To what "localhost connection problem" are you referring to? I have not heard of such an animal. My BOINC seems to connect to my localhost just fine.

The usual answer goes along the lines of:

Was the Manager (GUI) set to shutdown the client (the hidden, working, part of BOINC) last time you closed it?
Have you restarted the client since that closedown?

Unless the client is running, there's nothing for the Manager to connect to.

In most Linux distributions, the client is set to run automatically at system startup, as a system service. There are ways that you, as a system administrator, can restart the service (possibly involving sudo): I'm not a Linux person, I not aware of the specific command for Mint 19, and I'm not going to risk misleading you further by guessing.

My best advice would be to restart the computer: verify that the Manager will open once and connect to the (running, service) client: and while it's open, check the 'Other options...' dialog will open the Manager exit dialog: then, exit the Manager, and ensure that "Stop running tasks when exiting the BOINC Manager" is NOT checked.

That way, the client should run continuously, and be available to accept connections next time you open the Manager.

you have the client installed as a service. you need to re-start it manually after shutting it down. it will start automatically at boot, but not just by opening boincmgr.

run this in the terminal:

sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start

Ah, ok. You got me there. I'm not running Linux... yet. I'm still using that crappy OS from that crappy company in Redmond, Washington. ;) lol

But... Several years ago I had a system that was running Linux, KUbuntu to be exact. I don't remember having the "localhost" connection problem. That PC was just for crunching SETI. I may have just left the BOINC manager open. I used a KVM between it and my Win 7 PC.

I have just moved one of my hosts from windows to linux mint 19, and although there have been various minor hiccups, I must say the transition went quite smoothly, and everything now runs as expected.

I have tried (though not succeeded) to change the display format for datetime in boincmgr, and in that process I have taken it down and up lots of times without issue.

You'll get it working if you don't give up on the first hurdle :-)
