Are we still looking for ET ?

Looking at the server’s acquisition and splitter tapes status at http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sstatus.html it looks like we are all crunching data that have been analysed many many times, I guess…

Is S@H still a project searching for ET signal or is it just for numbers cruncher’s competition ?
Isn’t it a waste of energy to “ stupidly ” crunch units for nothing else than numbers ? Should we use our processing power to some more “ useful ” humanitarians Projects like fighting AIDS ? At least until we can listen on other part of the sky, different frequencies, etc.

There are ten times more post in the number crunching section than SETI@home science. I was even planning to built myself a “ supercomputer ” dedicated to SETI, but what’s the point, really.

Or perhaps I am wrong.

Cheers
Marc from France

Google Translate for --LITTLE SUN--
I hope which I it correctly understood. > if it like that is can one him only quite give to lower it would be indeed > the same working units by the computers to hunt only it > also like that senselessly always unfortunately is, who with many projects in the medical range commercial one > interests of companies behind it puts, one at first sight not at all > easily erkennt.Und I it honestly said does not see companies to help > their development costs since within this range enough money
becomes earned >! > greeting guido

The short answer to your question is 'certainly'-
The search has been in progress since before people figured out how to build a fire.
The electric box on my desk is only a recent developement- Refined? yes. Effective? possible. Successful? not yet.
There are people as I tap this keyboard who are standing on hillsides in Ecuador watching the full moon and searching for ET.
In Siberia, where this time of year no night sky exists, people are looking for ET into the wilderness.
Twenty miles off an African coast, a shrimpboat's helmsman scans the horizon while the crew sleeps- looking.
In New York City- where it's 2AM , comotion and intensity in a sumptuous clot of humanity comingle while the search is underway underground in the subway system and up in Harlem and down in Chelsea- and way down at Ground Zero.
Millions of others across this world who dont know a computer from a toaster oven are looking for ET.
There are as many methods as there are searchers. In addition to the computer resources availiable, my personal ET search includes a crimson flamboyan in high summer bloom, an old wooden bench, a palm fringed beach, and a soprano saxophone- a fat moon helps.
The search for ET is every inhabited world's oldest and only universal religion- practiced everywhere by most everyone.
From cradle to grave, we need the human consciousness to prevail. It's all that keeps us alive and kicking.
We look for ET because we know that in the long haul, humanity has no other choice. As we die, so will the Earth's ability to sustain us.
The day will certainly come, because we have all learned that nothing lasts forever, when it will be time to move outward.
Warm up that coffee mama cause I'm comin' upstairs.
The race of man will expand into the universe, or it will perish- because this planet will support humanity for a fixed number of days and not one day longer. This world's future might one day be sealed by appearance of an errant rock, purely by serendipity. Who knows?
So we are going to be leaving here and we are looking for ET to reassure us that there is a place besides Earth where there are others. And as we come to find there exists others, we will know there exists a million elsewheres where we might spread the human consciousness, where we must expand, where we will someday go.
Because we already know that should everybody stay here- then all that is humanity must certainly die here.
And nobody wants that...cc

Yes, we're still searching. Contrary to popular belief, SETI (nor SETI 2 on BOINC) is recycling old WUs over and over and over and over and over just to keep CPUs busy. Many WUs have only recently been recorded, and need to be analyzed. Admittedly, we've searched most of the sky available to Aericiebo 3+ times, but one does not say for sure if a signal is alien in orgin with only one or two passes.

I can't find any similar pages on BOINC, but SETI 1 has a page (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/process_page/) that gives the current progress of the project.
