Okay, I notice that most people around here don't even care. Yet I do. As do some that I know that emailed Neil and urged him to put a PayPal part on his websites for signatures.

May I point everyone to the little fact that he has 10GB as a limit per month? May I point you further that 10% of that limit has already been used up in the past 3 days?

So for everyone using a neat signature from http://seti.mundayweb.com (Classic Seti) and http://seti2.mundayweb.com (Boinc Seti), may I ask you to not distribute his site to all your friends, relatives, loved ones and muli-fellow crunchers?

For if you do, all signatures will go on black for the rest of this month within 10 days.

Please guys, I am trying to set up a mirror for Neil. But my server won't be up until the start of August 2004.

I am really hoping someone else here will give Neil a mirror. Something that takes the load off of his site. Someone gentleman enough even to not ask for money, just help out.

Who?

Im sure some of us would be willing to host the script for ourselves if we had some way to access it. But i dont think my cable company would like me having hundereds of people access my server for something like this

It seems folks are looking for "badges", as that was a function lost when moving to Seti BOINC....

the "best" solution might be to just add this data to the left hand column in forums.. It already has "joined" and the other data is most likely in the same DB record (credits, RAC, team), so an additional DB fetch wouldn't be needed! No fancy gif's, but hey, if everyones data is always shown and it cuts down on server load, why not?

If this is something that he can set up via ssh on a Mandrake 10 system, I can give him access and he can do whatever he needs with it. All it does now is run boinc - I don't use it for anything else. It's not a top of the line system, but as long as I wouldn't be bearing the whole load, it shouldn't be a problem as long as it specs out to be able to do what he needs.

A little general info about it, maybe to help him see if it could be of any help to him:

-P4 1.6 with 128 MB of ram (don't have any more spare ram sitting around).
-I remounted /var to an empty partition with 2.4GB of free space (just to make sure it had some room on it before I even offered).
-runs 24/7 with 24/7 internet connection via adsl (250 up / 1500 down).
-My dsl has a dynamic ip address, but I already have an account with dyndns.org for remote access, which updates the ip address within 60 seconds of a change. As long as the dyndns.org address is used, it routes to my system regardless of my current ip address from my ISP.
-I have already set up my router and confirmed that I can redirect a port to this system for ssh access, which does work coming in via the dyndns.org address. And of course http port routing is no problem.
-I have no bandwidth limitation from my isp, and the connection is quite reliable. Of course, it is thunderstorm season in the southern US, so temporary power and internet outages are always a possibility. My UPS system will only power the computer in question for about 10 minutes.

If it sounds like it could be of any help to him, I can make that system available to him right away. If he needs something a little more than that, I might can still shuffle some stuff around and get him in somewhere, but it will take me a little time.

Replacing badges with an optional and personalized signature that displays team affiliation or whatever the user wants to include (with a size limit) is an elegant solution I'd like to see implemented...cc

Another temporary idea (though it limits how personalized they are) would be to remove the pictures from them. Looking through just this thread, it seems like ones with pictures use up ~10-20K of data, while the plain color only ones use only a tad over 1K. Switching over from images to just colors would pretty much garuntee at least a 10x decrease in bandwidth from downloading new pictures (seems like that should be where the majority of bandwidth goes), which I'm sure he could use until other mirrors are available.

Of course, since Berkeley isn't updating any stats at the current time anyway, you could also just remove the stats and keep your picture loading from its original site - taking all the burden off mundayweb.com for the time being. Who knows, he may have more bandwidth than he could possibly know what to do with before Berkeley starts validating again anyway.

He has put one up since 4 minutes after I started this thread. ;)

Thanks everyone who's been offering help so far. Your best route of help is emailing Neil on admin@seti2.mundayweb.com
Last I spoke to him, he had gotten one offer for a mirror that way.

I was poking at the person saying he'd be glad to donate. :)

When we use an image, it isnt still hosted where we originally placed it? I wonder if he could modify his script so that we need to supply a properly sized image and host it ourselves, or add that option for those of us with the ability to host our own image.

I'm going to show my total ignorance here, but is there a way using html code to overlay 2 objects?

The images I previously used for my sig through Neil's site come from my own system (and are the same size as the sig), but I have turned all that off because of it being a bigger drain on his bandwidth.

So, back to my question. Is there a way I can set up the html in the sig info on setiweb to get an image from my system and the data from Neil, then overlay them instead of showing them side by side?

That is hardly a problem with other opensource projects these days...

If he GPL's it or somesuch (maybe even a more restrictive license?) and posts it, people can utilize it on their own servers, taking the load off his server. I know I'd run something like that locally just for me and members of my team if I could. :-)
