I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but you should give O&O ShutUp10 a try. I use it on both Windows Pro and Home, and it can be configures to stop automatic driver updates, among other things. https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

I can't speak to specific older versions, but LibreOffice has been able to save as .doc for a very long time.

As for BOINC, if you install the version supplied by your distribution, it can be upgraded with a mouse click. I don't use the version supplied by Mint, I use the version supplied by seti@home. It works perfectly for me.

I understand you aren't comfortable with Linux, but it really isn't the nightmare you're making it out to be. Like you, I'm no fan of the command line. It's very rare for me to need it. I do agree with you that MAC OS is extremely user-friendly.

Because, at the time that I NEEDED to do this, LibreOffice DID NOT have "Save as: .doc" as an option for documents. It does now; but, NOT when I was using Ubuntu 12.04... So, I chose OpenOffice; which DID, and STILL DOES, "Save as: .doc" LibreOffice would open a .doc file; but, WOULD NOT save as .doc.

Further; since you mention Software Manager, I DARE you to try Upgrading BOINC via Software Manager... In Ubuntu, 12.04 and 14.04 I tried; it took another 30 Command Lines, (that Juha helped me with), to alter Software Manager to be able to even see that there were BOINC versions ABOVE 7.0.65 for Linux!!!

I HATE COMMAND LINE!!!! MAC OS X does NOT require the average user to know ANY command line. EVERYTHING is done via GUI and Double Click! NOT Linux!!!

I keep things simple and get about 90% of my software from Mint's Software Manager. Search > double-click > installed.

I'm curious - why did you want to run OpenOffice over LibreOffice? It's my understanding that OpenOffice is practically a dead product. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2913764/openoffice-development-is-looking-grim-as-developers-flock-to-libreoffice.html

I'm glad that you "easily" made the switch to Linux; I STILL have misgivings about Linux!!! The fact remains, that if you want Apache OpenOffice over LibreOffice; you MUST use 30 Command Lines to remove LibreOffice, and another 30 Command Lines to Install OpenOffice!!! I KNOW, I've DONE IT!!! I'm NOT happy that it took 30 Command Lines to do this!!! :-(

UNTIL Linux, (ALL Flavors and Distributions), standardize and use Double Click to Install 3rd Party Programs I AM NOT switching to Linux!!!

I DO; however, HIGHLY recommend MAC OS X as an alternative! They use Double Click to Install ALL Apps and Programs!!!

Whether done through Hackintosh; or, if money permits, buying a real MAC, GET OS X and begin LIVING FREE!!!!! :-)

Most people? Probably. People here in the SETI forums might be a bit different. ;-)

I currently have 15 GPU's crunching for SETI. 13 of them were purchased specifically for that purpose.

@ Fawkesguy,

Look at the line immediately following

<app_version>

In every case, it's an <app_name> - EXCEPT the one you added in red. It'll be

<app_name>setiathome_v8</app_name>

of course.

@ TBar - he quoted your post, which is where the error came from. Please proof-read, or better yet test, before posting.

Richard, thank you for catching that. :-)

I've now got the v8 app and app_info set up on all of my machines, but it seems that only my Windows machine is grabbing v8 WU's. Any idea what might be causing that?

EDIT: Found a typo in my app_info. All good now. :-)

Yes, I've tried a few times. I even tried renaming it to "setiathome_8.00_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu and changing the version number to 800 in app_info, thinking maybe it didn't like the 8.04/804. No luck.

Where would I find the necessary files for Linux?

I'd suggest the files from Beta. I'm not sure if the files on Main are the Updated ones or the OLD 8.00 version. You Really want the 8.04 version...

The 32-bit version;

I copied "setiathome_8.04_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" to my setiathome directory and edited my app_info. I don't run the screen saver so I only used that one file. When I restart BOINC, I get the following error in the event log:

Fri 01 Jan 2016 07:56:34 PM EST | SETI@home | Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform
Fri 01 Jan 2016 07:56:34 PM EST | SETI@home | [error] State file error: bad application name

Also after restarting BOINC, the application file itself disappears from the directory. The file permissions are correct, and the file name in app_info matches the actual file name. Not sure what I'm doing wrong or what I've missed. Below is my app_info.xml (new sections in red)

Any help would be appreciated.

For CUDA - those files are not available yet?

Also, is there a download area I can check in to see when files are added?

Question to those who have managed a successful transition to Linux, how many of you are DUAL GPU crunchers and how did you go with the driver installations.??

This is what is stopping me from crossing over from the Win 7 to Linux.

Regards

Hi tazzduke,

I recently converted 5 of my 6 crunchers from Windows to Linux Mint 17.2 and installed Nvidia drivers using the sgfxi scripts. You can read more about the scripts here: http://smxi.org/docs/sgfxi-manual.htm

X needs to be stopped prior to installation.

To install, you run (as root):
cd /usr/local/bin && wget -Nc smxi.org/sgfxi && chmod +x sgfxi && sgfxi

and just follow the prompts.

For future driver upgrades, you simply run:
sgfxi

It couldn't have been any easier. Installation gave me everything I needed. I'm able to run CUDA and OpenCL apps without issue. All of my Linux crunchers have multiple GPUs and BOINC had no problem detecting and using them.

Mike, why not try the sgfxi script I've suggested a few times? I have 5 Linux Mint 17.2 machines, and using the script, I have installed Nvidia drivers successfully every time. No linking of files, no issues whatsoever. OpenCL and CUDA work perfectly. I'm running BOINC 7.2.42 in my home directory. I have no experience using it with ATI cards, but it is my understanding that it works with ATI as well.

Take a look at my suggestion above. I'm running Mint 17.2, which I believe is based on Ubuntu 14.04. Installation took 5 minutes. Both CUDA and OpenCL work fine. No other downloads, no linking files. It has worked perfectly on all 5 of my Linux machines. Might be worth a shot.

The nvidia runfile for 7.5 refuses to run because it notices
nvidia_uvm is a loaded module, and quits.
This on Ubuntu 14.04.

I updated /etc/default/grub to boot in text mode
and then 'sudo update-grub'. So I get a text window
and no graphics. But no joy anyway.

I don't know how to get past this issue.
google queries have been no help. So far.

Baiteh,

You might want to consider taking a look at sgfxi. I use the sgfxi script for installing my Nvidia drivers. It automates the entire installation and upgrade process. I highly recommend it.

It has worked flawlessly for me on several machines.
