer rates are still painfully slow, but the WUs are getting through. That's what matters. |

OK, this is getting ridiculous. I've got 70+ WUs backed up in my download queue and over half of them have been there since the weekend. The fastest average transfer rate I've seen is 6.5kBps. When I do get a "burst" it lasts about 5 seconds before dropping back. For the past 2 days, I've only had one core (out of 8 CPU and 1 GPU) running. What's the deal? |

George Washington named Britain's greatest ever foe
(Message 1218955)

From the Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/9204961/George-Washington-named-Britains-greatest-ever-foe.html Oh my. With all due and appropriate respect to the "Father of our Country", I don't believe that any military historian in the US would rank Washington so high. The article notes the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown, but it was the relentless harassment by the southern continental army under the direction of Nathaniel Greene that prompted Cornwallis to move his army to Yorktown. Upon the arrival of the French fleet, Washington was determined to assault the British garrison at New York. Fortunately, Comte de Rochambeau convinced Washington that their chances would be better in Virginia. Washington is credited with listening and then changing his mind. It is true that Washington was a truly inspirational figure and he also did a fine job of selecting talented subordinates. Their names are nearly as famous as his. LaFayette, Greene, Glover, Hamilton, and von Steuben. |

I'm not real sure of this but did you updated your video drivers at the same time that this problem started and you let Windows put your monitor to sleep then that's your problem. To fix set Windows to never put your monitor to sleep (this is a well known problem with the latest nvidia drivers). Thanks, Wiggo. You got it! All waiting GPU tasks have cleared. Let's hope the RAC has bottomed out. Thanks again. |

Ethanol
(Message 1209131)
Posted 427 days ago by rebest
I estimate Ethanol is raising the cost of food by at least 30%. The reduction of oil usage may be a quite low percentage after subtracting the fuel used to grow, harvest, distill and transport it. Good God, Bill! We agree. Of course, the reason we agree is that here in the US, the primary source of ethanol is corn. Corn, of course, is an ordinary food staple that has wormed its way into every facet of the American food chain. Truth is, it's a lousy source of ethanol. A 2009 study found that 22 pounds of corn grain is required to produce 1 gallon of ethanol. To fill the fuel tank of a SUV vehicle with corn ethanol requires a total of 660 pounds of corn or food. This is enough corn to feed two people in a developing country for an entire year. Furthermore, to produce corn ethanol, 46 percent more fossil energy is required to produce a liter of ethanol than than is yielded. Oil therefore must be imported to produce ethanol. As a result, the cost to produce 1 liter of corn ethanol is US$1.05 per liter or US$3.95 per gallon. There are other, much much more efficient sources of ethanol. Sugar cane is among the best. This is the cornerstone of Brazil's ethanol industry. Another option is Sweet Sorghum, a drought resistant plant that will grow in soil most other foods crops consider miserable. It's stalk contains a sugary liquid that can that can easily be distilled into ethanol. Oh, and the grain produced by the sorghum plant has been eaten for centuries and would be more than welcome by starving populations. Once the stalks have been pressed and the grain harvested, the remnants can be fed to livestock or burned as fuel to distill the alcohol. You might ask yourself why you've never heard of this or why it isn't a priority to develop this further. Can you say Cargill? Can you say ADM? Can you say Congress? |

Obama's second term.
(Message 1207730)
Posted 431 days ago by rebest
I do have one question that keeps nagging me. The Republican Party has some very bright, dedicated, honest members who genuinely want the best for the entire country. I have many friends and family members who have proudly called themselves Republicans for many years. Now, I don't always agree with them and they don't always agree with me, but they are very good people. They are now divided into two camps. The first (smaller) group have decided to vote for Obama. The economy is improving and they believe that with the notable exception of Afghanistan, his handling of foreign policy and the now defunct "War on Terror" has been good. The fact that Osama now swims with the fishes earns him favorable marks. The second (much larger) group is planning on taking a pass on the Presidential Election entirely. As one friend put it "From a country of over 320 million divided pretty much down the middle, the best the Republican Party can field are Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Mitt Romney?? WTF???" Frankly, this year the Republicans remind me of the 1972 Democrats. |

Ford? Yeah. I own one. '98 Taurus. I bought last year it for my #2 son who now drives it to college. Dull, boring, 6 cylinder, white fleet vehicle I picked up cheap in a State government surplus property auction. Most kids would bitch and moan about being stuck with such an old heap, but everything works, we got it all cleaned up, and my kid loves it. Besides, there was no way in Hell I was going to let a teenager anywhere near my '06 Charger with a 5.7L Hemi!! |
