Why do you wan't to use more as one instance ? - The boinc client starts a sepereate seti app for each CPU you have, and also caching WUs.

As I have written before: I want to crunch WUs, but want to go online once a day ... ;) I have not enough money to do it more often ... :(

Maybe some person do not have a flatrate and can stay online all day ;?
In my case one boinc client is ready after nearly 3 hours. Although I have edited my preferences, that it should download WUs for a day, it is ready in such a short time ... :( With the seti1-client I used 3 of them and one boinc-client, so they were ready after 24 hours ... ;) So it is not so expensive to run them ... But now I can only start two clients, every further client just finish immediately with an error message like
"GUI RPC bind failed: -1
gstate.init() failed: -180" ... :(

You can setup the WU cache on the website on the general preferences up to 10 days. So your client connects every 10 days to the boinc servers.

GUI RPC is very problematic with two boinc clients. With luck, the second boinc will connect to the alternate port. But if the bindings will be successfull, you can not manage the second via the gui, because the GUI connects only to the second if the primary not anwsering.

So I recommend you to set your work cache higher.

Thanks, Dotsch, for the quick answer ... :) I have running two clients ATM without any further problem, but if I want to start a 3rd one, I get the above mentioned error message ... :( And two clients are still to fast ... :(
I have changed my prefs to 1.5 day, so I will wait to see, if this helps ... ;)

Just for the record: I had to reset and to detach the project first to get it started ... :( At first, I got only something like "already attached to project ...", but after resetting, detaching and then reattaching the project, boinc started downloading an new WU. But now I get only "temporarily failed download of <client name>" respectively "temporarily failed download of <WU name>" ... :(
But a progress anyhow ... ;)

Good !
Berkeley has a problem in the moment, so no up- or downloads are posible :

O.K., thanks for the answer. My WU download finished meanwhile, whereas my s@h client still tries to download ... :( I will stop it then, and wait 'til tomorrow morning ... ;)

Strange, looks like you have lot your attachment to the project.
Can you please re attach this computer to the project.

Via commandline? Or from my "Your account" page?

Best via the command line (boinc_client -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu $PUT_IN_YOU_ACCOUNT_KEY) or within the boinc manager.

To add: My boinc client is running on a partition with 2.3 Gigs of free space under Mandriva 2005. The whole partition is 6.4 Gigs of size. It is not a root- or a home partition, but a seperate one. I have removed nearly 500 MB of files there to get it run, but to no avail ... :(

Have you updated your client prefs, after the change of the values on the web site ?
Can you try to set "Use no more than XX% of total disk space" to a high value, for example 80 or 90 %.

Thank you for your quick answer :)
Now I get "2005-12-04 15:27:56 [---] Starting BOINC client version 5.2.8 for i686-pc-linux-gnu

Are your disk preferences OK ? - (Your account / View or edit general preferences / Disk and memory usage)

This are the defaults :

Use no more than 1 GB disk space
Leave at least 0.1 GB disk space free
Use no more than 50% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use no more than 75% of total virtual memory

If you here have wrong settings, the boinc client won't donwload anything.

I have got the same problem as dahls, but whereas he got "No disk space (YOU must free 158.5 MB before BOINC gets space)." I got "No disk space (YOU must free 23.5 MB before BOINC gets space)."
To add: My boinc client is running on a partition with 2.3 Gigs of free space under Mandriva 2005. The whole partition is 6.4 Gigs of size. It is not a root- or a home partition, but a seperate one. I have removed nearly 500 MB of files there to get it run, changed my prefs to 0.01% of total disk space, but to no avail ... :(
Is it looking for whatever reason on another partition for this space?
Any help would be really appreciated :)

But I have not an ADSL connection, just a dialup, so I have to pay per call ... And I find it really annoying, when I get only "error" messages like "no work for project" (or the like). I am really thinking about leaving the BOINC project because of the inconveniences I had the last couple of weeks ... :(

Hi@all,
what''s going on with boinc? First I got the message "server shut down for maintainance" or the like, then I got something like "no scheduler responded" for days, when running my boinc_3.19_i386-pc-linux client under SuSE 9.0. Is this because of the change of the clients or something else ? I seem to find nothing on that theme here ... Because of my dialup I have to pay every try to get new data for my boinc_client ... :(
And is there a possibility to notify the users to change the client if it is too old/there is a newer version available?
TIA
Thomas.

@SethW,
try chmod 700 (rwx------) boinc_ as user who is running the client . This should work ... ;)
