With the limit of 1 WU my crunchers will be out of work for a long time and my RAC will drop like a rock.

Juan, the daily quotas are separate for CPU and GPU and for S@H v6, v7 and AP. Check the application details on your computer's details page.

I see something on odd on my validated v6 results. They show received and returned dates in May.

I was surprised when I found one, a GPU task, on my tasks tab. I came the website and found 2 GPU and 1 CPU task with download errors. Flipped over to this forum and found this thread, so I'm not the only one.

I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. Now I've got just over half a days worth in my GPU cache, so I can wait a bit longer before panicing the next time things fall over.

That worry is the main reason ] haven't bought a 2nd GPU, even though I sized my MB & power supply for another. Can't see spending money to buy worries.
When this thread opened, I started thinking about it again but Claggy clarified things for me. I don't see any logic in allowing someone with a fairly weak Intel GPU and a GT240 to have 200 GPU tasks but restrict someone with 2 690's to only 100.

Good to hear from you, Matt. The colocation arrangement has worked well for us.

Good luck on the projects and have a good trip!

Can it be determined from looking at his pc, drivers etc. what could be causing such havoc? My last Nvidia card was a 4600Ti back like 2002-4(?), so I haven't a clue whether his card's driver is the culprit or not?

Maybe. Post a link to that computer or post his user number, and some of the knowledgeable folks will take a look.

I think you're right about CNET. I think I took the first search hit from a site name I recognized. Won't do that again and I'm inclined to block that site. Think I commented recently about how disappointed I was when I went to their site. I used to use it a lot but have not used it much in recent years. It has real1y deteriorated. I'll pickup 7-Zip from one of the suggested sites later today.

This is starting to sound similar to an issue I am having with my Gmail in Firefox. When loading an e-mail done in HTML an error message will occasionally pop up about a script perhaps hanging and occasionally causing Firefox to crash. I was dealing with a Google support tech and we found that Mozilla said to go into the setup and extend the timeout for scripts. Please have patience, I'm working from my memory here and don't remember the exact specifics. I made the change and it seemed to help just a little. Firefox does not crash quite as much.

Perhaps there is a setting similar in IE that would extend the timeout. That would give web pages a little longer to load.

Thanks, Siran, I have been unable to find a comparable setting in IE11. The problem continues, so I test drove Chrome yesterday. Didn't like it and found no easy to change the settings and ran out of patience, so I'm back to IE11.

The adventure continues:
1. Can't install GoodShop or GoodSearch because it thinks I'm using Mozilla, which they don't support. To report the problem, they want me to use Microsoft mail and I've made another blunder and lost the file with my Microsoft password. Will try again to get the password reset, but I've got some other things that are more pressing.

2. After some Windows updates yesterday, Windows blocks File Manager from loading with this message:

"Runtime Error!

Program: C\Windows\File Manager\FileManager.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information." :<)

Have run Windows Update twice a day to see if there's a fix.

3. Had a problem with BoincTasks 1.58 and BOINC 7.2.42x64. I found a counter-intuitive workaround so I don't have to look at BOINC and Fred traced the problem to a change in 7.2.42. He put a fix in the next release.

4.The new computer number at SETI resulted in very high time estimates. The PU v7 tasks are now almost right, but the cpu estimates are still high. All my CPU tasks are running in high priority mode, and I can't get many AP CPU tasks with a 10 day cache setting. Have worked through all but two of the CPU shorties, so when it starts the others they have longer deadlines, so it may drop out of High Priority mode. The AP CPU time estimates are very high so I can't get more of them.

5. Spent a lot of time today getting rid of malware. I think it loaded when I installed 7zip. It downloaded a lot of junk with the installer regardless of my saying no to everything it wanted to download. It switched my default search setting to something called conduit despite my setting in Windows to block programs from changing the search provider. It installed something called search provider which changed the setting back to Conduit when I changed it to Yahoo or Google. I deleted everything I could find and flushed the recycle bin. McAfee didn't find any more but Malware bytes found 18 more under obscure names. Uninstalled 7zip just in case. It was always okay before I had to get the latest version. Will find another zip program tomorrow, then catch up on other chores.

