1) Message boards : Number crunching : Illegal fundraising????? (Message 1567971)

I have a question for Mark.....

Did the complaint about your fundraising come from someone officially affiliated with SETI at home or another cruncher?

Since it all goes into the same purse at SETI I don't see a reason for the complaint.

SETI does it's official fundraising in December if I remember correctly. How can a fundraiser in September interfere with that?

Mark.............

I remember well your many battles to bring "The Frozen One" online and your quest for the highest overclock. I didn't think you would achieve your goal, simply not possible was my feeling. And when you refrigerated the CPU I thought you had completely lost your mind. But you succeeded and the machine has been crunching for years.

So I humbly offer my congratulations on the build and my condolences on the loss.

Curious as to why I had to change .......

<cpu_usage>0.25</cpu_usage>

In order to have 4 wu running on the CPU.
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Lunatics Windows Installer v0.42 Release Notes (Message 1555785)
Posted 41 days ago by Profile Geek@PlayProject donor
I would like to use the "service installation" during the installation of the 0.42 software. I have the following......

Windows 8.1 (64 bit)
Nvidia driver 340.52
Nvidia GPU 780M
Boinc version 7.2.42

Would the problem where the GPU is not recognized rear it's ugly head or would the GPU be usable?

Thanks in advance.

I wonder when the validators will get around to these three work units.

Seems I have been looking at them a long, long time.

I have decided to add my opinion to this thread. For what little weight that has.

I was outraged when I read the original post here. The arrogance involved for one to believe that they speak for everyone here is incredible.

Then to go over David Anderson's and Eric's head with the complaint?

How would you feel if someone verbally attacked your first born son? Same thing here. You cannot expect a sudden willingness for them to take up your cause.

We would be well advised to remember..... Boinc is the only part of this project with funding. SETI is here to provide a test bed for Boinc where every aspect of SETI is extreme. Data base size, network traffic, everything is at extreme limits that no other project could provide. Is SETI worth the headache to Boinc? Some I dare say would argue that SETI is expendable. But I digress.....

Let's hope the harm done with the original post is fleeting and that David Anderson, Eric and all the rest if the program scientists can put it behind them and work to improve Boinc.

9) Message boards : Number crunching : app_config question (Message 1491768)
Posted 186 days ago by Profile Geek@PlayProject donor
I have been trying to configure an app_config file.

Question..........Is there a way to pass a cmdline to the GPU app but not the CPU app using the app_config file? Such as a cmdline to AP GPU but not AP CPU app.

Is this possible?

Thanks Claggy,

Some where along the time of the AP outage I must have made some changes. I have reverted to a clean Lunatics 0.41 install. Many work units were re-issued back to me. Looks like I lost some though.

I will run 0.41 for a while and let things work themselves out.

I have 3 of the new AP work units fail with this error. All 3 AP work units were issued in this latest batch that started going out after the AP shutdown.

All my previous errors I can account for but I have no idea on these 3 work units.

Nothing changed with my setup!

Now I look and see many wu with March deadlines so obviously I was wrong. I failed to realize that many are still content to work 24+ hours on one AP work unit.

And excluding the top 500 computers from the limits would just be wrong!

I have been checking my AP work that finally got validated today because somebody finally returned their work. It's easy to see who has been hoarding work as ALL AP work should have been returned by now from a 200 work unit limit. Any outstanding AP work has been hoarded by using various techniques discussed here. Some 56K AP work still out in the field as of now.

Much work is being re-issued because my wingman was late returning work. Great waste of resources just to build up a gigantic cache.

Take a look and take names! Perhaps Berkely will put some meaningful limits that can be enforced by them when work continues. We can always hope!
17) Message boards : Number crunching : Rescheduling - good practice if applied properly (Message 1479074)
Posted 215 days ago by Profile Geek@PlayProject donor
Although I believe the current work limits to be low, I would not reschedule any work I have, even if I could. The SETI servers have got me pretty much dialed in as far as estimated time to complete a task. Rescheduling work would mess this up.

I would like to see the current limits set by SETI to be double what is currently.

For those who do reschedule work I would prefer that it not be done as it reportedly screws with credits awarded. However as long as work is not aborted and is processed and returned to the project before the deadline there remains very little grounds for objections.

In short, I am in favor of getting the work properly crunched and reported. Credit granted is secondary as far as I am concerned. Science is my primary goal here.

The web page is exactly as you describe.

It is very difficult for me also. Fortunately I can increase magnification and it helps. But it's sure to bring on a headache.
