Winning during a rare logon at one of my farm to reset a user's password.

...which reveals I really should do something about that avatar :)

Morning Julie, I hope your day
goes well. No sleep for me,
I am still working on my new puter box.

Morning Celt, must be nearly daylight there :)

I am running Win 8,
I'll put home preme'
Win 7 on tomorrow.
Beep

Good move, Celt! :-)

Win 7 Pro has better Networking tools and controls; however, for most people Win 7 Home Premium is just fine... Both are better than Win 8!

+1!

All the new laptops are what they call "wide screen", but I call it "short screen" because actually they just cut off the height. Often with spreadsheets, seeing more rows can be better than seeing more columns. So I have to buy 2nd hand laptops from ebay to get the 4:3 aspect ratio. (Win.)

Hello again. Posting to see what my RAC is after the road trip. Internet access was flaky but I got a lot of WU done and uploaded them when I got home Monday (before the outrage).

I must say 300 MB per second average is very impressive for data to be transferred to media.

Certain religious groups - you know who you are - promote celibacy for their "brightest" adherents.

Looks like a program for breeding down to me.

Winning after walking home from dealership (well, there were buses and tube trains involved too, but no planes).

Posting before driving to the dealership to get the inverter cooling pump changed out.

Didn't look for a 2nd hand part as Toyota has 'continuous improved' (=redesigned) them for better reliability.

Didn't try to fit it myself because they are a pig to bleed without an 'Air Lift' which I'm not going to get for the one job.

The Power Split Device (see diagram) is a three shaft fixed gearset very like a differential but no two shafts have the same ratio. The HV DC bus (red and black lines) transfers power bidirectionally between MG1 and MG2 Inverters, with the HV Battery 'balancing the budget'. The regeneration, energy storage and ability to run in EV mode are certainly important, but the electrical power transfer MG1<->MG2 is crucial - one way presents the ICE with low/intermediate gearing to the wheels, the other gives overdrive. The orange lines are 3 phase variable frequency (and at low speeds PWM). Detailed explanation of the Prius drive train.

The four-quadrant Inverters handle up to 33 kW which is why they (and the MGs) need cooling. A similar configuration was tried before WW2 but requires computer control and 21st century semiconductors and rare earth magnets (in the MGs) to be practical. Much of tech progress is actually based on better materials.

@David
Sounds like fun, but I can't see the picture. I tried right-click, open image in new tab and it wants me to sign into Google Drive, which I don't have (I think).

Sorry you cannot see the pic - not sure why that would be. Embedding pics hosted on Google drive is a bit tricky, but I can see it from another computer without logging into Google. This url (same one as I used for the img tag) should get it.

Today I disassembled the front of my 2001 Prius "for practice". Dropped the front bumper and pulled a headlight unit to get access to the HV inverter cooling pump which has failed (see pic). I wanted to know whether it was really a DIY job or whether I'd have to take it to a shop. Seems I will be able to swap it myself.

Of course I haven't sourced a replacement pump yet, so I had to put it all together again so I can drive carefully - minimising use of the traction motors and watching the inverter temp on a dashboard mounted ODB2 scanner - to collect another pump when I find who has one. No parts stores open on Sundays in the UK. No parts stores with on line catalogs in the UK. Stock check on the web? maybe sometime aroung 2050.

The black thing is the pump. One hose goes off to the left, the other is hidden behind the pump, so that clip will be fun to release. The orange cables are 3 phase 300v (max ~70A) from the 4 quadrant inverter (above) to the traction motor/generator (below). Yes, this thing could power a house with no trouble (once I get the pump working again of course).

Good morning everyone. Been a little distracted...

The (4 quadrant) inverter on my 2001 Prius is overheating - traced to a failed electric cooling pump. Till I can get another, I can drive it, but carefully watching dash mounted OBD2 scanner for inverter temp.

Very strange feeling driving to AVOID using the electric part of the hybrid (including regen braking). Usually of course it's the other way around.