I'm getting timeouts on various websites with this version of IE. I tried putting this site on compatibility mode, but no improvement. Maybe it is my internet connection or something else at my end.

Is it all websites, random websites, or just a few/one specific website?

Has happened here, EfMer, and Newegg today. Think there were more. I haven't spent much time elsewhere.

Classic Shell has lots more settings including a classic look and feel for Internet Explorer. I use a 2 column start menu.

Thanks again, OzzFan.
.
Just so we're talking about the same thing, did you add Classic Shell or Start 8 so that you have a Start Menu, or are you talking about adding/pinning things to the Start Screen?

I'm using Classic shell. It was of the ones I downloaded in advance.

Are you using the "Metro" (which Microsoft is officially calling the "Windows 8 New UI") Internet Explorer or the "Desktop" Internet Explorer? Because as if to make matters worse, Microsoft actually has two different versions (discounting the fact that 64bit Windows has both 64bit IE and 32bit IE as well), and a lot of people have issues with the Metro version of IE.

Think I'm using 64 Bit IE, or at least I will be. I may have been inconsistent before I created the Desktop shortcut. The shortcut I created is for "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe". I'll check file associations.

There are a couple ways to add items to startup:

Press the Start button and type "shell:startup" (without the quotes), and as soon as you start typing, the Search feature automatically comes into view in the Start Screen - this is the same Search feature previously found in Windows 7's Start Menu which makes it easy to launch applications simply by typing their name.

Thanks, it worked and I have added the two items I neeed.

I've been using Windows 8.1 since shortly after it's release and I have to say that I really like it. I, too, hate the Start Screen, so I've begun placing shortcuts on my Desktop so I can stay out of the Start Screen as much as possible. I agree with you and others that it was a very bad move by Microsoft to force everyone into this new interface that was clearly designed for tablets and phones, even if you weren't running on one.

Certainly agree. The packaging bit about how to get started shows the touch screen method first and then the mouse method. I have yet to find out to add something to the start menu or desktop. I need to add MSI Afterburner to startup because I need to start it manually just after start up or my GPU will overheat without my custom fan curve. I can't even create a shortcut and miss the right click method. And I'm getting a lot of Internet Explorer "This page can't be displayed" messages and have to refresh. I just got one when I tried to preview this post and had to do it over again. Had that some with IE 8 but lowering my network speed to 10 MBS fixed that.

NOTICE: A bit off topic... :)

Questions about Win 8.1 are okay - I have a lot of them, and others are welcome to add theirs. I'll change the thread title to reflect that.
My question now is: Has MS backed up and allowed booting directly to the classic shell and allowed us to do the things we now do in XP or 7? I seem to remember that in classic shell, only 1 application program could run at a time vs I run no less then 2 applications at a time in 7 now. :)

I think the current release fixes those issues.
Win 8.1 just booted into classic shell for me. Don't like having to use a password or pin for my id but don't see a way to avoid it. And I'm currently running Internet Explorer, BOINC, BoincTasks, TTrottle, MSI Afterburner, antivirus scan and no telling what Windows is running. And you can have more than one maximized.

I'm still exploring menus and tweaking settings to improve the appearance and usability. and it looks like that will go on for days.

BTW, Win8 is fine. With Classic Shell it looks the same as XP and Win7.

Yep, I have 208 tasks in progress. Love it. I'm on No New tasks to work that down. That was before I merged the two computer numbers, and the count stayed the same.

Thread Title change.

Installed Win 8.1 on first try, have loaded Classic Shell, Nvidia drivers and BOINC and attached to Seti. Opt apps come next. Then a lot of other apps.

Many thanks to all that helped me. Will probably have some questions with this goofy OS.

You are getting cpu tasks for AP so prefs are set okay. What makes you suspect cc-config? You can post ift if you want, but first I'd check the app-info.xml file to make sure it has the section for S@Hv7 cpu tasks. If in doubt, I'd rerun the Lunatics installer and pay careful attention to what is selectd.
