...one of them twice as one place can't be done in one stop.

...errrm, not sure how stopping there twice will help. Do you mean two trips to one place?

Good morning Julie, Mike, lurkers.

For any of you lucky enough to have a defined benefit pension, a warning. If you defer them they do not (generally) accumulate for a better rate when claimed. This misunderstanding has cost me about two years of payouts. Also deferred (US) Soc Sec stops accumulating at age 70. Not knowing that has cost us something too. Oh well.

Ping!ing with not enough time to read every thread before taking a shower and heading out.

Showering after pinging after heading out and in again.

Seti computing has been turned off here for a while due to overheating in the heat wave. Now that has gone I can restart the background tasks. And not a moment too soon as my RAC is looking pretty sick.

... but the electrician would probably say I have to rewire the whole house ...

Maybe not. I can't remember the US NEC (it's been 25 years since I last did wiring there, but at that time you could leave knob and tube in place if it was of sufficient gauge and passed the insulation tests). Current UK code (17th ed) has some grandfather clauses for existing wiring - partly since we changed a lot of rules for EU compatibility.

...some of the outlets aren't even accessible behind furniture...

Maybe put new ones more conveniently and disconnect the others without physical removal? And do the whole thing piecewise to spread the cost and aggravation? I upgraded my 1965 installation over about 15 years, recently culminating in a new board fitted by a licensed tech who was amazed at the good insulation test value (28 megohms) for such "old" wiring. That 1965 stuff was done on the same principle over the original 1938 (VIR in EMT) some of which is still physically there but all now disconnected.

...Occasionally they have spotted a serious accident in the small hours of the morning when drivers and passengers are incapacitated and haven't been able to call 999, and the emergency services have been alerted immediately...

Similar thing happened to me on I-95 in Connecticut. I had a blowout at 75 in the LH lane (well, everyone else in all three busy lanes was doing 75 so it seemed safer to go with the flow). I was very impressed with the way the surrounding drivers immediately moved to give me more space ahead, behind and at the side - see that happening in the UK LOL. With such cooperation I got the car to the RH emergency strip, pulled way over half onto the grass and started to change the tire. Within 3 minutes a tow truck pulled up offering to help. I asked how much and the operator said it was provided by the State for free - getting people moving again was cheaper than cleaning up the situation when they were struck by inattentive drivers (!!). The tow trucks just cruised up and down all day and were dispatched using CCTV all along the major routes.

Congrats, Celt. Well beeped.

Square Dancing tonight. Cocktail Party tomorrow. BBQ Sunday.
Almost as much of this pleasure as I'll be able to stand.

In between I have to do some fixups ready for my elec inspection Tuesday.

This is just the abnormal stuff, in between routine visits to relatives in hospital etc.
