your problem was likely the drivers not being properly installed.

you will have to install drivers with an nvidia card as well.

Thanks for your response. I google and downloaded the drivers from AMD, followed the example. tried it a few times with different settings.

I know you are expert with those Nvidia, and recommendations?

nvidia drivers are pretty easy to install on ubuntu thanks to the PPA that the Ubuntu team has made available. i would definitely recommend an nvidia card if you are already on linux, so you can use the special app that's 2-3x faster than the stock apps.

it just comes down to how much you want to spend.

personally i think the rtx 2070 is the sweet spot for performance and power efficiency. but the cheapest i've seen them is around $420 on the used market (500+ new).

you might also look at the GTX 1660ti/RTX 2060 since they show promising results also in the $300-350 range

and a GTX 1060 6GB is probably comparable to your previous RX 580, you should be able to get one for $120-150ish used.

really anything in the 10-series or newer is going to perform well with the special app.

I found a EVGA GTX 1080 for $85 on ebay used. the guy had 5, so I think that is a bargain. In the meantime I have a Geforce 710, and the drivers were easy to install.

that's more than a bargain. that's a price i would be highly skeptical of.

1080's go for like $300-350 usually, did you mean 1060?

Indeed... plenty of fakes out there. As noted in the article, the latest (Windows-only) GPU-Z will detect fakes directly, but you don't need that in Linux... just do the CUDA cores and RAM check through NVIDIA X Server Settings, which is installed along with your NVidia driver suite.

weird. when I searched, that listing didn't come up at all.

but hell, there's no obvious red flags, seller has low feedback, but it's marked with ebay's money back, so I'm in for 2 LOL.
