I´m thinking of trying adding a fifth card in my linux host. I've never tried using raisers but I do need 2 long ones, not sure even those 400mm are long enough. I have a Thermaltake X9 cube case and my plan is placing the 2 cards in the bottom of the case, but the distance from the MB slots is long. Also, the cards can´t just lay there. Not sure what to do... |

I'm sure there is a limit in length due to signal degradation and the quality of the cable material used. I managed to plug a riser cable into the last outboard PCIe slot on my X99 board in my Core X9 case and loop it over the side of the motherboard tray to below. I rigged up a brace for the card to stand upright and aim its exhaust out the back. But the quality of the cable was insufficient and/or the motherboard did not like the extra long signal delay to the card and refused to let the system boot. The 400mm length riser adapter will be plenty sufficient to move a card under the motherboard tray. yes, but i wouldnt use those SATA power adapters. plug a PCIe 6-pin from the PSU directly to the riser board. also that is only a x1 interface. not a huge deal for seti if you keep speeds at least gen2, ideally gen3. but it is said to have a large impact to other projects. the adapter shown by W3Perl is a full 16 lane riser.
